You gotta be more careful with your pronunciation mate. There's 100 people on here who'd be happy to help you avoid these irritating mistakes.
BaRRa not Bahra !!
Ford VCT Tickford 4L inline 6
It is BA-RRA and not BAR-RA
Holden fan here. Anyone that can't appreciate a good engine build from ANY manufacturer is obviously sitting on the kerb playing with themselves! Awesome engine.
Agree iv been a holden boy my whole life (I'm 32) but I now own a ba xr6 turbo still have a wm stato and the misses still has a vx super 6
Spoken like true car enthusiasts , I don't have a favourite make of vehicle i love them all especially a well built high HP inline 6 ✌️💪
Holden man here, too, I drive an LS powered car, mainly because I've always loved the sound and lazy power of a V8, but admittedly, if I was after a big HP engine I think a Barra would be hard to beat
Couldn’t agree more and I’m a Ford man but a mate of mine his father races a 202 powered Torana drag racing .
As you said you’d be a gong beater on the kerb if you can’t appreciate a good motor no matter where it’s from mate
My brother got a FG xr6 turbo. But he took the turbo of and swaped it over for a vortex supercharger. And gave it a cam package and bigger injection. And port and port and polish the heads. You would think he has a blown V8 under the hood. The lumpy cam sounds like it with the exhaust he has on it also. But dam it can move. The supercharger was definitely a big step up from the turbo. Almost 1800rwhp he's getting from 24 psi vortex supercharger. But instant power. The only thing I dislike about turbos. They take a bit for the turbo to kick in. Not till mid range you will start to feel any turbo grunt in boost. Sometimes it feels like you missed a gear than suddenly power kicks in. Supercharger it's different. Instant power as soon as you touch the throttle
AdamLZ is a big reason why Barra are gaining traction in the US
The 1320 guys also love the engine. They love the Aussie car scene generally and what we do. There is plenty of their stuff that you can watch and they just have a grin from ear to ear
He fell in love with them when he came over to Aust for drift comp... Glad to see he put one in his rig
@@ThatguyPurps good way to keep the purity also
Annoying because barras are being bought up and parts like exhaust manifolds are selling for silly prices

When Ford Australia were developing the turbo version of the Barra, they nicknamed it "Gull" (as in seagull) as it would shit all over everything else! To make the Barra better, there needs to be a change of the oil pump gears, different valve springs and stronger head bolts if you're going to thrash the guts out of one!
Lmao, i doubt name 'Gull' would go down too well.
I have XR 6. it’s very fast.
Doesn't shit on Toyota or ls so must be shitting on the mangs
Why do seagulls fly upside down over Australia? Cause there's nothing worth shitting on!
@@heathcornbeef That's where you're wrong...our pollies are worth shitting on...especially Scotty from marketing!
Imagine if Ford US had half a brain and adopted the Barra for the Mustang as a stock item. Would be such a hit I think.
It would be insane. They would have sold millions of them. AWD as well.
Adam LZ did this to his Mustang and said the same thing.
@@Concerned_citizen_aus watch the whole video
Ford USA said it was too much power for a family car...
@@dylanzrim3635 yeah I did. What’s your point?
Just purchased my first barra powered car yesterday
My son had a FPV (Ford Performance Vehicles) Typhoon, which is a hot Barra turbo. It had a very expensive exhaust and he added further tunes .
We were stopped by the cops 1Km from the dealer in Melbourne he bought it from as he gave it a little berries and it stepped out even with Traction control activated. As we were going to NSW he let us go with a warning
It later did an 11second quarter even with the ZF 6 speed not allowing to stage as it needed a reflash.
It was almost undrivable in the wet.
He crashed and then got a territory turbo ex ACT police, and did the same mods, and he reckoned it was faster due to better traction.
Shame, them F6 Typhoons are hot property now
Typhoon. That’s a ute yeah? If so it probably had leaf springs.
Leaf spring and traction don’t mix
@@dylanzrim3635 typhoon is the sedan, tornado was the ute
the Turbo Territory's are 4wd, thats why they are quicker off the line and have better traction, look up MotiveVideo on here, they do the GTR shootouts with the worlds fastest street driven GTR's, but they also have other classes, and one car that is there, is a 9sec turbo territory....torque steers like a spastic down the qtr mile LOL
I have the Barra turbo territory with little bit of work 310 kw AWD and it’s a beast.
And just much fun is to blow unsuspecting muscle cars into the weeds with an SUV :D
Check out Benny's custom works on UA-cam, Aussie bloke that's almost perfected a barra set-up in a old cresta, goes like a rocket. Also builds a barra fox body for drag week in the USA

Yesssss! when??!!!? Neeed to
A guy at Summernats had a Barra (block) at over 2100hp.😯
As a Mopar guy you need to check Chrysler Australia Hemi six with the triple Webber
FINALLY! The mighty Barra. Becoming popular in the US as a engine swap. The reason why they have become so popular is the huge tuning ability without changing everything.
Just bought a fg xr6 2011. Tickford for my 16 year old daughter. She loves it.
Lucky kid !!
I'm an Aussie and immensely proud of Barra engines. I have heard they are getting popular in the States and Europe, especially Scandinavian countries.
A Barra won horsepower heroes @ summernats our biggest car show in oz it made over 2200 rwhp from a stock looking car, and has run low 7s.
All I've done to mine is changed the valve springs and threw a bigger turbo on and ended up with 620hp at the wheels. Of course I needed exhaust, fuel system and intercooler upgrades, but the engine is stock besides valve springs
Basic bolt ons really
You got to watch a video of Adam LZ taking that S550 Barra for a spin. Its a rocketship!
Pretty sure most footage we've seen to this point of Adams stang is all low boost stuff too. It's crazy to think that thing has more in it.
A friend of mine has a BA Falcon that he competes in dyno competitions (not since lockdown) the last pull he did made around 1400kw at the wheels 🤯
That's INSANE !
@@edwardfletcher7790 it is, I’m trying to find the video of it on UA-cam but I can’t… He’s not answering his phone atm! Surprisingly it’s close to a second slower doing a qtr mile pass than my HQ coupe which has a LSX twin turbo 427 in it (although my car is specifically built for the track) 👍
The Green taxi engine is the one to get, Even when they have done over a million miles. Every Taxi in Oz was a Ford.
Except for the Holden and Toyota ones
@@bennyw9975 He means the majority.
@@petezappa8748 yep that makes more sense 👍
@@bennyw9975 I do actually think there was only falcon taxis around the BA period. Early 2000s toyotas never made it to taxi status here in perth, neither did commodores. The LPG falcons were just a no brainer, nobody had those LPG numbers or dedicated LPG. WAs like 50c a litre back then too.
@@Saphire0437 in SA it was more of a combo of offerings but Ford still had the majority. There were many VY’s, VZ’s and VE’s but less so of the VF when camrys and Corolla’s began to take market share.
I bought a beater falcon 4 years ago with the intention of driving it until it drove no more, have never had it serviced and it still runs to this day perfectly fine. There was one point where it had no oil in the engine for probably 4 months due to a faulty oil light which didn't alert me to a leak, gave it some oil and I still drive it to this day. Easily one of the most reliable cars in the world id say.
It was a sad day when the parent company wound up Australian production because this engine is now a part of history, when Ford released the Mustang here in an attempt to replace the Falcon they offered it as 4cyl or V8. Who on earth wants a 4cyl Mustang? Ford US should have taken the Barra over there and put it in the Mustang. There was an all gas varient (gas as in LPG) which had a green rocker cover and higher compression and I believe that engine has been getting shipped off shore for use in drag cars.
Lpg motor is just the top level engine with green paint on top and an LPG mixer. Or in the newer ones it’s injectors but point still.
And ford USA purchased the schematics. They can manufacture it if they wish
Yeah i saw a 4 cylinder Mustang and could not believe they did that, even an NA 6 would of been a far better alterative to the V8 then a 4
@@streetguru3054 I think they'd sell a hell of a lot of Barra Turbo Mustangs worldwide. So easy to gain huge HP, would sound awesome too.
Oh yeah, & I'd certainly be looking @ purchasing one, if that was the case.

Love the Barra. Coming from a holden fan
Heaps of people put Barras in stuff, F150s, land cruisers, Nissan patrols, Nissan Skylines, there's an old Rolls Royce in Melbourne with a Barra, and it's a total sleeper, it looks stock as a rock, but it'll give you a hiding.
I love my bf falcon and ute. The sedan is 6spd auto and the ute is 5spd manual both with Barra engines. I have 3 barra engines in the shed, they are getting semi collectable. Thanks for your kind appreciation of Aussie culture, as I am a big fan of the good ole USA.
In the 70s and 80s nearly all Australian cars had straight sixes. Holden had 138, 149, 161, 173, 186 and 202 cui motors.
Ford had 172, 250 cui ( predecessor to the Barra).
Of course valiant ( Chrysler) had the hemi 245 and 265. It was said a hemi 265 could take most V8s off the line.
Keep up the good work Ian
I own a 2010 Ford G6E Turbo. For what little mods I have done to the Barra, it is quite a lot of fun to drive. It makes about 415hp on E85 and sounds great doing it.
I have watched all of your videos over the past few months, I think your enthusiasm for the Barra has earned you a sub. Haha. Keep up the good work.
The ultimate modded Barra can be found by searching UA-cam for
Barra 2200 HP.
Unbelievable HP but still able to be driven sedately and smoothly away from the Dyno competition by owner Maria Passos.
Have a 2008 Falcon wagon with a 2010 XR6 turbo fitted . Runs sweet with plenty of GO and still tows my 20' Trailer Sailer to the coast ( 450ks away ) as required!!
Holden and Ford in Australia pushed eachother for years to have the most superior product. As you've learned about V8 supercars. Even though they had other engines that didn't stop performance at all. I think that barra engine is really a stout motor. Im a GM guy. It's just dissapointing they've both been taken away from us. 👍🇦🇺
I agree on every count. A ton of development went into the Barra engine, clearly, because the original single cam version of this engine in the EA Falcon was hardly anything to write home about. I worked in a Ford dealers at the time, and never would have dreamt they would have ended up as legendary as they did
Amen mate we should at least buy the naming rights to Holden back off general motors.
@@BobarissGish Start a Go Fund Me lol...you got my $$
It's amazing the Ford and Holden rivalry here in the great land of Oz when even the Holden lovers say how great the barra is.
There is only one thing better than a Barra . That’s having 2
Much respect from Albany wa boy's Australia keep up the good work legend
When it was in development they called it Project Gull, as in seagull, because they knew it would shit on everything. V8 drivers have learned to tread lightly around that XR6 Turbo badge, with anything faster retailing at six figures, as opposed to $45k for one of these brand-new. Secondhand they're even better, though it can be tough to find one that hasn't been thrashed, crashed or fiddled with by a tuner. The engine also went into the Territory to create the F6X, which at the time was the world's most powerful SUV (a title since taken by Audi and Mercedes and whatnot, but again, ask how much they cost, I dare you). The carbon fiber thing is also an Australian innovation - it was Broadmeadows who waltzed the carbon pieces through Ford's ludicrous quality control approval process, so you can thank the Aussies for every bit of carbon weave you see under the bonnet of the Mustang. I get the feeling that sales Stateside were on their minds while designing it, but sadly the world changed before it could happen; the same thing happened to Holden, who basically got the job of designing GM's global F-R platform, did a fairly good job to come up with the VE Commodore, then saw the project axed and forced them to recover the costs in the Australian market alone. The Barra was never going to fly in Europe - it's too thirsty and produces too much CO2 - but it might've done okay in 'Murka, as long as the sales people quickly changed the subject when the customers asked where they came from...
Yeah AdamLZ has done a few trips to Oz. He put the Barra in the Mustang after a bad fire.
Australian here. I've got a 2004 BA with the stock barra. Absolute legend of a motor. Treat it right and you get an easy trouble free 500 thousand km (300k miles). Awesome tow pig and good power when you need it. Stock they are pretty quiet but do a muffler delete (stock has the cat and 2 mufflers) and they sound nice. Put a 2.5 inch system in and they sound really angry in a very good way. Really cheap to get around 50% more power out of it (even for non-turbo) before having to look at strengthening the motor.
Love your channel dude.
YES!!!! Proud to be currently building one.
At one point wreckers were selling NA barra long motors for $99 🤣. Then Americans noticed them hah $$$
Gday mate, I'm planning a 1932 coupe rod which was going to be a 6 cylinder turbo diesel and dually rear axel. The plan was changed a few months ago to be a Barra Turbo with 6 spd manual. The best way to get the deep throat is to split the headers into unequal lengths to a separate dual exhaust. These are often mistaken for a V8 under the bonnet. Also, you will receive something from me soon, its on the plane to the US now.
You need to check out RIPSS a BA Barra powered 6 that produces 2200 RWHP. No joke. This was done at a Street Machine competition as a HP dyno test. 🇦🇺🥰🥰
you used to be able to pick up a barra from the wreckers for $100, it would be high mileage ex-taxi, but still capable of big numbers with some bolt-ons.
I can get em 500 bucks

The Barra engine has been known to get up to the 2000hp mark, it’s a engine of the Gods🇦🇺

You should watch Cresta v Drag week.
Some Ozzie lads swapped a Barra into a Toyota Cresta and then took it too drag week in the U.S.
the following year, they sent a barra over and fitted it out in a fox body mustang for drag week.
Ive watched the full build of Adam Lz's Mustang. It's a sick car.
Thing is he needs to get a front sway bar modified and fitted to it as the stock sway bar wasn't able to clear the sump and so he hasn't got a sway bar on at the moment.
You have given Australia so many fantastic motors from 327 Chevy to 351 Cleveland and everything in between glad to give 1 back
Yep we had the fastest Taxis..in the world! One of these engines , in your vehicle of choice over there...you will not wipe the smile from your face, every time you drive it!
Those XR 6 turbos early 2000's can be found cheap here.
The Barra is a beast. So strong and can make huge reliable power and so easily tuneable
Great Upload as always ! It's cool seeing how enthused you are with the Australian Culture
Best thing about a barra turbo is how little it cost to ad HP compared to a V8. Also a huge amount of torque from these engines.
I have 450rwkw's in my g6e and it cost me a little under $20,000 and I daily it with no issues.
That green falcon was turbo, I believe reading a while ago when the video came out the noise had something to do with the turbo, apparently a few Barra turbos were like that but nothing was actually wrong with it.
I have a 2006 fpv tornado ute! Long live the barra 🤘
As someone from Geelong, I will pick up on the fact that your pronunciation was slightly off though close. Geelong is pronounced with a hard G - (G-long).
As a new viewer, I'm loving these videos.
Former G-town Boy myself & cringed when I heard it pronounced Gee-long but certainly ain’t the first time I’ve heard it pronounced that way! Yeah I am loving Ian’s passion for everything Oz right now...
i have a 2014 fg xr6 turbo with 400kw at the wheels daily driven such an awesome engine wish they were exported around the world might have keep ford australia open
My old BF FPV F6 R-Spec made a lazy 300kw/400hp and 700 odd tq to the rear tyres via the ZF 6-Speed and ran mid 11 second 1/4’s all day, smoke the tyres at 120k/hr with only a tune and injectors.
The “over boost” is basically a factory “Scramble”/“Oh Shit” button in some turbo street cars
The white one on the dyno you said you like is exactly the same as my old one
If I wasn't a Ford bloke (& no I don't hate Holdens ;)), check out the Chrysler Charger Hemi 6. Love the v8 Chargers, bewdiful note, the 6 though... wow!! With the triples, wowee!
V8s will always be loved cos they sound tuff, but a perfectly tuned 6 is different & very very cool!
LOL We have them everywhere in Australia. You can buy them from wrecking yards for $500 AUD for the NA engine. I've owned a couple of XR6's. Awesome cars.
Great to see an American discovering the mighty Barra. I have 2003 BA turbo to prove how easy to get power for next to nothing including buying the car i am under NZ $5000 thats about US $2500 all ive done is injectors and got a tune 307 KW to the wheels and has run a 12.8 qtr mile
green one doing the burnout had bent turbo fins, so sounded awesome and wasnt making all the boost it could
mate older now but still enjoying driving we have a hot Hatch such fun to drive
I remember reading an article thatsaid their first attempt at turboing outperformed the V8 and had to be intentionaly tuned down to keep the V8 as the most powerful option
The engine you were looking at for sale $4,000 at 20:30, is not an FPV. A stock na petrol motor has an unpainted rocker cover, stock na LPG motor has a green rocker cover, stock turbo petrol motor has a red rocker cover and a stock turbo petrol FPV motor has a blue rocker cover with an FPV badge at the front of the ignition coil cover on top, the others have the Ford logo molded with the coil cover.
I've just got my 2013 Ford Ranger Barra swapped and can't wait to pick it up and take it for a drive 👍🍻
A bar is found in a pub. A Barra is found in the water. Listen to an Ozzie pronounce Barramundi, and then shorten it.
Iv had my Barra turbo ute for 14 years now I'll never sell it it's part of my car collection
I worked in the Geelong Plant that built those engines, owned a 2005 BA II XR6 Turbo with the 6 speed manual. I wished I never sold it, if any Yank manages to get a hold of one , mkae sure it's with a manual transmisson. The Falcon XR6 also and wasn't mentioned also handles very very very well for a large car, many a fun drive I had on the Great Ocean Road in the middle of the night ..... those who live in Victoria or have been on the road knows exactly what I mean by a driving experience with a high powered well handling vehicle. .........I wish that plant was still here, but a sad reality it is physically there but empty of workers and machines.
Ford falcon with a Barra is more aussie then v8 holdens, because they all have America motors in the last models the Ford falcon only has and American gearbox and diff where the v8s in both Ford and holden are just running American motor gearbox and diff..

Hey Ian. I came across your channel a couple of nights ago and am totally hooked. I'm so stoked your enjoying learning about our car culture down here.
I grew up watching Bathurst every year with my father from the couch in New Zealand, always rooting for Ford. By the time I started work I had completed 3 years of high school in Australia. I landed an mechanical apprenticeship in the biggest Ford dealership in QLD.
I was a second year apprentice when the BA came out and the XR6 Turbo was an absolute game changer. At the time Holden had been smashing Ford with their LS powered Commodores for a number of years. The Falcon could now compete!
Ford released an XR8 at the same time powered by an Aussie assembled 5.4L truck V8 with 4.6L mustang heads. While that seemed like a good idea at the time, the engine was never competitive. The long stroke of the 5.4L block just didn't suit the flow characteristics DOHC heads from the high revving 4.6L. They had nothing down low, would come on song at about 5000rpm then it was over by 5500rpm.
The XR6 T by contrast had torque almost everywhere and would rev and pull cleanly all the way to the redline. The later Barra turbos with the ZF 6 speed autos drop 3 cylinders between upshifts and sound insane! Kind of like a VW equipped with a DSG box but in big capacity I6 turbo form. Absolutely heavenly.
I hope you can get down here after this covid mess is sorted out to sample some of our Aussie delights in person.
Maybe for the Bathurst 1000 or #Summernats.
PS. Search for the Barra powered XD Falcon drift car from Townsville for something different!
i can remember when the BA Falcon was being introduced. I was working on buying the parts for the pcb in the instrument cluster. Our engineer went to Ford at the Youyangs to do some tweaking to the software and got to both drive a barra turbo and be a passenger. His normal ride was a BMW1200 bike. He came back and said it was the first time he had been shocked at the speed of a vehicle. Ford realised they had to 'wind back' the turbo Barra as it was both faster and quicker than the V8 version (non turbo). and ford being ford couldn't have an i6 being faster than their V8.
From an English teacher to all Americans. Ian & y'all, vowels (a, e, i, o, u) are magic ~ they have a long sound and a short sound. In most instances, short sounding vowels "a-apple, e-elephant, i-ink, o-on/off, u-up" change to a very different sound when they are followed by a controlling "r". Eg: arm, farm... her, per .... girl, shirt .... form, dormitory ... urgent, suburb.... But when a vowel is followed by double "rr" the vowel sound stays short. as in arrangement, error, irrelevant, orrery, currency. So when we have "Barramundi" (the name of a tasty fish), because it has "arr" the "a' remains short.
Barra the world 💪
good luck getting your hands on one. they have already become scarce and expensive over here in Oz. worth the hunt though. I did hear of a few blokes buying up a heap of turbo barras from all the wreckers and sending them to the USA.

We pronounce Geelong like G-Long bro 😎 I love my Barra engines. Having owned many turbo & non turbos falcon sedans & utes through the years. Cheap & easy mods on the Barra turbo engine can easily push over 300 rear wheel KW.
Non turbo Barra engines that were factory LPG fuel engine usually old taxi these days. They are easily a modded to turbo petrol engines due to LPG engines high compression capacity.
I have had my FG XR6 since new in 2010 and of all the cars I’ve had and there have been many, l will be keeping mine as long as l can as you cannot get a large rear wheel drive vehicle without spending shed loads and that Barra engine is just fantastic even after all these years of ownership l still love driving it more so than any one of our other vehicles which includes a later BMW M but bang for your buck it’s unsurpassed! But what saddens me is that Ford Australia gets it right then pulls the pin on us! As an aside would you believe that our wonderful Barra six pot is an evolution of the first 144 ci six in the original Ford Falcon from 1960, the same donk as the one you had in you early Falcons and Econolines!

Check out the E49 6 pack hemi RT charger. 302bhp in 1972 of the factory floor. Some guys are making 420rwhp plus NA out of the old hemi 6
Owned an Xr6 Turbo for a decade.
The car left a lot to be desired in other ways (i wouldn't buy a Ford again) but the engine was just unbelievable.
If it wasn't for how great the engine was in terms of power and reliability I would have flicked in a year or two but I simply couldn't as I loved it too much!!!
Hey man, love the vids. Would you be open to reacting to anymore 4x4 24/7’s vids?.. there’s so many good ones out there that we’d love to see your reaction to. It’s also a great way to see the different landscapes in this scenic part of the world. Cheers
Yes 👍 😉
There is a guy in Australia that put a Barra turbo into his 66/67 Lincoln Continental convertible. He’s taken it to Summer Nats a couple of times.
