saw it in Charlottetown last summer; went up with parents- got Anne package at Kindred Spirits (in my 30's- introduced THEM to Anne) like this song; prefer Marilla's ballad
+Espanholina A Sonhadora someone correct me if i'm wrong, but I assume Gilbert is using a metaphor to compare Roy to a hothouse flower, which can only survive under certain circumstances. I think he is saying Anne should take him to the dance instead because their love would last under any circumstance, unlike Anne and Roy's relationship.
Anne was going to the dance with Roy and he sent her a flower that she didn't really like (I can't remember the kind of flower it was but it was expensive) Roy obviously didn't know that she didn't like that kind of a flower or didn't care. Gilbert (who worked at the florist shop and delivered the flowers) knew that she didn't like it so this song is him telling her that she won't be happy wearing that flower (or going with Roy) to the dance. Gilbert made her a corsage of her favorite flower and told her she should wear that one. He was elated and encouraged when he noticed that Anne chose to wear his corsage to the dance instead of Roy's. I love this song and this musical so much! I took a long road trip to PEI from Utah to see it a few months ago! I would go back in a heartbeat!
this musical is sadly so underrated.
The most amazing girl I know said this was her favorite song, it's great.
I went to see this play its amazing i came back saw it twice...
You once told me you could never really warm up to a flower
You couldn’t live with
You once told me I remember we discussed it for an hour
What you could live with
I paid very close attention so I’ll mention if I may I heard you say that you would not ever wear a hothouse flower
And I quote
Hothouse flowers are like flowers that are flowered in a garden
Or in a forest
Hothouse flowers are for me if I misquote I beg your pardon
I’m just a florist
I’d feel silly where I couldn’t wear a lily to a dance
You won’t be happy
With a flower you can’t live with
That’s no way to go to the dance
Don’t go with the wrong flower
You wont be happy
You wont be happy
But wear the right flower to the dance
And you’ll be happy at the dance
Hothouse flowers are like flowers that have flowered out like heather
Heather is hearty
Hothouse flowers don’t get out there unaffected by the weather
Good for a party
I know flowers and you’re running out of hours to the dance
You wont be happy with a flower you cant live with
That’s no way to go to the dance
Don’t go with the wrong flower
You wont be happy
You wont be happy
But wear the right flower to the dance and you’ll be happy at the dance
Gilbert Blythe
Gilbert Blythe
You look so beautiful
Gilbert Blythe
Gilbert Blythe
You’re just so wonderful to see
Gilbert Blythe
Gilbert Blythe
Mr. Flower man
You can always get lilies by me
You won’t be happy with a flower you cant live with
That’s no way to go to the dance
Don’t go with the wrong flower
You wont be happy
You wont be happy
But wear the right flower to the dance
And you’ll be happy at the dance
yes its from Canada, P.E.I to be exact :)

This song is sung so fast and the lyrics are so ridiculous, poor Gil for having to put up with Anne's tendencies :D
I'm trying to play guitar while singing this and it's gonna kill me
Which character sings this?
Gilbert Blythe.
What is this song about? I really want to know

Heather Micola Thank you so much!
