  • Roles have been reversed from what we've come accustomed to in the Commons.
Rishi Sunak took up his place as leader of the opposition for the first time today as Sir Lindsay Hoyle was elected Speaker of the House in the first acts of the new parliament, while Keir Starmer gave his first speech from the despatch box as Prime Minister.

Anyway they've maintained their seats which is largely all they care about. I'm sure they'd prefer to be in power, as that's more fun, but the wage is still pretty good, and they still get to lord over a couple thousand people. So it's not too bad. Meanwhile Rishi is just happy wasn't the first PM to lose his seat.

That's really interesting - as a British person, I was chatting with my partner today about how we hate the fact our politicians are close friends with those from other parties - as well as with journalists. It's all very cosy, with politicians able to laugh and joke with actual fascists both in the parliament and on TV, and the media not holding any of them to account properly in order to maintain privileged access. They even largely go to the same social functions together. Meanwhile, the country continues to slide into economic malaise with ballooning inequality and collapsing public services.

As for the Labour Party win, whilst 80% of the population did not vote for them and more people voted for Corbyn last time, the system is such that they have won. So it's not quite the same thing as rigging the election. They did score a lot of cheap seats as the low percentage of vote share would suggest but this is all allowed. Although there's been some drift apart in the recent polarisation of politics, much of the time MPs do form friendships and connections to MPs from opposing sides. It's not uncommon to find a group of MPs laughing together in the bar after work only to realise they're from 3 or 4 different parties.
As the speeches given in the video illustrate, It's still a job, and they are still just people. They have to learn to live and work side by side with people with often diametrically opposed political viewpoints. There are the psychos and the ideologues who get into the commons and frankly, nobody likes them very much (even MPs don't like those who won't STFU about politics). There's also the slimy ambitious ones who will trample on anyone to get power. MPs often learn to keep a wide berth from them too lest they get stepped on.
It is important to remember that a lot of MPs really are there (at least initially) because they believe in helping their communities. Because we've had so many parasites in government lately it gets easy to forget that.

He’s a Tory xxxt. So he could well stay as an MP using all the expenses he can get away with.
Theresa May stayed as did Liz Truss. Ok Truss was PM for a very short time but still she remained an MP when she could’ve just done a Nadine Dorries and left.
Another ex PM who stayed on as a bank bencher was Gordon Brown.
After the 2010 election Brown remain PM by order of our so called constitution until a new government was sworn in, at which point he resigned as leader of Labour and returned to the back benches until the 2015 election when he stood down.
There’s 3 recent ones who’ve stayed on. I’m sure if I look hard enough there’ll be others.
Who knows what Sunak will do but my guess is he’ll stay for a term then leave, filling his pockets with all the freebies and expenses scams he can and all while pretending to ‘serve’ his constituents (who live in a rural area who’s economy is based around tourism and farming. Thick of them to still back the Brexiter MP who lied about the benefits of Brexit to a large part of his constituency.
Far be it from me for calling people thick but when you’re experiencing dificlties exporting your produce to the EU when you were told everything would be ok, to re elect the man who said that is fundementakky and by definition, stupid. Mturkeys voting for Christmas and as usual heyre being slaughtered STILL supporting christmas
Sunak cares about himself and won’t want to lose all the perks yet. He’ll rough it for now is my opinion anyway. .
