Dear Matthew, Thank you so much for your invaluable videos! I am an international student, which means that I have an education system that differs greatly from the one in the UK; your videos were my window into how to write my personal statement - something I have never done before. I am applying for an MPhil course and am trying to follow your advice on being myself, but sometimes my statement appears to be too personal - at least to me, - and I fear that I might not show the fact that I am, in fact, prepared to study my intended subject, that I have got enough training in my Bachelor to advance further. Unfortunately, I don't have anyone who could have a look at my personal statement and give constructive criticism, so I wanted to ask: what could you advise to do in a situation like this?
I'll be producing a video on statement of purpose for Masters degrees shortly. It's true that for these statements, we're not just interested in you as a person, but your views on critical debates relevant to the field you intend to study. In other words, we want a bit more academic depth. So tell us the sorts of questions you find interesting, who you have read, what you thought, what you hope to gain from graduate training etc. The instructions on the statement of purpose on the website are useful, and if you follow these to the letter you should be fine.
Thank you for your detailed reply! Firstly, I'm really looking forward to watching your video on Statement of Purpose for Master's degrees! Meanwhile, I am using the instructions that are available on the website, but when it comes to practice, many doubts appear. I'll try to elaborate (maybe it'd even be useful for the content of your upcoming video). Usually, it's things like: 1) Sometimes, I wonder whether the writing style that I'm using is appropriate for a master's course. 2) Or, whether I'm stating my suitability and interest as clearly as possible. It's actually so easy to overlook something because when writing, one knows oneself, the whole story and what is meant by this or that sentence, but I have no context to fall back on and try to see how the Admission Committee will perceive it. 3) Is there really only one way that is appropriate for the Statement? I've seen so many guidelines saying that it should be perfectly academic, very dry, with minimal use of stylistic devices or storytelling, otherwise Oxford wouldn't want to consider your application. Or they would, but you're more likely to get rejected.
When deciding on a college to apply to, would selecting the one my mum and grandad went to increase my chances? Or would it have no effect whatsoever. I know they don't do the whole American legacy thing, but I would like to know if it would give a minor boost to the odds (if any).
Hi Matt! I am 12 years old ( I know, I am young) but I very much yearn going to Oxford to study English Literature. Any thing I could do throughout my time I have to get prepared for what I should be expecting when I take the test/ apply?
Hi Lila, Thank you for your message. I hope you're well. Best thing to do now is grow your love of literature. Read widely and deeply. Don;t just read what you're told to read for school, but read around that. Also, you can listen to podcasts or watch UA-cam lectures on literature as well. Key thing is to have as much fun as possible! If you're having fun, you'll do better.

I have masters in history from Indian University, I don't know how to apply and what will we have to do for PhD. I am so much interested in Contemporary world history specially focus on European history. Please help me Sir in aspiring my dream of studying in the best university of the world, Oxford University. I am very thankful to you sir.
Hi there, thank you for your comment. Please see here for general information: www.history.ox.ac.uk/dphil-study Come back to me if/when you have follow up questions.
Dear Mr. Williams, first of all, thank you so much for your amazing videos on UA-cam. They helped me a lot in this exhausting time of the application process! I am applying to Oxford this year which is why I'm quite in a hurry right now, but I got a question about the prediction of grades. Since I'm an international student from Germany, I have to translate my grades into English A-levels. I have the problem that I can't decide whether I should predict predict an overall "Abitur" grade of 1.3 (AAA equivalent - sufficient for PPE) or a grade of 1.2 (A*AA equivalent). Right now, a grade of 1.2 is more probable, but there is still a year of school left - including my final exams. I am very sure that I'm going to achieve a 1.3, but predicting the lower grade could prevent me from getting an offer. If I predict 1.2 on the other hand, with a bit of bad luck in my finals I could miss it slightly. What should I do? Can you give me any advice?
You should make an accurate prediction of what you are likely to obtain. For PPE you need AAA and will not be asked to obtain anything higher than that. If, however, you think it is likely will obtain higher than that, then you should make that realistic prediction. Best of luck! M
Thanks for the tips . I am interested in your videos as they motivate me to study in Oxford. I have a question, does the scholarship cover all or some of the university costs?
Just did my TSA today, honestly can't tell how well I did if I'm honest, I did a ton of prep but obviously nerves got to me and I did mess up oj the end a little bit. I am aware that there isn't a "cut of point" so to say in terms of the score and rejection because it is reviewed holistically , but how is it possible to know what they mean by this, is it possible to have a lower score than what you'd expect of a person relative to the rest of the application ( as in they didn't perform too well on the tsa but the rest of their application is pretty much outstanding) will their tsa cut them off ?? I don't know if that makes any sense- these videos were great reassurance by the way 👍
Good luck with it! The key point to remember is that we contextualise your score. So, for example, if a candidate is from a relatively disadvantaged background, or has faced extenuating circumstances, then we will likely shortlist them for interviews even if they have a low score on TSA.
Most likely not. Simply because the opportunity to host an MUN conference is not equally available to all applicants. It's also not a clear predictor of academic potential. So we tend to focus on data that we can more easily used to compare across applicants. None of which is to say that you shouldn't take part! You'll no doubt take an awful lot from the conference that will be of use to job applications and other things.
grades are nearly perfect in the final year, I have won/competed in regional and national Olympiads. However I don’t exactly have the most brilliant or even good extracurriculars, particularly due to my mental health at the start high school /end of ms or simply just didn’t have much of an access to them. does a sat score of 1580+ give me a good chance or nah? applying for stem btw. Not from US or UK.
You don’t need extracurriculars, but super curriculars (reading, listening etc to academic content beyond your curriculum). The SAT can’t be accepted on its own. Please see here re accepted qualifications - www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/applying-to-oxford/for-international-students/international-qualifications That SAT score would be competitive in conjunction with something like APs.
Do you think I should apply next year ( currently in year 12)? For GCSEs I got 4,5,5,6-5,6,6,7,7 and my uni admissions teacher told me I shouldn’t bother even if I do get good enough predicted grades next year. I really want to do ppe at Oxford but I’ve always been a middle set student. I currently do Economics, Geography and Computer science
Mate forget the GCSEs and apply, I don’t know too much abt this but Oxford decided not to look at GCSEs this year after people applied because almost every applicant was identical as the GCSES were too inflated. Your year has even more inflated GCSEs so chances are they won’t look at it this year. Work hard on ur interests and ur predicted grades bro
For those who were called for the PPE interview, when do the applicants get to know if they have been offered or not. Does this process run through April too.
For the PPE Foundation Year, results should be sent out in mid April. For PPE without a Foundation Year, results were sent out in January. All best, Matt

I've enjoying your videos!!! Can I still make it as a 24yrs old undergrad? Plus I'm also an international student. Can mature students still apply for scholarships?
There is no age limit on applying to Oxford! As far as I'm aware mature students are just as eligible for scholarships as anyone else. To find out what international scholarships are available, see here: www.ox.ac.uk/students/fees-funding/search/undergraduate
@@JesusCollegeOxford1571 thank you so much for answering! Lemme ask one more question, do I only need to take the a level subs that are required for the course? Hi Matt! I am a student rejected by Oxford this year, and is considering about reapplying. I just wanted to ask if reapplying while studying in another university possible? I am quite confused as the official website says no, but there are some people online that claims that they successfully transferred school from let’s say LSE, to Oxford 😢😢
Hi there. I have seen this happen for my degree (PPE) -- where students successfully apply to Oxford whilst studying at another uni. I'd guess that the success rate is fairly low, however, because the admissions tutors tend to think that the applicant already has a good uni place. Although, of course, sometimes people can be unhappy at their uni and can reasonably want to change.
@@JesusCollegeOxford1571 got it! Thank you so much for explaining! Should I write to the colleges and ask about their attitudes about re-applicants just in case?
Hi Matt 👋. I would like to ask that, is it compulsory to use grade 11 end of year results when applying to Oxford University? If yes, Are there any chances of me getting accepted if my grade 11 results are bad but my grade 12 results ( June) are on point?
Hi, we usually ask for qualifications that have been obtained, or predictions as to what qualifications will be obtained. So, we don't usually ask for grade scores throughout your school career, just for the final performance. As such, it's not unusual for candidates to have improved their performance and be admitted on the basis of strong qualifications, even if they were not as highly graded earlier in their school careers.
Thank you Sir for your reply,it is very specific and helpful. When am applying on the coming Months I'll surely use your Wonderful videos 😊 to Guide me.
Hello mat! My high school GCSEs were really bad which i regret not trying for them however i am doing really well at college currently and i am trying my hardest to be able to do A levels and get my GCSE grades up but do you think there is still a chance for me to try or there isnt point because of my “bad” GCSEs since oxford requires a lot of high grades?
Hi, Thanks for your comment. There are no particular grade requirements for GCSEs. And, A-levels are definitely more important. Your GCSEs will be considered, but they will be contextualised, meaning that they will be considered relative to your school and any relevant circumstances that you let us know about. So, in short, there’s a chance if you have good A levels and perform well on any admissions tests. Good luck!
Possibly. Such conferences may well improve your debating skills, which are transferable to the law. If you were to mention MUN in a personal statement, perhaps talk about how it encouraged you to look further into international law. You could then read about some cases or resolutions that you have found particularly interesting. Attending MUN in itself is not going to give an advantage, unless you explain how it has helped you better understand the law.
Greetings, It’s a great video ! Thanks for your guidance sir . I’m from India and I do like to know, if the 2 backlogs that I had ( due to health issues ) impact my application even though my overall score is in par with what my course needs ( MSc in Sustainability Enterprise and Environment ) - first class. I would be grateful if you can help me out sir !
Thank you for your message. It's worth contacting the admissions office for the course you're applying to (graduate.enquiries@geog.ox.ac.uk). They will be able to provide more specific guidance. It is possible to alert the admissions tutors of extenuating circumstances, such as poor health, that have affected your application. All best wishes

It depends on how well you perform on the admissions test (HAT). If your qualifications are eligible then you stand as much chance as someone with A-levels.
It depends on the DPhil and the strengths of other applicants. For a general overview, please see here: www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/graduate/international-applicants/international-qualifications
Thank you for your comment! There is a lot of information here (www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/applying-to-oxford/for-international-students), but did you have any specific questions?
@@JesusCollegeOxford1571 Not at the moment, I had a couple of doubts about the personal statement, but I've hopefully got that sorted, thank you for your reply.

@@JesusCollegeOxford1571 I have one more question sir, Like I got an essential repeat because of my travel dates to do an internship abroad clashed with my semester examination. So there's a drop in my current cgpa,is there any problem to apply then? I have contacted my supervisor and he has agreed to accept me if I get selected. So what should I do now??
I would suggest you apply and ask your referees to explain this examination situation. If you referees can confirm that your GPA is not an entirely accurate measure of your academic potential, then you could make a competitive application.
Although I am 14 y/o I am already thinking of applying to Oxford to study English Literature. How much time before the school-ending exam should I start preparing for the application?
You can start prepping now, but gently! Start by reading works of literature that take your interest. The serious prep can start about 6 months before applying (application deadline is October, usually in the last year of school).

Usually, it's things like:
1) Sometimes, I wonder whether the writing style that I'm using is appropriate for a master's course.
Thank you so much.
When deciding on a college to apply to, would selecting the one my mum and grandad went to increase my chances? Or would it have no effect whatsoever. I know they don't do the whole American legacy thing, but I would like to know if it would give a minor boost to the odds (if any).
It won't have any effect at all. Legacy is not used in UK uni admissions.
@@JesusCollegeOxford1571 Damn. It's annoying when the inherently unfair system would have actually been of benefit to you xD
Hey girl I have the same worry I’m going into y10 and I really want to go into Oxford and i don’t know what to do to be prepared

Hello Matt sir ....you are great professor I had ever met. I am from India. I always watch your videos. Sir I want help from your side, I want to apply for PhD History.
Dear Mr. Williams,
first of all, thank you so much for your amazing videos on UA-cam.
hiii, did you get in oxford?
Yes did you make it
Thanks for the tips . I am interested in your videos as they motivate me to study in Oxford. I have a question, does the scholarship cover all or some of the university costs?
Hi, it depends on the scholarship. Please see here: www.ox.ac.uk/students/fees-funding/search
Would organizing a MUN conference and putting that in my personal statement give me a small advantage?

Does the UK have scholarships dedicated towards American citizens? Or better yet, are you familiar with American scholarships that are international and work in the UK? Thanks for the video and your response.

Yes, you can do that.
Good luck!
@@JesusCollegeOxford1571 Thank you!! Does oxford only accept A levels or do they accept T levels too?
How can we add to our academic CV?
Read books, articles etc. Think deeply about subjects you find interesting.
If I want to apply for law, would participating in MUN conferences help?
What about job opportunity as a tutor after graduating from Oxford?
Good! Plenty of our graduates go in to teaching/academia

Thank you for your message. It's worth contacting the admissions office for the course you're applying to (graduate.enquiries@geog.ox.ac.uk). They will be able to provide more specific guidance. You can start prepping now, but gently! Start by reading works of literature that take your interest. The serious prep can start about 6 months before applying (application deadline is October, usually in the last year of school).
