  • During the GW150 Celebrations in 1985 it was decided to have the newly restored GWR 2800 No 2857 haul a selection of the Severn Valley's goods wagons to take part in a Railfreight Spectacular in Newport, South Wales on Tue 10th Sept 1985.
The train left the Severn Valley Railway at Kidderminster on the evening of the 9th September heading towards Worcester Foregate Street and then on-wards to an overnight stop over in Hereford before continuing to Newport at dawn. The engine was then placed on display in the down platform alongside a set of modern wagons and the 2800 was joined by 7029 Clun Castle.
7029 Clun Castle took people on a journey to Gloucester and back while 2857 remained on display in Newport and after a slight hiccup with the watering went off to collect it's vintage goods train. After 7029 had returned 2857 hauled it's vintage goods train through Newport station alongside a modern class 56 which hauled a modern freight train. After a period on display 2857 then set off back to the Severn Valley Railway running via Severn Tunnel Junction, Caldicot, Chepstow & Gloucester completing a truly memorable event & one that has sadly never been repeated.
YA CANT GET AWAY WITH THIS NOW

What a sight that must have been and one I really wish I could have seen, but I wasn't born at the time this happened. Closest we'll get to see something like this now is with Train Simulator & in real life the closest we'll get to a mainline goods is at the Great Central Railway as that's double track.

What a day that was ! My friend and I went to Newport to see the Railfreight exhibition, with 37s buzzing up and down with 'pretend' freights and lots of BR top dogs looking important. Clun looked magnificent (she looks better now), but 2857 and her train utterly stole the show. We followed her back in the evening against a fabulous setting sun, an amazing never to be repeated sight. The Toad brake van had about 20 blokes jammed on the verandah at Severn Tunnel, where she stopped for water. We caught her again in the Forest near Lydney, plodding steadily along as though she came this way every evening. It was the perfect day and a great advertisement for the SVR, for the guys at Bewdley who restored 2857 and look after her and for the genius of a man who designed her, George Jackson Churchward. 36 years on, 2857 is still going very strong. What a great lady.

Oh lucky you. I wasn't born until 9 years later in 1994. It would have been brilliant to have seen this event happen but at the time this happened 1985 my father was only 17 (18 in Dec). It would be incredible if they ever allowed this to happen for GWR200 in 2035 but I seriously doubt the successor to Network Rail or if gone by then New British Railways would ever allow it because of the rules with wooden stock now. £1000 per wagon back then id say now would be over £10,000 per wagon now so for 25 wagons now it would be around £250,000 or even more.

@@MasterMoyle Plus it would have to be fully fitted now, not permitted to run loose coupled unbraked vehicles any more.

You lucky little begger, getting to witness an event like this. I really wish I could have seen it too but I wasn't born by then as like Mr Moyle I wasn't born until 1994.

Wow! A mainline steam goods train! This must have been a spectacular thing to watch

Indeed it would have been for people at the time, sadly this was 9 years before I was born as the event took place in 1985 and I was born in 1994. Sadly such a sight will never be able to be repeated now as just to run on the mainline now steam locos need a large amount of electrical equipment fitting and then there's the issue with wooden bodied stock.

I agree. At least the Great Central sometimes do fast demonstration freights

Heritage lines are better than nothing but it's still a shame that one on the mainline wont be possible again. Even seeing a 9F on the mainline will never happen again unless NR change the rules on locos with flangeless wheelsets.

Indeed. A massive shame we can’t see a 9f rushing along the mainline. I imagine because of their efficiency, speed and haulage capacity they’d be as common as the black fives on the mainline.

On heritage lines it's done during gala's but I very much doubt it will happen on the mainline unless with modern wagons.

As of today 2857 is no longer mainline certified

This outing was just a one off, it was never intended to go on the mainline at all but as part of the GWR 150 celebrations in 1985 they decided to have an original steam era goods train on the mainline. Back then it was just a job of speaking with BR and a loco could go out, no fuss or issues at all. Really only AWS was needed, but back then it was only optional so it could be fitted if the owners wanted it on or they could leave it without and still be allowed onto BR tracks.
Now though with the ban on wooden bodied stock and stock with wooden chassis aswell as a requirement where the loco needs AWS, TPWS, OTMR & GSM-R fitted & also because Newport and the south wales mainline is now covered by overhead wires it wont ever happen again. This basically was a concorde moment as seeing something like this will most likely never happen again. When they recently moved that LMS coach to Carnforth with 45407 nobody was allowed to be inside it & old style goods trains need brake vans however they are wooden bodied too so unlikely people would be allowed inside either.

As of 2023, 2857's now no longer in service as her ticket expired in February of this year. And I doubt we're gonna be seeing her run again anytime soon either as the SVR plan to stop future overhaul projects for the foreseeable future due to financial problems.

Just for that event the Severn Valley Rly had to get BR to inspect the wagons thoroughly to make sure there were no faults with the wagons and that there would be no fear of hotboxes. BR would only allow 25 wagons to be used and with the toad brakevan that had to be placed behind the engine owing to BR rules, the only acception to this was during the run through Newport station. The inspection fee was also set at around £1000 per vehicle which apart from the one off occasion was far too much to pay as the total would have been £25,000 for each outing. This high fee was also what caused the SVR's GW set from having to stop running on the mainline alongside the restrictions on wooden bodied stock.
With 2857 meanwhile because of it being a goods engine with small driving wheels it wasnt considered as suitable to haul charter trains on the mainline, unlike the LMS 8F no 48151 which has got specialy balanced wheelsets/motion so can run at 50mph the 2800 doesnt have that so would be maxed at 40mph (same as 8F's which dont have specialy balanced wheelsets/motion).
