This was used as one of the many excuses for Canadian Soldiers to kill surrendering Germans. The Canadians at that time took a lot of the war personally after the gas Attack at Ypres in 1915. Then shortly after that grisly baptism by fire. This story of the crucified soldier came about. The crucifixion of the Canadian soldier is what some would believe as to why Canadian soldiers in WW1 were so brutal and would rarely show mercy to captured Germans.
@@rhysnichols8608 True. The use of individual atrocities to dehumanize an entire army of men following orders has always been one of most dangerous tricks of war.
The Great War briefly talked about this way back when Indy Niedel was host. I believe his hypothesis for the myth was that a soldier was killed from an artillery blast, and the shrapnel pinned his corpse against a tree or barn door.
That nonsense comes from the movie Passchendaele. It was far more likely someone made it up and it just grew. There's never been any proof that such a thing happened whether on purpose or not.
But yet it was the first true modern war during these times that went to continue and evolve through other wars decades later..... and now the russians are trying to use a ww1 tactic on their enemy since their blitz attack didn't go to well in their current war in ukraine
The bias in which history is viewed is quite astounding. Even now people who know very little of history recognise the ‘babies on bayonets’ pictures and the Germans being uniquely evil is a commonly held belief, however at the same time the ‘rape of Belgium’ was going on, the Russian army was doing the exact same thing in east Prussia and Poland, and the Austrians and Serbians were killing innocents at the same time too. If history was viewed fairly, next to the ‘babies on bayonets’ there’s be ‘Cossack rapists’ and ‘Serbian lynchers’ in the public consciousness……but alas only 1 player is demonised, for political motives usually
I remember reading about this in Steven Ambrose's "Citizen Soldier" during the Battle of the Bulge in the Second World War. American soldiers found a crucified comrade and crucified a German in retaliation. I believe the account said something along the lines of "they got the message and we stopped finding crucified Americans."
yes, I have no doubt that your side did this to Germans. I find it hard to believe that we did such stuff and I'm positive that it is just US and Brit propaganda to paint Germany in a negative light. It is well known that you are barbarians and love to torture and kill. Ask the native Americans and the Black slaves.
The entente did all they could to demonize the Germans so as to get the US involved. It wasn't hard since they were the source of news flowing out of Europe at the time.
Britain uses "unnamed soldiers" to substantiate a supposed war crime committed by it's enemies, then proceeds to do exactly that to their own soldiers as a field punishment. It doesn't get any more classic British than that.
This is an amazing story. In my village near Ypres called Sint Julien there was also a story of a Canadian Soldier being crucified by Germans. He was crucified on the cross in front of the Church.
That insurance ad feels like a strange piece of South Park like satire, and I’ll say probably won’t be the most effective way to make a claim due to a combat related injury. Reminds me of seeing a billboard, in Georgia, that said “Buy Guns, Drugs, and Liquor”, it was basically a Walmart.
I do not know if this happened or not. But i know that EVERY faction in WW 1 and WW 2 (and mostly every other war) did criminal things. Don't judge one nation judge humanity for beeing so cruel.
Yet another awesome video! Can you make a video on the Kokoda Track Campaign one time? That's a WWII battle that'd be very well explained on your channel!
WW2 was of no doubt more destructive than WW1. But there were a lot more unspeakable cruelties in the battlefield that took place during WW1. WW1 was somewhat creepier.
I have a hard time believing the truth of the crucifixion. Most Germans in the 1910’s wouldn’t have even thought to do that as many grew up as devout Catholics/Christians. Removing Christ from the cross and replacing it with a victim of torture would have been overwhelmingly frowned upon by the ordinary German soldier of Christian faith.
I have a family story to share from my great-uncle. Brother of my great-grandmother. He fought in WWII in France. Story goes he and his unit found a bunch of Jews who had been crucified. He and one other took them all down and buried the dead. No one else could stomach it. Apparently some survived. I’ve never been able to confirm this.
Crucified by the French? The Germans wouldn't have done that since they had no anti-semitic leanings until well after Hitler took control, and even then he specifically gave WW1 Jewish veterans exemption from the anti-Jewish legislation until WW2 started.
Actually this was one of "fear" tactics employed by the imperial Japanese during the 2nd Sino Japanese war and later WW2 on the Pacific front. the film 800 has depicted this inhumane scene.
Japan wasn't Germany. Imperial Germany was a christian nation and to crucify someone was not something christians liked to do(for obvious reasons). This story is likely fake

Keep in mind what Germany was before 1914 - a rising star in every aspect of modern life, with a flourshing economy, culture and society. Population growth was insane because life was good. The imperialistic warmongering colonizing genociding British and their little French servs, still buthurt from the loss from 1870 and crying out in pain over the founding of the German nation, had to do something about it, and they did - by killing millions of their own young men. That's what I call the essence of hate and jelousy.
And after they mobilized all their colonial slaves and levies and canon fodder from all over the world, after they shot about 10 billion shells and bullets, after there was no family without loss in Europe anymore, they finally managed to get Germany to her knees. It's a sad and cruel story in every aspect.
Those in power never learn, or will.
Its not that we repeat history, it’s that humans have a psychological need for justice and do what they think is right. Amazingly these nice and gullible people are really easy to manipulate to fight in a war that you want them too by making up a heartfelt story.
People : The Germans crucified people and stabbed them.
Same people : longbow men from the battle of agincourt protected the British soldiers.

@@rhysnichols8608 True. The use of individual atrocities to dehumanize an entire army of men following orders has always been one of most dangerous tricks of war.

Nice
The Great War briefly talked about this way back when Indy Niedel was host. I believe his hypothesis for the myth was that a soldier was killed from an artillery blast, and the shrapnel pinned his corpse against a tree or barn door.
That nonsense comes from the movie Passchendaele. It was far more likely someone made it up and it just grew. There's never been any proof that such a thing happened whether on purpose or not.
Well greatly appreciated fellows!!! Congratulations. The animation has gotten alot better. Looking good simple history!
Holy balls! That WW1 must've been terrifying! I'm just glad no one got hurt.

All those 60 million soldiers that shot at each other for over 4 years, none of them died
Could you imagine! It would’ve been one of the worst wars in history!
Just like the TV series

Next you have to do a video about the allies doing some horrific thing to balance it out.
And this time a real incident, not a Myth.
@@leone.6190 like the canadian killing of captured soldiers
I remember reading about this in Steven Ambrose's "Citizen Soldier" during the Battle of the Bulge in the Second World War. American soldiers found a crucified comrade and crucified a German in retaliation. I believe the account said something along the lines of "they got the message and we stopped finding crucified Americans."
yes, I have no doubt that your side did this to Germans. I find it hard to believe that we did such stuff and I'm positive that it is just US and Brit propaganda to paint Germany in a negative light. It is well known that you are barbarians and love to torture and kill. Ask the native Americans and the Black slaves.
...Yeah, as much as I believe the story in the video is made up, I could DEFINITELY see the Nazis doing this.

This just seems like propaganda. It also looks like a lot of commenters don't hear the alleged the narrator says all the time.
Allies: “Oh yeah. Y’all are gonna be the villains next time…”
If the shoe fits...
Whether it happened or not the story affected the Canadian soldiers so much that the rules of war were thrown aside and no prisoners would taken

I wasn’t sure if it was a real ad at first

I have a hard time believing the truth of the crucifixion. Most Germans in the 1910’s wouldn’t have even thought to do that as many grew up as devout Catholics/Christians. Removing Christ from the cross and replacing it with a victim of torture would have been overwhelmingly frowned upon by the ordinary German soldier of Christian faith.
this takes WW1 to the next level
Actually this was one of "fear" tactics employed by the imperial Japanese during the 2nd Sino Japanese war and later WW2 on the Pacific front.
Does it though?
I never would have thought that any kind of story about any canadians would ever come out of a history channel ever again
Most likely false..
Crucified by the French? The Germans wouldn't have done that since they had no anti-semitic leanings until well after Hitler took control, and even then he specifically gave WW1 Jewish veterans exemption from the anti-Jewish legislation until WW2 started.

I'm Canadian. Before I was born again, I was quite vengeful. Growing up hunting and fishing in British Columbia, I was picked on by many because they mistook my kindness for weakness, until one day, one of the bullies physically destroyed my hunting blind and cut up my tarp. I tracked him and his friend and messed with them all night while they camped by: using my slingshot to bombard them with stones while I'm in the cover of darkness, spraying them with Doe-in-heat urine while they slept, taking apart their rifles and threw away their firing pins, and the pièce de résistance was leading a chasing bear right into their camp.
Don't worry, both of them survived. 😇
