About a month ago I was at one of our local deli/ grocery stores, in Mims Fla., filling up my water jugs when a beat up truck pulled in. The old guy got out with 2 jugs, so I let him cut ahead cause I had quite a few. We got talking and it turned out to be Michael Hurley!
I lived in and around Winooski from '79 to '87, and spent many a fine night at the Mill. Always wondered if I was there the night this was recorded. Bought my cassette copy from Snock himself at Nick Hill's Quiet Life lounge in Greenpoint back around 1990.
I'll join the chorus: many, many thanks for this. The world can always use more Doc Snock, and here you are serving up some real lo-fi Hurley goodness. Cheers to you, Mr. Harker.
Full disclosure- I just bumped into Michaels incredible music by way of the film "Lucky" featuring the great Harry Dean Stanton. I absolutely love bands like "the Youngbloods", Grateful Dead, Sons of Champlin, etc. and I have never heard of MH- go figure. Anyway I'm listening now. Thank you for this post- It sounds Fantastic!
Hey all, just ordered a tour-only tape that Snock sold in Australia. When it arrives in a few weeks I'll rip it and upload it here, along with those two comics of his.
So good. I’m enjoying this as much as anything I’ve ever become obsessed with, including JJ Cale, The Fall, Camper Van Beethoven, Wire, Jane Weaver.... What a voice. I suppose I’m too late to see him perform live..
Many thanks for this. Snock Shoppe is closed (tempraraily I hope). Soon as it opens I'll pull this down. In the interim I dandered over to Amazon and picked up "Snockgrass". Which I had never heard. Go well.
I've bought this from him, but would love to have a copy of your digitization if poss. Thanks for upping this lovely album. "Hackle or Jackle" is a definite fave.
Dang....Thanks! Nakamichi? (your cassette deck) I can't imagine anything else able to make a tape sound so good! Nice converter too. Doesn't happen to be a Schiit Jil? Cool, also, The site is currently open and offering a CDR of this
Gary Ives Thanks! I played it through an Akai deck (nothing special) and recorded the audio through the line level input of my Zoom H6. I wish I had the scratch for a Nak, haha.
For any and all interested: I purchased some comics Snock made some time in the 70's, featuring Boone and Jocko. Keep an eye out for it! I'll be uploading them as soon as they arrive in the mail.
It's available at the "Michael Hurley - Official Site" [snockonews.net] website---by mail only, for $17.00 which includes postage. Mail check, or money order to: Michael Hurley * 93206 Brownsmead Hill Road * Astoria, Oregon * 97103
Here's the first of the two comics of Snock's: ua-cam.com/video/rlr608XAL7o/v-deo.html I'll be uploading the second in a week or so, as well as the tour tape when it arrives.

Winooski is Brooklyn for Burlington....Cheaper, weirder, pretty cool back then. Now I am sure it must be a yuppy snake pit.....Loved the old dam used to sit there and drink Genessee Ale
Hey Do It, I lived in and around Winooski from '79 to '87. Did you ever get to go to The Mill while it was still open? My all-time favorite bar. Back in 1980 when this was recorded, Winooski was a very depressed run down town, and most of the old mill buildings were still abandoned. They were turned into apartments and a mall a couple of years later.
@@seanconlon2408 I remember a couple great places on the main drag. There was the place with the jazz brunches and there was Middle Earth, that was short lived but great. Others I can't recall
+Aaron Harker i do not. but i do have a mint condition original pressing of blue navigator that i grabbed up here recently. i also got the pleasure of bootlegging 4 shows he played at the NMF this year and got to spend a few hiurs talking to snock 1on1. man i would really love to find this cassette, among a few others to go in my collection. you know of anywhere i could obtain a copy of this?
+Aaron Harker and i dont have any of the 8 tracks. i would really love to get my hands on those as well. but im mostly looking for all the first pressings of his original releases. and any bootlegs. i have a hell of a collection of his bootlegs on cassettes
Dang, nice find. I haven't seen a copy that's sold for any less than a hundred. I own a copy of the 8-track version of that and the Korean mini LP, it's a great record. Hopefully I'll get the chance to add the record to my collection some day. I don't know where you could find the cassette (besides discogs, but that's a waiting game), but Mr. Hurley does sell CDr copies on his website.

Wonderful recording. The music, the crowd noises, the girls having fun.... sounds like a great night.

It makes me happy to know that other people like this as much as I do :)
Along with "Redbirds at Folk City", I would say this recording captures live Michael Hurley better than anything else. It's just outstanding.
Great music can be fun. Thank you.

I'm not asking for a download, just saying thanks for putting it on here. I'm loving the vibe of his music. Good stuff.

Actually I just discovered that I am. He toured the UK in June. Gutted.
Glad you're enjoying it! Mr. Hurley's library of work is downright magical. What albums of his have you listened to so far?
I was familiar with most of the artists you named, except for Jane Weaver- I'm really digging it. Currently listening to The Silver Globe.
Saw him last night. Plays somewhat frequently at the Sou'wester Lodge in WA, fwiw
