By your own admission, you probably won't read this. And I'll agree it's for good reasons. Still, I want to say that I'm a new fan. I ordered your new album for my son. Empath is the antithesis to what is wrong with the world today. I support you. Please continue and carry on doing what you do and I pray you become prosperous doing it. Your message is good, and we need more people with a good message in the world today.

Dev, you may be my spiritual president, I haven't quite decided yet, but maybe. I've been quite happily listening.
You've been stepping up in creative, important artistic ways, for many years. Possibly mentally, spiritually, internal balance, knowing self-wise too, from what I'm hearing here. Keep on stepping, I'd say it's working. Important work. Your content, delivery and perspective quenchers my soul! Thank. You.
From Strapping to Spirits Will Collide.. Why?..Some masterful progression. Well done, I tip my hat to you.
Your far away, close to my heart friend.
Sending mucho love from Sydney, Australia.

This album holds a lot of meaning for me as the year it came out, I was dealing with a lot of heavy transformational stuff in my life. I would have liked to hear more about the lyrical and compositional inspiration of the songs on this album. This is actually my favorite SYL album. I love the riffs, lyrics, performances, and vocal hooks on The New Black.
I understand, though, that Dev needed to shed this skin to continue to make music with authenticity and integrity and not be pigeonholed into one thing. What followed after this album was so dynamic.

I remember when people started staring at their phones when this all started. I had a flip phone for many years while the screens took over the world lol. Until work provided me with one, then I too got pulled into the bs of social media but never to the extreme.
Since covid, I’ve gotten rid of social media and I couldn’t be happier! We also stopped watching the news which has also helped.

I like hearing Dev talk about his work and anxiety. I've been working in the COVID ICU since March and my sense of anxiety has dramatically lessened since then - almost cause i've been too busy to bother. But, listening to Dev talk about the way he feels has really helped me understand what all my friends and family who have been forced to do things differently than they have for years has really helped me understand what my friends' and family's anxiety looks like. Honestly, I hope Dev finds out how much these podcasts have helped (even people who don't listen to his music). Even if the world ever returns to "normal", i hope dev still checks in with everyone from time to time. His honesty is beautiful.

That's pretty wild, I've done the same this year. I just stopped using social media other than maybe checking it once a week or month. And I used to be hardcore reader when I was younger, I've now lost that ability to focus and I've been practicing it, similar to meditation, and finding more happiness through that, through being able to focus on something when I decide to cut unnecessary stuff out.
You might want to start using some kind of adblocker like ublock origin to get rid of all the invasive ads online. It will greatly help.
The New Black is the first album of SYL that got me, it was straightforward enough and had that raw emotion and energy. And the somewhat sarcastic attitude. I loved Far Beyond Metal in every way, You Suck was also something that I enjoyed. It was like my personality or what I wanted to say back then. That I knew wasn't the truth, but felt like the truth and was fun to say. It was a way to get it out of the system for not having your own words.

Of course not strictly, sometimes it happens (more then enough)when i visiting friends. That fact makes me feel based on my own intuation. After a while you enjoy it as a gift, couse you will find out that you never take anything to serious. if any informations reaching me, my first thought is, whats behind that story? And sometimes weeks later, when thoose informations got corrected or chanched, 90% of the time i find out that i was right with my own opinion. Thats a good feeling!

As an avid reader I completely understand someone's inability to focus on a book, especially the kind of book that doesn't hold your attention. Since you're into reading now I recommend Lost Horizon by James Hilton, I remember reading it during a heavy social-media induced anxiety period of my life and it helped me reframe current events in the world as less important than what's happening in my personal life right now.

I agree that TNB does not stand the test of time quite like City or Alien. I loved it when it was released but going back I can pick out maybe 2 or 3 songs I really like. The rest of the album just screams that moment in time. I can blast City today and it sounds just as relevant as it did 25 years ago.

  • @Ichinin
    @Ichinin 3 роки тому

First CD i got was City, then took a break from metal for a while, a few years ago i was overjoyed to see that SYL had made new albums and i got all of them, then i discovered DTP as well, got a bunch of those too, including some live DVDs. Still awesome!
I think that one have to make peace with your inner dark self, not push it away. Yes, the world sucks, and i also skip television (total crap nowadays), I've 100% gone over to just youtube and i watch people that talk about my specific interests, like Airplanes, Hiking, Cyber security, Tornado chasers, Documentaries etc... I miss out on some things - but i really don't care. There is too much focus on frivolous stuff like celebrities, sports and politicians in modern media.
I do read the news from time to time but I've learned to condensate it and not click on any article that looks interesting, I've also learned not to read the news to often as i get depressed when i read the news. Now, like you I'm much more happy.
Loved your demo at NAMM btw - Hillarious! :o) I still watch that from time to time.

Reading seems to take me a month to get into if I have left it awhile.

Order some Oxygen Concentrator machines for the family. Most can give 25% more oxygen and I believe filters some impurities. Portable ones would be ideal. Could get Ionizers to drop air impurities to the floor. Other air purifiers too! Keep any pets you have safe.

Funny Devs feelings towards the smell of roses. I always think of death when I smell roses, because of funerals I've been too as a kid.

Starts talking about the album at 31:12
(He might say some things before that, but I skipped through the intro and didn't pick anything up.)

Normally I'm here for Devin's self therapy but today I'm here wondering what ever happened to Snorkle the Shark?
All kidding aside keep it up Dev! Tbh it was nice knowing that you had the willpower to stop before any serious damage happened. Too many musicians would've ended up being pressured to continue and either get themselves killed 5 years later or slowly slide into mediocrity and fade away. I can tell these podcasts are really starting to help you in some way even if they were uncomfortable at first. Can't wait to hear about Ziltoid next Podcast!

Maybe we were always anxious as a species and social media finally allows us to see how big the problem is. Problems can't be solved until we understand the scale of them.

Lot of 7 string on this album. Something I'd like to see again on another Devin album. Wonder if he'll ever make an 8 string song lol.

He did use 8 string tunings in the past - although in his case it was a baritone 7 string. But going back to Synchestra and New Black, later on Ziltoid and Deconstruction... Planet of the Apes is an obvious reference here

we always need to search for other free, convenient and not limiting ways of consuming and letting out information, it's an infinite loop. Once it was a word -> a radio -> a TV -> a UA-cam/social networks. UA-cam became a TV-2 long time ago, something will be changed, it's inevitable, where is a demand is an offer.
