    Very interesting video, I had never thought of the philosophy of the styles, but it made me think and elaborate on your thoughts. The English style is more military in that you almost wear a uniform. The structured and neat fits are very reminiscent of military style. Also the the practicality is very military-inspired as well, in that you wear the appropriate clothes and equipment for the appropriate occasion. The Italian style is more focused on personal expression and of course "sprezzatura."

    British suiting has its roots in military culture, a suit coat is a military tunic made for civilians, leather shoes come from riding boots. As such the ideas behind a suited gentleman also come from military discipline and obeisance. I therefore feel that Italian nonchalance is kinda counter to this mindset, taking the style and making it more relaxed. Basically the theory behind both is at opposite poles.

  • @YardenJZ
    @YardenJZ 5 років тому +47

    The video is wonderfully made and very easy to watch.
    I never understood Sprezzatura.
    When one makes these intended mistakes one of two things will happen:
    1. One is thought to be ignorant by those who fail to perceive what it is one is trying to do.
    2. By those who do perceive it, it would be obvious that much thought and effort were put into the outfit.
    In both cases. the point is missed.
    To me, effortless elegance is playing by the rules, but making it look as if one was born with those rules in mind.
    Intended breaking of rules should, therefore, be subtle in nature and magnitude. not wearing a watch over the cuff in a cry for attention.
    And yes, I undoubtedly identify with the British school of thought when it comes to sartorialism (and a great many other things).

    • @youandijmh7998
      @youandijmh7998 4 роки тому +7

      I have always thought that true Sprezzatura was already misunderstood when they coined the term in that court book. I think that guy who wrote it, tried to conceptualise something ungraspable that he saw in those people who somehow have this "thing".
      In my perspective, I think Sprezzatura is more of a rhythm, a vibe, a way of walking, a way of behaving, that conveys this feeling of "I don't care". People have tried to put it on the clothing, but I think it's all in the behaviour.
      I've gotten that ungraspable "effortless" vibe with a couple people, and it's not because they purposely undid a button or wore their watch over their cuffs, but just because they look like they (like you said), just don't know better than to dress stylish, and feel invincible, so they start giving of this aura of "misbehaviour". "You say I need to do this? Whoops, now I broke the rule, what you gonna do." *smugly walks away with two ladies*

      I agree wholeheartedly 👍

    • @azizquadri5824
      @azizquadri5824 3 роки тому +1

      Could not agree more with this comment thread. Sprezzatura is indeed a state of mind, and like the gentleman above me said, it is indeed a way of carrying yourself and your body language as opposed to how you wear your clothes.
      Now, I would further add to the point that sprezzatura is all about comfort, more specifically; psychological comfort in your attire.
      The graceful vibe of sprezzatura comes when someone has become such a natural at dressing well that the whole habit of being well dressed has become that person's second nature, and because that person has become so natural at style, they have ultimately become comfortable in dressing well. They don't fear or care about being judged, and they don't care about the opinions of others nor do they feel out of place due to the way they are dressed.
      They've developed a stupendous level of confidence and mental comfort in their clothing due to years of dressing well, and now they convey a certain level of ease, grace and effortlessness in their body language.

      To my understanding, Sprezzatura is to men as French Chic is to women. There’s not really a word for it, it’s just that feel of effortless elegance, that to be stylish is just how one is.
      That being said I’m completely with you- British style makes far more sense to me and is something I just prefer. I don’t even like French chic for myself.

    Ein schöner Zugang zu diesem Thema und gar nicht so lahm, wie du auf Instagram angekündigt hast. ;)
    Und es stimmt: Wenn man sich z.B. Simon Crompton's "Style Breakdown"-Reihe auf Permanent Style ansieht, fallen viele angeblich so stark divergierende Details zwischen britischen und italienischen Schneidern gar nicht so deutlich aus. Die wahrgenommenen Unterschiede lassen sich in Summe oft besser aus der Top Down-Perspektive erklären, also den unterschiedlichen "Wurzelphilosophien" in Bezug auf Eleganz.
    Ein großes Lob auch für die sehr charmante Präsentation. Wir Deutschen cringen ja eigentlich gerne, wenn Landsleute Englisch sprechen. Ist bei dir aber ganz und gar nicht der Fall! Ein kleiner Hinweis (sehr deutsch, ich weiß): Bei "lapel" liegt die Betonung meines Wissens auf der zweiten Silbe.

    As an Italian, I personally don’t feel represented by the look of Agnelli. I would never put a watch on my sleeve. Again, I prefer vintage or classic looks. The English style is very nice, the only things I am not a big fan of are those long socks.
    I am curious to know what is your personal style and why - maybe you’ve done a video on it, but, again, I am new to your channel so I don’t know.

    OK ich schreibe das mal in Deutsch, da mir das sonst etwas schwer auf Englisch fällt.
    Für die Gesundheit und Kraft liebe ich "Barfuss-Schuhe" (Also Schuhe mit minimal Sohle). Das ich besser Kraft ausüben kann, je besser ich den Untergrund spühre.
    Das mag nun etwas komisch wirken, aber ich bin halt von den Oldtime-Feats of Strength (Kraftakten) zu der "alten Kleidsamkeit" gekommen.
    Auch fühlen sich meine Füsse in den eleganten Schuhen meist nicht wohl. Das liegt vielleicht auch an meinen breiteren Füssen. Hast Du eine Ahnung (oder sollte ich lieber beim formalen Sie bleiben?).
    Wie ich das lösen kann?
    Auch trage ich wenn gerne Stiefel. Welche Modelle gab es in den 1920ern, die es heute noch gibt und die den Anzug nicht komplett "ruinieren".
    Für Sachdienliche Hinweise wäre ich sehr dankbar.
    Liebe Grüße aus Hamburg.

    I prefer the American style. Not the extreme version put on by Thom Browne, but William Buckley Jr. and JFK.

    I have German relatives and was married to a German for 4 years almost 40 years ago. He's been in America more than 40 years and his English is far, far better than yours. Your English sounds like that of my cousin from Bielefeld; it's like ASMR (?) for me.
    Also, I used to teach at Göttingen and Bonn, (an English speakers class on history and foreign policy) and while I was impressed with the quality of my students' English, yours is far, far better.
    So no need for you to apologise for ANYTHING about your English!

    I think in England you want to be right dressed for all the occasions, in Italy you want to be attractive. Here we say "attirare gli sguardi".

      Ich mache fast alles auf Englisch. Ich hab nur manchmal Lust auf Deutsch, weil es für mich einfacher ist.
