It's not satisfactory, it's bullshit
The solution at the beginning is complete if you just put the extra piece on top of the already made letter H so that it doesn't protrude when looking directly from above.
Like, if the 'correct' solution requires you to look at the puzzle from a certain angle, then there's nothing to stop you from looking at it from directly above and pretending the extra piece doesn't exist.

The thing that i hate about those type of puzzles is that they are correct only from a certain perspective. But if you consider correct solutions wich are correct only from a very specific perspective, you could just take the pieces, put them like you did in the beginning and then put the last piece on top of any other piece, if you look at the letter directly from above it's actually an H.
It's the exact same thing as solving a Rubik's cube by replacing the stickers. It isnt some genius foresight, it's arbitrary as hell & feels like it should be against the rules. Although this solution, despite being pretentious, is also creative. Well shit
Alternate solution:
1. Take the two small pieces and combine them with two medium pieces so that they form rectangular prisms. Do the same with the remaining medium piece and one long piece.
2. Put the long-medium pair end to end with one of the medium-short pairs.
3. Put the other medium-short pair perpindicular on the right side.
4. Take the long piece and put it on the right side so that the long side faces toward the other pieces, the point is aligned with the top edge of the perpindicular pieces, and the bottom face is aligned with the long-medium pair.

It can't be solved in two dimensions. The reason is - surface area. Take a look at the pieces: they are all trapezoids. Thus the areas are calculated via formula h*(a+b)/2, where a and b are length of those parallel lines, and h - height, distance between them (you can see it as two identical of these stacked in such way they form a rectangle with one side equal to h, and another - to a+b, thus 2S = h*(a+b). It also applies to trapezoids with no right angles, but now it's not really important, I'm just visualizing). Where were we? So there are 7 trapezoids with areas of 0.5, 1.5 and 2.5 little squares. Notice that any two areas summed leaves us with a whole number, and there are seven, thus whole area wouldn't be a whole number. (It would actually be 10.5 little squares). The point is - surface area of that H must be equal to 10.5. Because of that at least one "side" of the letter would be not whole, and, at the same time, rational. √2 (length of the slope on a little triangle) is irrational, that means that some squares would be shifted half of its side length, and it's kinda intuitive that it's not gonna work.

The slanted cuts of the pieces give you a clue of how to solve it. Look at which sides of each piece match the sides of other pieces.
For example, take two pieces
Piece 1. Piece 2
B B
|\ A |_\ C
A |_| C D
D
Side c of piece 1 matches side a of piece 2, which hints that they may be next to each other in the solution.
Then if you notice that the slanted sides are at the same angle, it hints that they all end up facing the same direction in the finished solution.
if the rules stated 'the y axis DOES matter', you would have a point, but that was a rule you made up based on presumption, which is the foundation of this puzzle
