  • Hello to all my wonderful wavies and curly and coily coterie!
I'm back with another product review and this time I'm reviewing a hair care line that Dove came out with about a year ago, Dove Amplified Textures. This line consists of a sulfate-free shampoo, a conditioner, a hair recovery mask, a leave-in conditioner, a butter cream, a light hold gel, a hard hold gel and a scalp treatment. Not all of these products are silicone free or curly girl method approved. The conditioner, leave-in conditioner, hair mask, butter cream and the scalp tonic do all have amodimethicone in them, so they do have silicone. But the shampoo is sulfate free, and both of the gel's are silicone and alcohol free. The hard hold gel does have PEG-12 dimethicone in it, but it is water soluble, so shouldn't cause build-up.
If you don't know much about Dove, there are two things I'd like to note here. First is that Dove overall has what they call the Dove Self Esteem Project. The goal of this project is to help young people build a positive self image. With the increase in social media usage along with constant ads, all of which can be heavily filtered, it's hard for young people to know what's real and what's not and this can lead a lot of them to have issues with negative body images. So Dove has created resources for young people, and for parents and teachers to help improve this.
The other thing of note is that along with their Amplified Textures line, Dove has created the C.R.O.W.N Coalition (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair). The goal of this coalition is to drive legislation to make hair discrimination illegal. Many black people are still discriminated against for their natural hair or protective styles and told that it's unprofessional. So I think this is something that is very important to discuss and acknowledge that it's happening and work to make a better world for black people.
I could not get ahold of all of the products in this line. I wasn't able to get ahold of the shampoo, though I do still want to try it. And I chose not to buy the conditioner, the mask or the leave-in conditioner, due to the silicone. I do occasionally use silicone in my hair, but only if it's the last product I use in styling to add moisture. So out of all the products that have silicone in them, I chose to try the Moisture Shaping Butter Cream.
The Finishing Gel and the Styling Gel are CGM approved.
Overall, I am a huge fan of this line. The products made my hair feel so soft and moisturized and gave it good shine and definition. They were all easy to work through my hair and just easy to work with in general. My biggest complaint though, beside the silicone in many of the products, was the smell. It is a very strong, perfume-like scent that, especially when all the products are paired, is very overwhelming. So if you are sensitive to scents or looking to go fragrance free, this line is not for you.
My favorite product, however, has to be the Finishing Gel, or the light hold gel. On day 2, I ended up getting stuck out in the humidity and rain. Despite this, the gel held up fantastic and my hair looked great even onto day 3 or 4. The curls still had great definition and were easy to refresh. So if you live in a humid environment are a looking for a gel to keep the humidity from making your hair frizzy, I would definitely check it out!
If you live in a dry environment on the other hand and struggle from a dry scalp, give the Scalp Tonic a try. I used this for two weeks leading up to the filming of this video, and it definitely helped improve my itchy scalp. The Dove Scalp Tonic is one of few scalp products that uses niacinamide to help hydrate your scalp.

Too bad they didn't offer a complete line without silicones & sulfates. I love what Dove "says" they want to accomplish, but the proof is not in the pudding when it comes to what a lot of textured hair women say _they_ want. Dove should listen better. The lighter hold gel seems amazing. Your hair is absolutely gorgeous.

I agree, I do wish they made the line without silicones in it. I think it would make it just that much better. I really liked the light hold gel though, so at least there's that.
I'm curious if you could expand upon what you said about listening to women with textured hair more. Are you just referring to the silicones? I'd love to learn more about what you're thinking. ☺️

I would never have known about Dove support of the Crown Act if I were not checking out your channel. I won’t use silicones though.

That's definitely fair. Silicones are tricky at best. It's part of why I like the gels so much. They're silicone free and work great. But the rest of the line I wouldn't really recommend to everyone. It's too bad they have silicone in them.

Have u tried layering the 2 hair gels? If so in what order? What is ur hair type? Density?
    Thanks!

I actually haven't tried it yet, but I would probably suggest doing the light gel first, then the heavier. I have medium density, medium thickness, and low porosity. Hope that helps!

I've been following the CGM for years. The only thing i stay away from is silicone and wax. Other than that I do other non-cgm things.

Silicones and waxes are definitely tricky! I've actually gotten to where I will use them on occasion, but they work ok with my hair and that's not the case for everyone. Sometimes it's better to just avoid them.
