Late 80's early 90's I used a Ric 330 into a HiWatt DR504. Still have both and we started playing again after a 25 year break.
Still use the Ric but into an AC15, HiWatt volumes are frowned upon. No guitar has a nice action and string feel as far as I'm concerned.
I'd really like a 12 string. My first was a new 360 jetglo in 1989. Then in 2006 I went nuts buying a new 620 AFG, '04 330 MB and a '78 4001. I love them.

I have that exact guitar. It was a gift from my wife for my 60th. It was manufactured in 1997. It had never been played but rather stored for years, in its case (with all the paperwork) under someone's bed. And thus, quite a find. I do play it but not nearly as often as I should. And yes, mostly when playing Beatle tunes. It is stunning. And I do cherish it. Thank you for this video. You play beautifully.

isn't his original name Adolph Rickenbacher? As a German, the "wrong" pronunciation, although still incorect, is closer to how you would pronounce Rickebacher as a Swiss guy...

Officially, Rickenbacker pronounces back as back, not bock.
I'm afraid I don't know the Swiss accent, so I don't know how good old Addie would have said his name.
@@Voltanaut interesting. It's just natural that pronunciation changes, when emigrating to another country. After all C.F. Martin would also be pronounced different in Germany, where he was from. I too always used the "american" pronuncation....

I’ve played Rickenbacker basses since the 70’s, I’ve always loved them! Like every bass or guitar, there’s a learning curve and once you get comfortable and understand how to get what you’re looking for, Rickenbacker basses are extremely expressive!

I own a Rickenbacker 330/12... can't play it on every song, of course... but theres nothing like it in the world. Absolutely love it. A phenomenal piece of art, really. Pure magic in your hands. Go for it if you can.

I've owned 9 of them over the last 50 years, never been unhappy with 'em. the first was a 1964 450-6 jet-glo and the last was a 1964 360-12 maple-glo (one of 6 made that year) wish I could get even ONE of them back! alas , health issues...

One thing I’ve noticed about my 620 is that I can have the neck almost dead straight with no buzzing, and super low action. It’s a very well built guitar.

Built to be almost flat with minimal or no relief... often get screwed up by guitar techs who don't know this... and try and add relief with the dual truss rod...
rick with hi gain are real beast with overdrive and fuzz !
I think the model 620 can do anything a Telecaster can do, only sounding like a Rickenbacker.
It does have some unique Tele similarities.
Those 620 are unfortunately very rare in Brazil...
I own a Rick 360 that I use only occasionally for playing clean sounding rhythm but, after seeing your video, I tried to play it for the first time with a LOT of distortion and it really worked for my ears and fingers !
It's a 1994 one and it costed me US$ 1,620 in 2002 here in Rio de Janeiro.
Now I'm in love with it again !

Indeed, Celso, a friend of mine here in Curitiba has a fireglo 330 that we were vying to trade for a 620. None to be found in a radius of 2000km.
I saved for 6 months to buy a 360..was one of the best things I've done. The sound brilliant, especially with a vox amp with top boost

My late wife bought me a 360 c63 for our 20th anniversary. Since then I have added a 350 v63 in fireglo, a 330-12 in maple glo, and a 360-12 in fireglo. These are my favorite guitars. This is a great video. Thanks!

I’ve owned a 06 Mapleglo 360, then sold for a 08 Jetglo 370 and also had a 08 Ric 4003 bass. My kids were gifted Rics because I decided to simplify squad however nice to have access to them if mood strikes me! One big misnomer is that they’re just jangle. Pete Townsend and Paul Weller proved you can crank and rock Rics( just like Gretsches) I’ve cranked Rics through Deluxe Reverb and Marshall JMP! Sound awesome and excellent build quality!

One of the best looking guitars ever. I couldn't afford one so I got a danelectro as my first guitar. It was the only lefty in the store 😊 If you love jangle like I do a danelectro is another option. Lipstick pickups with bar magnets can give jangle. Toaster pickups are another option.
Great video, I am a bass player, but learning a few chords on guitar, it's nice you took the time to explain, kit just the sounds, but the quality of the instrument, you get your point over well, for example, the Gretsch electromatic range vs a 6120 and the price difference, even Fender do the player series, I now have a better understanding on the price vs the quality, Rickenbacker have stood their ground and continue to put out top notch guitars, we really do get what we pay for and they hold their value well on the 2nd hand market.

The neck pickup sounds as good as anything else for blues, jazz, etc. Like you said, it’s an electric guitar and you can use it for anything.
It's not a question of need, it's *WANT*, and I have four of them - all 12-strings. Got the first one in 1968.
Currently I'm lusting after a fifth, a 660/12 - similar body style to your 620, but a 12-string with toaster pickups & checkerboard binding. Sounds the same, but I think it's more aesthetically pleasing to look at.
You can get a modern "toaster top" pickup from Rickenbacker. It's called a scatter wound; combines the characteristics of the original hand wound "sound" with the higher output of the "high gain" pickup, and again it has the visual aesthetic of the original toaster pickups.
Rickenbacker used to be RickenBACHer and it was pronounced that way up until Adolph Rickenbacher (Eddie's cousin) changed the spelling of his name to make it less German sounding sometime around WWI. But for some reason they used the archaic spelling on guitars up until the time FC Hall bought Electro String Instruments from Adolph in the early 50s and changed the spelling to it's current form.
Just finished reading Play it Loud, the electric guitar history. I never realized Rickenbacker was right there with Fender, Gibson etc...when it all began.
Not sure if they’re for me, but they certainly are gorgeous and sound sweet.
I remember my guitar teacher back in the early 80’s had a Rick.
Those gaininer tones were fantastic. Never heard a Rickenbacher used in that way but it works great.
Steppenwolf, the hard rock 60’s band, guitarists used Rickenbackers. People often stereotype them as one trick ponys because the birds and the beatles but theyre much more versatile than that. :)
@@vincentmena99 I know John Fogerty used one in CCR and there's definitely some dirtier tones there, but not quite this overdriven. Didn't know Steppenwolf used them, great piece of trivia.
I would say that extra knob effects output in some way too. You can kind of clean up your signal with it. My uncle has a 330 that I’ve spent some time with. It too has the high gain pickups. I love that guitar. It came with action so low and smooth it makes playing effortless. It was less money than I thought it would be too. It’s beautiful. I really liked the pickups with my Princeton. They took pedals amazing. Some of the best sounds I’ve ever gotten out of my rig. Really great to play too. I agree with you that it’s really inspiring to play.
As far as I know it’s somehow technically a second volume knob for the neck pickup, which allows you to add it in more to the bridge to thicken the sound or back it off to balance the volume. But I’m not positive and I’m certainly no tech.
@@JackFossett yes I’ve heard that description too and I’m sure that’s right but I don’t remember it being able to actually turn the volume all the way down. Like if you have the volume up and then go to the “special” knob and lower it all the way you still have signal. Just a less full sounding thinner signal. More jangly almost. That’s how I remember it anyway. It has been a few months though since I played it. I really liked whatever that knob did though. A lot.
The fifth little knob is like a "presence" control for the neck pickup. It affects the volume of course, but doesn't turn it all the way down. One neat trick mentioned in the guitar's little user's manual is to turn the tone knob on the neck pickup all the way down, then put both pickups on and use the little knob as a sort of tone control. You can get some really smooth sounds that way.
I've had one since I was 16 and I an 72 now. They are just great guitars. Thanks for an excellent review of the 620!!
I always loved that Black Rickenbacher John Lennon used to play. I must say Jack great playing here I like the way the double stops just break up.What a beautiful well crafted instrument. That thing rings with authority.
Thank you! Yeah it has a different kind of responsiveness that works really well, very clear and even tone. John Lennon’s was a 325 - I believe his original one was refinished before they even offered black as a finish. They call it “Jetglo”
The story is that the black Ricky was originally the normal red burst that Rickenbackers are most often seen in. John got in Germany, it was one of the first 2 to get imported to Germany. Rickenbacker gave guitars to the Beatles later on. Brian Epstein, the Beatles manager was very image concious, and insisted that the guitars were painted black because it was more in the Beatle’s style.
John Lennon’s Rickenbacker was a kid-sized model. And when he was playing it on The Ed Sullivan Show, nobody cared about such things!

Just got done restoring a friend's 1980 4003 Bass. The wiring had been jacked with by an unscrupulous tech and as such the guitar had sat dormant for years. I rewired it per 1970's spec and added shielded cable between the Rick-o-sound and mono jacks. After lining the cavities and the back of the pickguard with copper shielding. . .it is as quiet as you could ever want and the TONE is amazing. You just can't beat a Rickenbacker. What a fantastic company.

That's a beautiful Rick 620, I would love to own one because they look so nice. I own a 450 model from 1975, which was the poor man's version, but sounds essentially the same.
I have a 325s (like Fogerty, Lennon) & it plays ANYTHING! It's Maple glow with black pickguard & black headstock. Both were not offered at that time so I had to pay extra, but it looks sooo cool. It has the toaster pickups & it is very active & loud. I can play on lower volume than someone with a Les Paul & it cuts right through. I've learned from other Rick players that you just have to play it to see what it sounds like, that not all pickups were alike on earlier models. (mine is 1980) Most pickups are more consistent these days. I have a Vox AC30 & Fender Vibrolux, and when I pull my Rick & my Gretsch out...well, it's like bringing a gun to a knife fight! I have played in punk, power pop & rockabilly bands, and It sounds great. You will not look or sound like everybody else. But that's what will set you apart.
I’ve been eyeing one hard for the past few months. I plugged in a Rich 330 into a Marshall jcm 20 watt head. I was surprised how well the guitar sounded with grit. I am pretty much a. Metal/hard rock guy mostly but I have covered/played all styles. The feel was unique very little string tension in standard tuning. Def want to buy one, the Rick can cover a lot of genres

Been contemplating a Rick for decades. I’m running out of time! The narrow neck of most Ricks is also an issue for many.
Huge Peter Buck fan, so I got a loan out when I was 17 and got a 330 / 6 string. Yeah, it's never going to be good for heavy rock, but much more versatile than just jingle jangle 60's pop. Fantastic action, love it.
Guy Picciotto from Fugazi and the Smithereens' Jim Babjak have something to say about heavy tones on a Ric...
I play a 1977 4001, and it's amazing, I've had it for 40+ years. A Rick sounds like a Rick, just like a Tele sounds like a Tele and a Les Paul, etc. There is nothing like a Rick 12 string, too. Accept no substitute!
Finally a demo with decent gained up demo section. Very helpful.
I have had several over the years. I currently have a 360/12, 325C64 and 4003 bass. They are great and they all play wonderfully.
The 5th knob is indeed a pickup volume blend knob that operates only when both pickups are selected. Unlike a Les Paul, or other Gibson-type guitar with two pickups, where the middle position is simple a 50/50 blend, on a Rickenbacker, you can adjust that middle position sound to your personal preference.
I've owned three. I kept my 330-6, but sold the 330-12 and the 620. Why? I loved the sound of the 12. But! What a PAIN to restring. (I can enjoy the sound via Byrds, Petty, et al.) The 620 just wasn't a good ft for me. In fact, Rickenbackers aren't as good a fit for me as Fender, Gretsch, Gibson. I'd be happier w/o the fifth knob. The R tailpiece is a bit of a pain. ButI I did keep the 330-6. Hey, it's a Rickenbacker! Really wanted one when I was kid. Boomer here! Grew up on The Beatles, Byrds, et al. Loved the revival of that sound via Petty, Bangles, et al. You make that 620 sing, Jack! Enjoy that gorgeous baby!
Yeah I forgot to mention that, I did have trouble stringing it up with that R tailpiece. Looks great, but functionally I wasn't a fan.

@@JackFossett Yes. Bridge pickup goes to a Wampler Mini Ego compressor and then to a Fender Deluxe Reverb. Neck pickup goes to my full board, mainly effected by a Keeley Compressor Plus and an EHX Canyon set to DMM mode, and out to a Vox AC15C1.
Great review! Appreciate you showing all the angles and dangles of this guitar. My favorite switch position is the middle one especially when chording or rhythm playing. Seems that position best expresses the 620, and all Rics for that matter, for the most recognizable Ric tones.
You're right. Rics are not very recognized for lead playing. I don't know that I could pick out one playing lead with the exception that a player is playing rhythm first then lead like Peter Buck and others did.
It should be known that I do not play guitar. I'm just a rabid guitar aficionado who got turned on to Rickenbacker circa 1964 when, as a young lad, noticed the guitar John Lennon was playing looked like no other. I was hooked. I started to realize too, that Rics did not sound like the others.
There's so much to like and respect about Rickenbacker, the guitar, the company and the family that's passed down ownership. Thanks for highlighting that.
I've had a number of events that have further piqued my Ric interest; one was the chance to buy a 360 in a case some 40 years ago and did not, reading an LA Times article about the company and the wait to get a guitar, and a few years ago, I showed up at Ric's Santa Ana facility thinking I could get a tour or at least check out the walls with guitars and history. I was locked out and nicely told to check a dealer. Sorry for the long rant! Thanks again!
I thought I'd seen most of your videos but this popped up in my recommendations. Excellent overview of the versatility of Ric's. I've owned two, a Rickenbacker 350- a long scale version of the John Lennon 325 short scale guitar, and I had a 4003 Bass in Jetglo.
I loved the 350 for rhythm stuff and up to maybe the 7th fret riffs. Even though it was a 'regular' scale 24 ¾", it still felt a bit cramped as you moved up the neck. We all know how iconic the 4003 bass is, I still kick myself for selling both of them but I had literally dozens of guitars and needed some bread so since Ric's do hold their value extremely well I was able to get more than what I paid for out if them. Still, I miss them. It's been probably 10 years since I had one
and I'm definitely itching to get another. Those 600 series Ric's are very cool and because they're not immediately recognized as a "Beatles guitar" you can make it your own pretty easily I assume. Great video brother...
I bought a Rickenbacker 360/12 21 years ago. I don’t play it as much as some of my other guitars, but it is a useful instrument!
I bought my 2012 Rickenbacker 620 White ( I do not know why they call my model "White because it is natural color wood) guitar in March and I no longer, as of now, play my Fender Tele, Strat, or my Epiphone ES 335 or Les Paul!! I am absolutely in love with the sound, and it is the same as yours, just looks different. I bought it from Reverb used and it was listed as excellent, and it is!
I had a 330. Loved the sounds and the way it looked. Hated the neck. Way too thin. It felt very cramped. I eventually sold it.
Thanks for this - helpful to see the amp settings. I have a 330 and a super reverb, and have been annoyed that it lacks the rickenbacker sound - turns out I needed to crank the mids - all of a sudden, there's the sound I've been after!
I owned a Ric 330 six string in the 80s loved it but had to sell it in the 90s such are the finances of a musician. I now own a 330 Ric 12 string. Used for studio work you can't beat the beautiful jangle of a ric 12 string. I would love to buy another Ric 6 string may be one day when my wife is in a good mood. My all time favourite and work horse is a 56 Custom Shop Strat. I have owned a Custom Shop gold top Gibson with P90s in the past but it was just so dam aggressive it didn't suit my style playing. I own a 345 Gibson back to the future guitar great for jazz, blues. And a 79 Strat that I received for my 21st birthday that weighs a ton and despite what a lot of people say about 70s Strat's is a great guitar!
I own two 360's. a 12 string and a 6'er, a 325C64, and a 620 Deluxe. Love 'em all!
Nice guitar and more versatile than they're given credit for; I still think a Strat has all the bases covered, but, what a Ric does no other guitar can do. I owned a 330 Fireglo for a while and really enjoyed playing it while I had it - struggled a bit with lead playing towards the top-end of the fretboard with notes slightly choking off, but, other than that it was as versatile as my 81' Les Paul Deluxe and 79' American Strat - thanks for uploading.

I am so forever thankful that I was able to get my two Rickenbacker basses.
You can definitely do anything on it. I've been looking for one for a while, to use in my band. We play mostly dream-pop/shoegaze and the gain on them sounds so good.
I bought my 330 12 for use in a dream pop/shoegaze style, influenced by bands like Lush.
I have one as my main guitar. it's definitely the most comfortable for me

Rickenbacker guitars are absolutely amazing , they live up to all the hype plus more, I fell in love with them about 25 yrs ago while listening & watching Elliott Smith with Heat Miser , Elliott was playing a Jetglo 360 , I became obsessed with getting that same guitar , and by gosh by golly I did ! and I love it , it is like no other guitar I own , I recommend them to other players looking for a different sound , people need to get over the price point , Ricks are not that expensive really , people are just CHEAP ! You get what you pay for in this world .ThanX !

Own a 620…and all the other iconic guitars as well at this point in life. Great guitar.
I bought a Ric 625 back in early 1966. Essentially the same guitar, but it had a tremolo and the Ric-O-Sound stereo output. I loved mine and kick myself for having sold it in 1972.
I’ve owned a couple of Ricks. (not at the same time!) In 1971, I was in a country/rock band and needed more twang than my ‘67 Gibson SG could produce. Couldn’t find a Tele for a price I could afford-I was a college student living on a tight budget-and a friend of mine sold me his ‘67 Rickenbacker 450 for $150. I couldn’t get along with that guitar at all. It didn’t twang; it was bright and thin. The body was tiny; felt like a toy, and the bridge was recessed into the pickguard so that the strings were maybe a quarter-inch off the top. I’ve always done a lot of hybrid pick-and-finger stuff, but I couldn’t on that guitar, no room to get the fingers under the strings! I didn’t keep it very long, and it wasn’t until 1990 that I found a ‘72 381, which I’d wanted one of ever since I saw the late-60’s Rickenbacker calalog, which showed a Mapleglo one. Mine was Jetglo, looked great but needed some work. A previous owner had literally taken a hammer to the bridge to move it back so it would intonate with .008”-gauge strings. Bent all four of the bridge mounting screws. Rickenbacker wouldn’t sell me just the screws, so I had to get a whole new bridge. It had the Hi-Gain pickups, which sounded too dark on that big hollow body, so I got a set of Toasters, and that helped, but not enough. Sure was a pretty guitar, but I wasn’t playing it much, so I sold it on. I’ve since tried one of the modern 381 reissues-didn’t buy it as by then the price was $5000-but it was much better than my old one. Vintage is not necessarily better, kids! BTW, that 620 in the video sounds great, especially through the Vox amp. I’m convinced that Rickenbacker pickups and Vox amps are a match made in heaven. Unfortunately, I haven’t owned a Vox amp since 1967-I got a Cambridge Reverb in ‘66. Wish I still had it!
Finally got a RIC at 70 yrs old, i love it. Wanted one from the first time i heard the byrds!
I’ve actually bought a Carl Wilson Rick 12 and the seller reneged on the sale. I also own a 1967 Gibson ES 335/12 Orange label with do inlays.
Rickenbacker also took out the real jangle by remove the .00047 cap between the toggle switch and added a jumper wire.
Prolly the best Rickenbacker demo I've seen, you can actually play your instrument. It annoys me a bit to see guys with a guitar collection in the price range of north of $10,000+ that have sloppy technique, no fretboard understanding, and fret buzzing etc. Maybe as much as the pronunciation of RIckenbahker annoys you lol. Nice demonstration of the versatility of the 620, I ordered one today! Also I think the price is lower than a LOT of standard Gibsons and about even with Fender American made standards, and from a company with arguably higher build standards.

@@JackFossett I order mine in Jetglo. I've wanted that guitar for maybe 10 years now and finally decided it was time to pull the trigger. I had a 4003 bass in Mapleglo a few years ago but sold it buy a Splawn 112 combo amp, and every time I think I regret it I just look over at that beautiful Splawn and realize I made the right choice (for a guitarist that is a bassist wannabe anyway).
They absolutely do not have higher build standards. They are fine with a lot being wrong with their guitars from the factory, because they know people will pay for their guitars which for some reason have a sort of “mythical” status. I did fall in love with a 620 the other day though.
I'm one of those rare people. Back in the 80s I owned a 1976 320. White. Very rare guitar, triple pickups. And then in the late '80s early 90s I owned a 1980 360 12 string maple glow. I loved that guitar. Actually. I loved them both . I should have never sold them! Now I want a walnut 360 12 string.
The first person that comes to mind that uses Ricks is Laura Jane Grace from Against Me. Paul Weller from The Jam too. Such a shame they don’t do like a Fender Mexican line, because I’d love to give a Rick a try just from those two names alone.
Yeah that’s the whole struggle - I like that they don’t want to compromise, but it definitely limits their market big time.
@@JackFossett I feel like if they did what Fender does (maybe to a lesser extent), then they’d sell a lot of guitars. Ricks look really cool, and there is nothing else like them.

No one really “needs” anything but they’re always nice to have. I’ve had three of them in total and still own a 12 string. I had a 1997 SPC reissue 6 string that I sold many years ago that I wish I hadn’t.

I own the exact guitar in this video (model and colour). I bought it 15 years ago and it was my first high end or US built guitar. Since then I’ve owned several Fenders, Gibsons, a PRS and a Gretsch etc. and while I have kept this guitar it’s not one I play that often. In my opinion, if you already own Strats, Teles etc there’s no particular reason to own a six string Rickenbacker unless you just really like the look of a particular one, as the sound and character just isn’t distinct or useful enough to justify a purchase on that alone. A 12 string Rickenbacker is a different thing entirely, because that’s a very unique sound that’s not easily replicated by any other guitar and so I think that is a useful addition for a player with all the other bases covered already in their collection (eg les paul, strat, tele, jazzmaster, es335, something with p90s and an acoustic). As you say, they are immaculately made guitars, they are similarly priced to say Gibsons but have historically had better QC, so not that expensive. FWIW in 2008 I paid the equivalent of $1,175 for my 620, new.
I had preconceived notions about Ric basses, until I played one in a jam session. Boy was I wrong. Now I own one and it’s my number 1!
Roger McGuinn of the Byrds was introduced by George Harrison to the Ric 12. McGuinn played lead with the Ric 12 on "8 Miles High" for example. Thanks for a really good video. You were able to produce the jangle nicely. I love Rics, and my goal is still a Lennon 325C64.

Have owned 2 Ricky basses including the one I have now, a 4003SW, Nothing looks plays or feels like one and once you get used to it they are wonderful, not cheap though, great demo.
Yes, you do need a Rickenbacker. A Rickenbacker 330 has been my main guitar for 31 years. Rickenbackers, like all guitars, all have their own idiosyncracies, but like all other guitars, can be used for all genres and all styles of playing. I'm a big fan of both the Hi-Gain pickups (shown and heard in the 620, here) and the humbucking pickups in Rickenbacker guitars (as in the 650 Dakota I used to own, as well), but I can live with the Vintage pickups, too (as in the 325V59 that I wish I had actually bought when I demoed it years ago). I will say, though, that I am definitely in the "modern/alternative indie rock camp", rather than the "Beatles/Byrds/Petty" camp, and I don't play a Vox amp, I play a Mesa/Boogie.
I’m interested in a 330, how would you describe the feel of the guitar vs say a fender or Gibson? I think the fret spacing makes it difficult for lead work? I’d use it for rhythm though. Appreciate your thoughts!
Do I need a Rickenbacker? YES! Can I afford one? No 😞. I've been borrowing my brother in law's 350 SH which he's owned since 1992. He bought it new for a song ($1000) as it sold unsold since 1989 in the store(it's a limited model, he has #100 of 250 total production from 1989-90). It's current value based on both inherent rarity, and rarity when they come up for sale is now 10x what he paid for it! It's fantastic playing and sounding guitar and like you said, definitely not a one trick pony!

A friend has a Rick Guitar. Great sound, but tough to keep in tune, but Gibsons can be that way too. I did own a 4003 Bass at one time. Like you, I have started really loving Gretsch Guitars.
My 620 stays in tune just as well as my telecaster
I have a Ric 660-12, it’s really really beautiful, in playing, sounding (with Janglebox) and build quality. Great sustain with that through body neck.

Your pronunciation is correct (at least according to the company). Adolf Rickenbacher changed his name and the company's name after he moved from Switzerland to the US, to capitalize on the popularity of his distant cousin, America's top Flying Ace Eddie Rickenbacker. So originally it was pronounced the other way, but with the change from 'h' to 'k' it became as you said.
That said, I speak some German, and I'd be willing to bet that if you went to Switzerland and said it that way, they'd look at you funny! That's just not how they pronounce the 'a' sound. It's an Americanization. But it's how the company wants us to pronounce it.
If you watch the UA-cam review for the Rickenbacker 620 (at Soundland GmbH), you'll notice that the Germans pronounce it as Rickenbacker.

My Babe bought me Rickenbacker 325 for Xmas 2021 I had les Paul’s great axe, I Had Fenders Good guitars PRS And Parkers Nothing I have played can compare to the action on my Rickenbacker just lay you fingers she rings out. I’m an acoustic player own guild f240E and, the Rick is the most responsive rythem instrument I have played mine you if you mess up you WILL hear it It’s made for precision playing players 3/4 scale with your 5th fret is the Rick 7th fret awesome
I have a 360-12 String in Mapleglo. I found that I look for it when I want a new sound when I hit a plateau with my other guitars. That being said, I use it pretty often these days. I did get a good deal on it (I put it used) and the price was too good to pass up. I tend to find music whenever I play that guitar, so I try to reserve using it for special occasions. I tend not to use it for everyday jam sessions.
Ya know I'd love a 12, but they are pricey for something I wouldn't use all the time. Like you said, its kind of a special instance guitar. But maybe I'd find the same thing and use it more often.
I play in a band that does lots of 60s, Beatles, Byrds Hollies etc. 12 string.I was using my very cool Dan Electro Bourzouki 12. That was until a friend lent me his 360 12. Once I got that Rick sound I had to get my own A 2015 Fireglo 360 12 with toaster pickups for $2400. Nothing like it for that 12 sound with the reverse strings on the low end.
The cost is the only thing that ever stopped me. I did end up finding a circa 1970 Harmony that is generally styled after a Rickenbacker and has nice DeArmond gold foil pickups, and that will probably be as close as I ever get.

@@dan9521 OTOH, open a savings account at your local credit union (I know interest on savings accounts SUCK, but that's not the point) - every payday take $20, $30 ... whatever you can scrape together and put it in that account. Sooner than you think, you'll have enough set aside to be able to buy the guitar you want.
