As a Suffolk lad, its always a pleasure to find broadside on tap although its a very different beer to the bottled version.
I do prefer the bottled Broadside to king goblin overall.
And mirroring some of the other comments on here ive also started moving away from craft too.
I'd quite happily save the money and grab a bottle of one of these, tribute, landlord etc...

100% agree. Broadside is a nice beer (for supermarket ales). Great to see some proper ales get airtime!

Pity that that draught version is so much weaker to avoid the high price of duty.

The Broadside sounds like a masterpiece. I imagine some sort of sugar, like invert, is in the recipe which is standard for a lot of old school British beer. Wish i could get Adnams in the US!

Southwold in Norfolk!1? Come on Simon - Suffolk beer drinkers will be most put out! A bit like saying Brains are Newport brewers…….LoL. I really enjoyed your review as ever but I am always a bit sceptical that these pasteurised, bottled strong brews ever really give you the flavour profile you would get from the draft equivalent. But Adnams are a great, regional brewer and ought to be able to knock Marston’s into touch, who lost their identity long ago and sadly sold their brewing arm out to Carlsberg Group in 2020. Sounds like Adnams is the one to go for here.

Hi, Simon. Great review, as always. With the so-called ‘craft beer revolution’ and all the multi coloured cans taking up the supermarket shelf space, I do sometimes feel that our great, British ales are overlooked. Perhaps they’re not ‘trendy’ enough. I enjoy the likes of Northern Monk and Beavertown, yet their marketing puts me off at times. Give me an honest, British beer: Shepherd Neame, Badger, etc. Cheers!

Some of the older, independent breweries (Elgoods, St Austell, Fullers) are the very definition of craft beer, it’s just not what people want to drink at the moment.
Once I got through the NEIPA craze I started seeking out the likes of Adnams broadside, St Austell Proper Job and you see the quality is right there

I just had a drink-a-long with u there mate. Was a great way to watch the channel and fascinating to hear your take on the nose and the taste of the beer as you drink them yourself. The liquorice comment was spot on after a slurp of Broadside.

This is a great review. A English strong ale comparison. Rich and malty. More interesting than the usual IPA comparison.

Both these beers available right now in the Morrisons mix and match deal - any 4 pints for £7. I regularly buy King Goblin, but haven't had the Broadside for a while, so inspired by this video I picked up two of each today!

Hi Simon, I came across your channel last year and I'd just like to thank you for your excellent and most importantly entertaining beer reviews. I didn't realise until this one just how long you'd been plugging away at this so it's good to see it paying off with the amount of well deserved views and subscribers you now have. (Virtual Stoned Crow cheers with my Chameleonic.. just what I happen to have in my hand atm).. keep up the good work mate! ❤

Innes & Gunn Rum Finish in 770ml (approx) bottles was my go to beer, about a decade ago. Then they abruptly stopped producing this bottle size and simultaneously they became very hard to find here in Northern Ireland. This was before they got into the supermarkets. Eventually, after some years in a beer wilderness, I discovered King Goblin and all was again right in the universe ;) I tried the various Adnams beers and found them all a bit rough on the palette. Whereas King Goblin is much more 'drinkable'. I must give Adnams another try. Since so much time has passed.
FYI Yes Tesco is still doing the 4 for £6.50 deal on King Goblin. Which used to be 4 for £6.00
However Asda are offering a better deal at 4 for the price of 3, which works out about 10p cheaper per bottle ;)
(this was calculated on the old Tesco deal)

Haven't had Broadside in years but I picked up some King Goblin for my girlfriends birthday. £6.50 for four 500ml bottles in Tesco. Great stuff! I should add that she does like Hobgoblin beers in general, I wasn't buying it just for me!

Adnams is one of my go to brewers. They also import Bitburger and sell it cheaper than other online bottle shops. Not tried the Broadside as its a bit on the strong side of me. But the Southwold Bitter is a standard for me in the colder months.

I regularly order the 500 ml Bitburger cans from Adnams and your right they are decently priced as are the Broadside mini kegs which is a lovely drop.

Hi thanks for a great review
I prefer the look of the Adams but the taste for me goes to the king goblin. Both exceeding great ales. And hats of to Adams for remaining independent.
    Keep up the good work

Would love to go to U. K. and have cask ale, it's on the bucket list, I have had Hobgoblin, I don't know if they export King Goblin to the states or in particular Wisconsin where I live but next time out to my local bottle shop, I will ask about it. There is a place near me which has a great import section filled with U. K., European & world beers. They both look refreshing. Cheers!

Great pair-up Simon, I like both of these but haven`t had the Broadside in a long time so I must look out for it. I used to buy Adnams bitter in the cans years ago & it was my go-to pint for some years then I couldn`t get it, I did try the bottle version which wasn`t as good so I went to IPA`s instead, but I miss Southwold Suffolk bitter.....it was quality nectar.

As I can no longer get fullers London pride I’ve brought a 24 can pack of abbot ale it’s ok but certainly the old peculiar is certainly the winner

The Adnams Broadside is $7.50 (4 GBP) in Australia. A shame that beer is so overtaxed in this country. Fair enough that we import it, but it's still pretty expensive.

when king goblin first got released it was cracking, then marstons bought them and king goblin became what hobgoblin used to be and hobgoblin just got ruined. Where Broadside however has remained pretty much how it has been for years. both on cask which is weaker and in the bottle. used to buy broadside every week. will not buy king goblin now though because i remeber how it was before marstons ruined it. broadside wins hands down for me simon. cheers.

Adnams is, as you say, producing English wines, gins and also importing very good wines. If that's what it takes to stay independent (and I am also an avid wine drinker of quality wines too) then I'm tipping my hat to them.
