Happy to find a gardener who’s in the Southern Hemisphere and in a cold part of the country. Unlike a certain UA-camr in southern Queensland, which is just cheating! Yes I mean you Mark @ Self Sufficient Me! 😜 I will have a go at a potato tower, thanks for the video.
LOL Yeah he can grow stuff all the time 😊 I'm in Melbourne so way closer to Tassie than QLD. Me too on the tower but mine will be outside next month on top of a bed that has bad soil.
@@petermaguire6280 Well you are right. I've only been to QLD in Summer and Autumn. Except for Brisbane where my niece lived for some time but that's a pretty sheltered area I think. We were not knocking Mark. I think he's a legend but things do grow quicker in that Northern sunshine 😊
John thanks for this as I am going to try this up here in Brisbane so lets see- I bought my potato starts from Tassie so cross your fingers for me. Cheers Denise- Brisbane
Use a similar system for strawberries, but with welded wire mesh. Much stronger & stackable. Just stack extra layers ontop & tie the posts to the extra layer with jute or garden string. Currently have 3 layers, each 45cm tall. Was going to do a 4th, but posts weren't high enough, 😊.
You had me worried I could see what I thought smoke coming from the top of the tower then got me worried then at the very end you picked the hose up and moved it to the new one....ha ha
Great idea John. I have planted my spuds in a 4'x4'x4' raised garden in Mollymook NSW 3 weeks ago but may also try one of these towers. Cheers and I do enjoy and look forward to your videos.
Nice one mate, I'll be trying this in Melbourne in a few weeks, but outside on top of a garden bed with poor soil. I usually only plant potatoes where I can't grow other things as they are quite inexpensive to buy. I'll be trying some Pontiacs and Kipfler. Let's hope it works out well for us 😊
Hey John thanks for the video. I think I will try one of these with my delicious kipfler seeds potatoes that just arrived. Last year i tried growing in a raised Vegtrug bed in Melb, but with six plants I harvested less than 500g of potatoes. Not much grew in any of my three beds except some spring onions. Even the zucchini never had a male flower bloom. Any thoughts on what might be wrong? Soil was always damp but not wet. It was a soil/compost 50/50 mix from Bunnings in bags. Maybe bad soil?
I am hoping it won't be a big problem...our fence keeps numbers low and regular control is needed for compost/greenhouse anyway to keep numbers at minimum.
Sir, birds around the world r envious of your nest building! And thats a sweet potato tower
Thank you. I always enjoy your videos.
Thanks John
I will try this outdoors in spring in our small space launceston garden.
Always look forward to and enjoy your videos.

How the he'll is it cheating, he lives there and grows what he can
@@petermaguire6280 Have you ever heard of humor? We were not serious He is a great source of information. And he does look a bit like Russel Crowe 😊
You obviously have not been to Kingaroy or Rocky in winter to see the frosts

Thanks for the encouragement!

Nice 👍

Same!! I thought it was some new method that involved charring the straw from the inside!

Potatoes are not as cheap as they used to be.
As always your videos are so interesting, entertaining, and informative. Question….will you be doing a video update on the avocado trees?
Thanks for the encouragement. May do a video (or include then in a video) at the end of winter.
Thats exciting!! Im going to build a potatoe tower now..Its my kids favourite thing to grow.Thankyou!😊

Did the top green stem and leaves sprout out through the sides of the tower?

It was the worst, coldest, most miserable summer ever! Nobody grew anything worth eating in Melb last year. Let’s hope next summer is better.
you mentioned you also tried growing in just the hay, how did that work out for yield, and what 'process did you use?
Didn't go well - ua-cam.com/video/sTChQEt7DxA/v-deo.html
How are you planning to keep the rodents out?

Oh no. Will rodents eat raw potatoes? Sigh. Thx for the warning.
