I think we have very similar taste. I really liked the cleverness and intricacy of Looking Glass Sound, and loved the originality of the concept of The Appeal. I've read all of Janice Hallett's books and The Appeal is still my favourite, but I love the mixed media format and working out the truth when somebody says one thing to one person and something different to another. I really liked the Christmas Appeal although it leaned more heavily into humour and farce (as is right for a pantomime) before getting to the reveal of the crime. I'll definitely check out True Crime Story - it sounds great. I love the idea of making notes or maybe even setting up an incident room to work out what's going on. I agree that the right book at the right time is really important for 5* reads. I love sci-fi, but Project Hail Mary was perhaps the right book at the wrong time, for me, and the convenience of some of the events and the humour grated a little. I definitely want to read Migrations and Penpal, and you sold me on At Home with the Horrors in another video. Some of my favourite mystery-thrillers from 2023 are Don't Believe It by Charlie Donlea, Murder in the Family by Cara Hunter and The Echo Man by Sam Holland. Have great New Year!
yes i agree we have similar taste in books! i think you would really enjoy true crime story in that case. its definitely the kind of book i can imagine setting up an evidence board for with string connecting everything if you wanted to! i thought i would find the humour in project hail mary a bit cringy but i think the audiobook really helped with the right delivery if that makes sense. you’ll have to let me know what you think when you read them. i’ll definitely check out some of your favourites, murder in the family was a dnf for me unfortunately because it is exactly what i usually love!! but i’ll definitely try the other two. 🥰 i hope you’ve had a lovely holiday season and wishing you a fab new year!
i added Penance and My Dark Vanessa to my 2024 tbr because of you! 🙌🏻 i also absolutely loved Migrations when i read it last year. it’s so memorable and i still think about it! edited to add that i also loved At Home with the Horrors! the author has a new scifi horror book out that i need to read!
