Being a HUGE Beasties fan, since the Cooky Puss days; I went to Harmony House, and bought Paul’s Boutique, the day it was released. To say I was blown away, is an understatement. I wasn’t expecting another Licensed To Ill, because that shit can’t be topped. So when I heard the sound of Paul’s Boutique, it was exactly what I was looking for from (the) Beastie Boys. There is not one bad song on the entire album. It was in heavy rotation amongst my group of friends, and was HIGHLY respected as being one of the best albums ever made. The samples and references in the lyrics also spoke to what a lot of us were into at the time, or what we knew and heard growing up in Detroit, in the 70s & 80s. Paul’s Boutique is a musical masterpiece.

I disagree “rap album “ I think about lyrics. Far as a the best produced or imagination the dust brothers are fire. I put the music leaning towards a Dj Shadow feel.

I listened to it for the first time in maybe 15 years the other day. It's still so fresh and brilliant.

My favorite album of all time. I bought it the day it came out at Waterloo Records in Austin, and probably spent the next 4 months straight learning all the words. It was epic, and continues to be a go to. I'm the same age as the Beasties so when they grew and changed between 1986 and 1989...well, so did I b/c that is a long time when you're a teenager. So the transition was exactly what I wanted and needed, just like they were saying they needed change as well. Very cool to learn a lot of the backstory, so thank you for filling in the deets.

THIS ALBUM WAS GIVEN TO ME AS A GIFT FROM A FRIEND WHEN I WAS 12 YEARS OLD... ON CASSETTE....HIS DAD WAS WORKING FOR CAPITOL RECORDS CANADA AT THE TIME...TO MY UNDERSTANDING HE WAS A DISTRIBUTOR......AND HAD A SERIOUS STASH OF CAPITOL RECORDS RELEASES IN HIS BASEMENT...TONS OF TAPES MOSTLY....AND SO MY FRIEND ASKED ME IF I WANTED ANY....SO I PICKED 3 THAT CAUGHT MY EYE..... THE FIRST WAS PAUL'S BOUTIQUE, THE YELLOW SHELL! ...THE NEXT WAS M.C. HAMMER... THE ONE WITH "YOU CAN'T TOUCH THIS" ....AND THE 3RD WAS "THE U-KREW"...THOSE WERE THE ONLY RAP RECORDS THAT I COULD FIND IN ALL THAT STASH! SO THAT'S WHAT I CHOSE....LITTLE DID I KNOW AT THE TIME THAT ONE OF MY SELECTIONS WOULD BECOME ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS IN THE HISTORY OF RECORDED MUSIC...AMAZING.

The Love American Style EP on red, white and blue cassette as well as the actual full length Paul’s Boutique album ruled our stereos for the entire spring and summer of ‘89. Paul’s Boutique is quite possibly the GREATEST hip hop album.

I'll admit that when I was a kid and heard Paul's Boutique, I didn't get it. Didn't help that the tape was loaned to us by a friend who warned us in advance that it wasn't great. We didn't understand it back then because that kind of hip hop didn't exist yet. The DBs and the Beasties created it in front of our eyes. When you go back and hear it later, it's like "Woah!" They're basically the Jimis Hendrixes of rap.

Coming from someone that was listening to license when it first came out at around 11-12 years old, I get it. PB didn’t hit home for me and my friends till years later. It was just too far ahead of our puny brains.

@@butterblood Funny. I was the opposite. I never liked (still don't) License to ill. Fight for your right..., no sleep.... I just don't like them. Paul's Boutique I KINDA liked. But the beasties didn't click with me until Ill Communication to be honest. But yeah, back then I liked Paul's boutique much more than License...

When the Boys first arrived on the scene, I didn’t care for them.
I thought they were spoiled, obnoxious New York kid’s trying to play real artist or Musicians.
Over the course of time all three members matured into thoughtful and intelligent young men.
Another reason for my original distaste of the Beastie boys is I was a good ten years older than them and this new Genre of Rap music was foreign to me and most of my Southern friends.
These men turned into great humanitarians and it was such a loss when Adam Yauch “MCA” died of cancer.
Adam and Mike D have continued to work together to protect their legacy of all three members.
They all had such a close bond and it’s great to see both Mike and Adam remain friends and collaborate when possible.

Paul's Boutique was a big part of the soundtrack to my mispent youth in smalltown Canada and we were just dirtbag skaters. Had no clue many didnt know what to make of it, we were in smalltown canada after all so we didn't know much of anything.
