Thanks very much for this. I’m Leeds born and bred. Lived here for nearly 70 years and never before heard of Steander or Timble Beck. Although I knew it ran underground I assumed it was called Meanwood Beck all the way to the river.

I still think of Leeds as my home town even though I lived there for only 16 years. I have never heard of Steander until today. Fascinating!

Lived here most of my life (Leeds/ Dewsbury) and still didn't know about Steander! Always wondered about the ghost writing on those buildings going towards South Accommodation Road and now I know. Brilliant stuff is history

Very interesting video it's great how you highlight and keep the lost districts alive. Through researching my family history I also know the area as Ste ander. My Crossley family lived there and also on Fearns Island, East Street and on a small almost impossible to find yard called Barkers yard which was on the junction of Crownpoint Road and East Street

Thanks Yvonne. I love finding out about these old areas of Leeds. I tried to discover the accurate pronunciation, but couldn't find agreement when I was making this video. Your family come from a very interesting corner of the city.

I have lived in Leeds for nearly 60 years and recently retired from the university as an academic but had seen the district name in old papers etc. I also remember some of the old buildings in the 60s.
I have always viewed Leeds as hometown and very proud of the city I came to as a young primary school kid.

I worked in G H Batty's brushworks on East Street in 1981-2. It was still in business in the mid 9o's but I don't know when it closed. You can see it on the aerial photograph at 5 minutes 30. It is just to the right of Leeds Dam and the Roberts Mart building is to its right. The apartment block that stands in its place is called Trinity One - probably because the factory was called Trinity Brush Works.

Timble beck!! when i was a youngster in the fifties and atending elleby lane school we used to wander into leeds at the bottom of east street half buried in the ground alongside the air canal were gearwheels which looked like part of a lockgates, or sluice ore even some sort of water wheel driven system. Well i now have some understanding of the reason for this construction as a youngster i used to puzzle about this arrangement.Ive been left leeds now since 1968 and the place is unrecognisable to me!!

My Grt Grandfather was born by Very near to the beck in the year 1882, he and my Grt Grandmother would reminisce about the area shortly before their death. They both would pronounce the area as I outlined to you. Kindest regards
