  • I've had a couple of requests to do an update video on this tree. Unfortunately the update of the tree in the first video was that it died about a week after posting the orginal video. However the new tree in this update was purchased about a couple of days after posting the first one. I have had this palm for about 6-7 months now and it has done really well for me. I learned several different things about this tree in these past couple of months, so be sure to watch the entire update video to learn how to not only care for this impossible tree but also how to keep it thriving! They do have specific requiremnts that some greener growers might not yet know about. As always, don't forget to Plant Prudently!

    Hello there! I am a coconut fan.
    I also grow my coconut palms in a pot because it is very cold in the winter of the netherlands. It is already 6 years old and huge.
    Almost 3 meters high. It has a trunk, but coconuts are not going to come very soon as the plant is a tall variëty. I think yours is a dwarf, because of the thin nerfs of the leaves(it can get about 7 meters high), and the underpart is not round it can fruit much earlier. I have had also a dwarf, but it died from too much rain outside.(stemrot) now my big one is left.
    It was almost dying of sunburn, spidermite, and the half of the pot dried out (if you water much it can also happen.) Now it gets green again. I have experience with this plant.
    I want to give some tips:
    Your palm has signs of too much water. In the tropics it also rains too much sometimes, so the trees suffer a bit. The black circles on the leaves are a sign.
    Light Brown leaves are just growth
    Of the palm. Its normal, but if its in many leaves it could be too dry air.
    To solve that spray the leaves with water frequently. But this plant usually will get resistant to drought after some time.
    Repot it! This gives miracles to all plants! Once repotted, wait untill the roots com out the drainage holes. before repotting it again.
    NPK 6.4.6 is perfect for coconut trees. This is mostly palm tree fertilizer, or grass fertilizer.
    Soil: compost(or composted coconut fibre.) mixed with sand. Works well.
    Yellow leaves are a sign of not enough fertilizer. mostly iron!. It also happens if your leaves are dying.
    If your leaves are not getting more yellow (a fronture of yellow an green means your plant stops dying.)
    Dcm organic liquid palm fertilizer is a good one for coconut trees.
    I shouldn't cut of damaged leaves, because that makes the plant unhealthier. The more leaves you cut off, the smaller the trunk will get later on. Look at the trunk by most plants, and the smaller parts were the time a plant had it difficult.
    The plant has to get less water in winter, this can damage the roots. It does get a rest period, because there isn't enough sunlight an not very warm in winter.
    Give it also less to no fertilizer in winter as this can damage the roots.
    Please, i would like it to know how it's going or if it's dying so please send mails to: brandon.sikkink@gmail.com
    Sorry for the long story...🙂

      I thought it was almost impossible to grow coconut palms I've tried several times and in the end spider mites always took over and finally killed the palms despite spraying them they always came back . Seems they survived in the part of the leaves which is folded where the spray can't reach .

      @@blairmarriott3737 yes, spidermite was a big problem for me too, but there is only one good solution inside in winter: treat the whole plant with methylated spirits and green soap or another treatment. You need to clean every part of the leaf, because they hide themselves really good. Another good solution can be putting it outside. your palm will grow stronger, and the spidermites will search another plant, get eaten by other insects, or get washed away by the rain. They like dry air, so they hate it outside.

      @blairmarriott3737 3 роки тому +1

      @Kokos Legend thanks for your reply. When you say treat with meths for spider mite do you mean spray the plant with it ? Also when I had mine I kept them at no lower than 20c . What temperatures do you keep yours at ? I've grown regular green coconut palms that are sold in supermarkets and I've tried growing Dwarf golden Malayan all were killed by spider mite in the end .

    • @kokoslegend4850
      @kokoslegend4850 4 роки тому

      @@miniatures1 it is a coconut palm, so it can get coconuts for sure, but it requires a lot of sunlight and a very big pot. Also your house should be a lot of meters high (3 (minimum) or 4 meters ). If you have this, i think you can grow coconuts at home.

    My first died from using miracle grow and lack of light. My current is over 8 feet tall and a success that will be with me my entire life. They need full sun at this stage you want to go to up to a MUCH larger pot soon or it will suffer the brown death. Your potting mix SHOULDNT be sand but peat. Lots of indoor coconuts in my area some 20+ years old.

      Yes I would say I agree with most everything you said. I have never once had a problem using miracle grow. It's not my favorite substrate to use but based on my location it is more often than not it is the easiest to obtain. Most of the time when I hear someone say that they've lost a plant to ferterlizer its been because they've planted their plant with miracle grow and then gone back and fed it a month or two later, thereby burning the plant out. I'm not saying this is what you did but I've seen it happen so many times. As for the lights, I've gotten mine under my led grow lights and he's never been happier. Thank you so much for telling me about the larger pot, I had no idea. He's got one or two smaller brown leaves but I'm sure that is where they are coming from. As for the sand I've been told by a handful of growers that sand best matches what the trees get in nature so that would be the best and then the other handful of growers I know say it's better for aeration/drainage if you use peat. Mine seems to be happy with what I have done for it so far. P.S. Goonies never say die!

    I’ve seen a lot of videos on UA-cam where the growers recommend (roughly) a 12-4-12 fertilizer or where the first number (Nitrogen) is very close to the last number (potassium). Along with magnesium, calcium, surfer, iron. Edit; Epson salt is magnesium sulfate

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 роки тому

      That's interesting. Have you tried it or had any success with it? Sounds like it should be effective. I know I use a lot of epsom salt with my fruit trees, my roses and various other plants indoors too. I know a lot of my fruit trees love magnesium, calcium, and iron. Some sulfur if they need it during the dormancy period helps at times. I haven't done a whole lot of work with different palms. I've had three in the past 4 or five years.

      Give enough water for the soil to stay moist or a little on the wet side is also fine, but don't give the 100% maximum ( the maximum amount of water the soil can hold with dranage holes) This can cause root rot but doesn't need to. If black spots appear, you are overwatering. In the winter you have to give less water, but never let the soil dry out. Grass or palm tree fertilizer is great. Check out DCM liquid palm fertilizer. N.P.K 6.4.6 is great. That means 6 parts nitrogen, 4 parts phosphorous and 6 parts kalium. Questions are always welcome! I also have a Coconut palm tree/plants channel.
