There are six TÜV organizations in Germany. These organizations are responsible for monitoring vehicles, devices and products and checking whether they meet the minimum technical standards.
The TÜV organizations offer a variety of services, such as carrying out general inspections, driving tests, accompanying new registrations and the safe networking of vehicles and infrastructure on the road and rail.
There are also a variety of penalties that apply if you miss the MOT. The penalties vary depending on the length of time the MOT was missed. For example, there is a fine of €15 if the MOT has been missed for more than 2 months, and a fine of €60 and a point in Flensburg if the MOT has been missed for more than 8 months.
If the MOT has expired for more than eight months, not only can a fine be imposed, but the vehicle can even be immobilized. However, there are exceptions for very young (new) vehicles that only have to undergo a general inspection after the first 3 years (after that every 2 years). In this case, the vehicle cannot be immobilized before then.
There are also cases in which the vehicle is immobilized if it is unsafe to drive. The TÜV inspector can immobilize the vehicle if he determines that it is unsafe to drive. In this case, the vehicle can no longer be used on roads.
It is important to note that decommissioning a vehicle does not automatically mean that it can no longer be repaired or put back into service. There are ways to bring a decommissioned vehicle back into service, but this usually requires an inspection and repair of the defects.
Overall, it is important to carry out regular MOTs to ensure that the vehicle is roadworthy. Once the MOT has expired, the vehicle should no longer be used on roads to ensure that road safety is not compromised.
