  • Day one in Ohio was preeetty strange. I wish I would have spent more time on the water filming but unfortunately I was limited on time. Thanks for watching and I hope you guys enjoyed yet another "fire" Jon B. vlog. As always...keep fishing, never stop!

    Yesterday I caught my first three smallmouth bass on a drop shot with a yum finesse worm and a finesse jerk bait but only landed two of them. Of course I lost the biggest one and it was a three pound smallmouth. Although now I understand all the fuss about smallmouth fishing. Jon B. thanks for the motivation to keep fishing and never stop

    Jon, one thing to encourage you on with your fly fishing: you have already figured out how to lay down a back cast. In other words you can fish "backwards." Very useful for difficult spots. Keep up the good work.

    Jonny boy when you hook up with a bass on a fly rod u strip the line in with your hands then you reel in the line that you stripped in so you can play the with drag. It makes it easier :)

    Needing an oil change will not cause your engine to smoke. Or produce a "huge cloud of dust" You got something else going on with your engine if its smoking.

    • @jacobd373
      @jacobd373 8 років тому

      Depends on how bad he needs an oil change.

    • @aj06bolt12r
      @aj06bolt12r 8 років тому

      Incorrect. That makes no sense.

    • @aj06bolt12r
      @aj06bolt12r 8 років тому +2

      What are you even talking about? Why would needing an oil change cause an engine to overheat? Also he saw the smoke immediately after he started the engine so there was no way it had time to overheat. But even if it were overheating there would be steam coming from under the hood because of the antifreeze boiling, not out from the back of the car.

    • @BTCarpentry
      @BTCarpentry 8 років тому

      Smokey exhaust could be a number of things ranging from bad lifters to a cracked piston ring. Lets start with the oil change though. :P

    • @jacobd373
      @jacobd373 8 років тому

      +aj06bolt12r ok... if it's time to change the oil, it could also be low. low oil leads to overheating. which leads to boiling coolant and burning oil which would cause smoke. so yes needing an oil change could cause smoke. I don't want to argue with you, you're bald. sorry if I offended you.

    Jon you are a real inspiration to me. You and the rest of the Googan Squad are easily my favorite youtubers. I just want to give you some tips with fly fishing that I know of:
    You should have a lot more leader at the end of your main fly line, like 6-7 feet. I noticed in the video that the leader was really short, that's probably why the bass wouldn't bite your fly, they notice the thick bright green line in the way.
    Also, Woolly Buggers are pretty much the GOAT when it comes to flies, kinda like the senko of regular tackle, super versatile. Other killer bass flies are clouser minnows(flies made out of bucktail with a lead eye in the front), and any flies that use deer hair(muddler minnow, some poppers). Thanks for all the beast content you put out!

    Hey Jon I love your videos and as a fly fisherman I can tell you that that woolly bugger you used is either a panfish or a trout fly. Bass flies are big and bulky just like the lure. I would focus on weighted streamers for now in the 6 in range. Good luck buddy it's really cool to see you learn. P.S. Use longer leaders, you can buy tapered bass leaders or built them yourself, they should be 6 to 9 feet and taper down.

    Just some tips for the fly rod. Connecting onto your fly line should be a 6-9ft tapered leader. From the leader you will tie about a 16" section of tippet and then you will have your fly. I noticed when you had the catfish on you had the tippet tied directly to the fly line. You will increase you catches with a tapered leader added.

    Sick to see you throwing the fly man, you're learning quickly. You just need a 9-10ft leader. Either buy the tapered leaders or create your own. Im sure you have a bunch of leader material. Perfection Loop the fly line and the butt section of the leader so you can have a handshake connection(makes changing leaders way easier). If you create your own just make sure its tapered to allow the leader to roll over correctly(dont put straight 20 as leader). 40 lb mono to 30 to 20 to 15. 50 to 30 to 20. etc. i use blood knots for mono to mono. Love the vids keep it up brother

    If you have any extra spools of 30/40lb powerpro, use that as backing for your fly line. Just so the line sits better in your reel and if you do hook a bigger fish you don't have to worry about breaking your fly line. Also use about five to six feet of flouro or mono as leader so you can have a buy more stealth.

  • @Vantasner4214

    hey jon. quick question. is it ok to tie a normal snell knot with 25 lb flouro leader? also what knot should I use for braid to flouro? thanks.

    Dude you need a longer leader on that line!! I can't believe you actually caught something on that 5 inch leader! Good stuff though man fly fishing has a learning curve!

    If you want to improve your casting and hookups you should use a longer leader about 8 or 9 feet long. You can tie your own tapered leader with 12 10 and 8 lb lines using a uni to uni knot and a double box knot for the loop. Hopefully you find that use full.

    I know your a beginner and everything thing but I would go a 7 1/2' leader for bass fishing, it will allow for the fly to sink a little more due to the fact it's further away from the floating line and it will be more natural, I just use 8-12 lb flourocarbon as a leader and it works awesome!

    What part of Ohio is this? I've been to Athens before for about a month...There wasn't much around scenery wise, mainly stores/skateparks and what not. This place looks beautiful. Great video!

    Jon, you need to put backing (100 yards of 20 lbs Dacron) beneath your fly line on your reel

    Make a leader for bass and catfish out of a 2 foot strand of 30- 40 lb mono connecting to fly line and connected to the 30- 40lb get a 2 foot strand of 20 - 25 lb test and connect your line size of preferance (8- 15lb) for your tippet. This will be a inexpensive leader that will last awhile (make sure to use a blood knot or surgeons knot for line connections.) KEEP FISHING. NEVER STOP. 🎣🎣

    If you keep getting that big puff of smoke , it's more than a simple oil change. You may need a tuneup which could be new spark plugs, a throttle cleanup and throwing a bottle of fuel treatment in the fuel tank next time ur at the pump. In a bad case, you may need an injector servicing, but try the fuel treatment (*2) / plugs and throttle servicing and ur good to go.

    hey jon, you need to put backing on your new fly reel, if you dont, the a big fish can spool you easily bc you probably only have about 100 yards of fly line.
