Suzuki GSX-8R review: Suzuki's new twin-pot sports bike ridden on road and track

  • Suzuki’s first all-new sports bike in a decade lands in 2024, in the form of the #GSX-8R, a parallel twin to take on the new breed of supersports bikes
    Actual all-new motorbikes from Suzuki are a bit like buses - you wait 20-odd years for one, and then a few arrive all at once. The latest fruit to fall from Suzuki’s big blue tree is the new GSX-8R, and like a lot of modern sports bikes on the market, it has more in common with a naked sibling than a championship podium.
    It is, of course, based on the Suzuki GSX-8S naked, a bike launched in 2021 at the EICMA show. The silk blanket had barely touched the floor and already people (myself included) were musing about how easy it would be to turn it into a sports bike, ready to take the fight to the already existing Aprilia RS660 , Yamaha R7 and more.
    Suzuki listened to that noise, and to sample the new machine I’ve been flown out to sunny Seville for a one-day test, starting on the Monteblanco circuit in the morning and then threading up into the mountains in the afternoon.

    I am a long time Suzuki owner, many GS, GSXRs, and SV650s. Suzuki is so good a developing a package greater than the sum of it's parts. I see a future where track days and racing classes will be full of this bike; a modern day SV650S. I will be getting one; hopefully the blue won't be sold out 🙂

      Suzuki has its own way in everything, they don't keep up with the others and dont do that the majority of riders want. They have kept their heritage for decades (See GSXR and Hayabusa). They design a new motorcycle every 10 years and ever more, but when they do it it's always beyond the competition. I like their way and we Suzuki fans have her in our hearts. This motorcycle will stir the waters of riding both track and road! Suzuki 🥇🙏🏁👌

    Great review! Thanks, Toad. Suzuki seems to have nailed it. This rig will absolutely sell. Sounds like a real-world, high-value combination of abilities and it looks great. It should be bulletproof, too! How does it ride compared to the S?

    Really appreciate your review of this bike Toad, very concise and detailed, looks like a bike that will suit a lot of people, I've recently returned to riding motorcycles and have refurbished a CBR400RR Gullarm which is great fun on modern sticky tyres, I was considering a sports tourer such as the GSX-S1000GT for longer rides but how tempting is this 8R for same.

    Building and owning bikes such as the GSX-8S and 8R is the result of being honest: No, you can´t really utilize 150 hp+ on public roads without risking license and/or life. And no, you also don´t need stellar speeds to have fun. And another no: Lesser and lesser people have 25.000+ Euro to spare for the latest and greatest 200 hp liter-bike/1200 v-four. When 10 years ago Yamaha presented the MT-07 at really reasonable prices and KTM followed with an attractive, but affordable 390 Duke I had hopes that a younger generation of riders will follow in the footsteps of our ever-aging group of current bike-riders. But I don´t see a new wave of motorcycle-buyers. At least not on the road ...
    As a rider with nearly 40 years of experience I´d buy the 8S or 8R in a heartbeat if I were in the market for a new bike. And I´d choose it over the small Triumph triple (too revy for my taste, although I loved the big triples I had) and over the new Hornet. The only somewhat interesting KTM-offering would be the 890R Duke and it is 1,5x the price of the Suzuki. They really let us wait in Hamamatsu, but it was worth it. A grunty engine in a capable chassis with good brakes - what´s not to like?

    Great review, thanks Toad. Is the new more focused Showa suspension going to be a bit harsher on the equivalent of English B roads? That is where I do my fun riding? Great bike, which I will test ride and possibly swap my 8S for. Pity they did not put adjusters on the suspension and maye tune a few more horses out if it.

    Years ago I had a GSX650F This is a reincarnation of this bike. It doesn't even pretend to be a GSXR; it's only the egotistical numpties at MCN that think is ought to be.

    What this could have been: GSX-R 800. Updated version of the 750. Proper clip ons not handlebars, four sylinders not two, blinkers integrated in mirrors not sticking out, fully adjustable suspension not preload only, brembo brakes, 160 hp not 80. Oh well. Times are different I suppose....

      @@paulconnell1309Yeah, different times as I said. But it's mostly due to emission regulations I think. It's easier to comply with a bigger bore engine such as the 1000. For 600s only Kawa still makes em.

    80 horsepower from an 800cc? Absolute GARBAGE. That bike should be putting out 170+

    • @paulconnell1309
      @paulconnell1309 7 місяців тому +5

      Nah. 170 bhp is a litre bike. Even the grunty Z900 only produces 123bhp.
      The GSX S750 (four cylinder) and more expensive Street Triple (R triple) both produce around 114bhp if you rev the shed out of them, and 80NM or torque. The 8R produces 78Nm of power but at lower revs, so for everyday riding it actually feels more responsive and quicker than both bikes. (I have owned a Street Triple and ridden the S750 many times. I own the GSX 8S.) And it makes its 82bhp at 8000 rpm, way earlier than the other two. The real world reality is that you can not put that 80 bhp onto the road for more than a few seconds and you are losing your licence or going too fast (except in Germany) for the road.

    • @dualsportoutdoors

      @@motorr7394 KTM 690 is a single cylinder and has almost the same hp. Harley Davidson has 150 hp twins. A GSXR 600 has 124 hp. It's pathetic for an 800cc sport bike to only have 80 HP

    • @danielandrew24
      @danielandrew24 7 місяців тому +2
