Nord Lead 2x : Modular Style Sounds

- Back before I had a VCS3 I found that my Nord Lead 2x could make some pretty convincing modular sounds.
The Mod Envelope and 2 LFO's can be routed to some interesting places and, he Amplifier has an incredibly long release time allows you just to play a note and noodle. Being that you are in a slow release the whole the sound slowly evolves even if you don't touch anything.
I added some annotations to show how the patch is changing the oscillators and some of the choices I made along the way to keep the modular vibe going as long as I could. I hope you can use some of these ideas!
When I flushed my toilet last evening these exact same sounds is what I heard!
One of the few recordings showing the true possibilities of nord lead...
Thanks :D It seems to no longer be a ''lust'' synth. As such the prices are really good second hand at the moment. I hope people pick them up while the going is good. They sound exceptionally unique!
Listen to anything by AG cook and this synth is all over it
ive watched this vid so many times, and honestly it sold me on a nord lead 2x. i ended up getting one. by far the most beautiful sounding synth subtractive synth i ever heard, i love making sounds similar to this vid with it. i havent had a lot of synths compared to most synth-heads but i use it a benchmark to compare other synths against and its been genuinely helpful in deterring unnecessary purchases. its not an analog sound but it sounds like something beyond analog. i kinda described it in my head once as like shiny crystals floating in a cave. with simply some delay and reverb, it can get so psychedelic so quick
Thankyou for the views :D I still love my Nord 2x, as you say its very unqiue and to me very much the sound of the 90's and early 2000's amibent movement. Keep learning it... there is so much it can do!
This is fantastic! Got to try it myself! Got one this summer and mainly been using it for pads and leads, but this?? This thing is beyond amazing.
Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed. Indeed there is a lot of magic hiding away in the Nord 2's you just need to find it. It sounds so unique which is a rare thing in todays analog 24db ladder filter world :D
Congratulations!!!!! Your work is very musical and fine!!!
Thank you :D
I appreciate the notes on technique! Happy travels!
Thank you :D stay safe!
this patch video is truly perfect .. only one of brilliant rec about this synth in youtube. thanks.
I would love to do more on the Nord 2x but the clips are always very unpopular to viewers. Such a shame as its amazing and very unique sounding synth :D
Nuts, bro. No wonder this synth is such a legend.
For an early Virtual Analog it has a very unique sound :D
Wow! Always loved such waterish modular sounds!
Since I do not own Nord Lead 2, but have Synth1 vst, which is based on and inspired by Nord Lead, maybe it is worth to try to re-create your patch in that VST... :)
Thanks for posting this!
If you keep everything as low as possible and start up there should be no reason why you should not be able to do it :D Synth 1 is VERY close to my ears!
Well, I tried and got pretty similar but not exactly the same results. :)
great sounds!
Very underrated synth by many :D Worth getting one if you can!
It can make nearly anything. Those superfast LFOs can do wonders! :)
Just great! 👍 Close your eyes and you would think that sound was coming out of some souped up modular rig.
Thanks :) It was my VCS 3 .. before I built one :D
I'm about to create another UA-cam account just to double-like this video.
Thanks :D This video did terrible vies wise when I made it, but its had some decent views now !
Bleeps & bloops trend is growing! I'm in the market for a highly versatile synth and I'm on Clavia land right now, does this have a sequencer?
Nope, no sequencer only a very basic Arp :D
Thank you! I did this modular styled sounds many times with my Novation K-Station. It's suited perfectly for those kind of low freq osc "needle impulses" routed to filter + reverb "AKS" sounds. But I never got the right approach to that on my NL4r. Your video was a big help, now I am there where I wanted to go.
Nice one :D Glad the clip helped you ! I used to use my NL2x all the time to simulate a AKS until I built one a few years ago :D
Outstanding - thanks!!
Thanks :D The Nord 2x never seems to get the love it deserves :D
I watched this video many times so now it's time to reproduce this on my 2x hoping to blip blop myself to nirvana or death.
The patch is brilliant, tweaking also smooth, well done sir.
Thanks! Its one of those things you discover by accident and then play with until you get interesting results. I must suggest getting a demo of Soundtoys Echoboy Jnr and placing that into ambient mode! It gives very unique responses to the incoming sounds :D
@@100ThingsIDo tell me about it! Since getting old and useless I play much less yet sometimes I forget myself in one patch and keep triggering 1 chord aaaand tweak the crap out of it for an hour until my other half asks me if I'm having a stroke or something :D
Love tweaking my old beloved virC as well not modular sounds but it gets me every time when sweet spot is found.
Should you have any other epiphanies of this kind promise you will post it here.
Try it with 4 different patches and move between them with a really nice reverb supporting it ..... Ambient heaven ! :D
@@100ThingsIDo well I could not reproduce your exact sound darn. Nevertheless I have spent about 2h which would be a great source of effects for film industry :)
To be honest I have had exactly the same idea yesterday you mentioned : why not to do it on 4 sounds at the same time!
I will be trying this today.
I kind of think about behringer neutron now. Tempting to get a budget semi modular.
Don't forget to record the Jam's ... you can always cut up the sound for samples later :D
These sounds are made by a genius!!!
Thanks for such a kind comment. Its such a great synth :D
Really cool! Thanks! :-)
Thanks for chekcing out the clip. Hope it inspires :D
Very interesting sound and atmosphere. Greets to the funny elefants😀
Thanks TipTop, if I get a chance I'll do an exploration of the Ring Modulator in the next few weeks! :D
Impressive!
Thanks! You can get some seriously nice sounds! Before I built my VCS3 I used the LFO's to emulate those kinds of sounds :D
the effects are very easy to do on the nord lead and it's very impressive.
Indeed, a seriously underrated synth. I'm thinking of doing another clip on it soon :D
Wonderfull!!!
Thank you :D
Not at all! You're cooler JMJ
This sounds really good! How do you make this sound so good?? You know more than I do when it comes to making your own sounds.
Mostly this is high resonance and a lot of LFO's against the Envelope and Cutoff. Hope this helps :D
Lusting for a NL1 lately, the bevelled KB version with voice expansion? Kind of a piece of history.
Hey Kevin, the NL1 sounds quite different and has that really nice metal fold on the top right of the keyboard. I can see the attraction ... possibly a future classic! :D
Cool man, I get lost for hours random noodling on my ks4, with similar soundscapes
I was so close to buying a KS4 until I decided I had to have a Nord. :O
Right i need to get one of these to make rain drop sounds..........and possibly a CLUB MIX of the Clangers on Weed!
Ok liking the ‘bacon frying’ sounds @ 3:36
LOL, I forgot about the Clangers in the clip! :D Never enough rain drop sounds in my life ! ! !
this is mental
I'll take that in a good way :D
100 Things I Do oh for sure! I just purchased a secondhand lead 2, so watching all the videos until it arrives. great playing
Thanks .. The NL2 sure has a very unique sound. Its perfect for standing out in a mix. the Res adds the buzz of bandpass in the 24db filter mode, I hope you enjoy, I used to have a 2xRack but sold it to get the keyboard I love it so much, a true and unique classic :D
super!
Thanks for checking out the clip :D
i check all of yours. ver, very musical and inspiring. thanks.
Thanks for the kind comment. Glad you enjoyed :D
Does anybody know if the A1 can do similar things?
The LFO set-up on the Nord A1 looks very different, possibly not but worth going down to your local Nord dealer and having a go first. I hear good things about the A1 :D
You just sold me Nord Lead 2x!
for the price you can get them now its a must have! :D It can sound very bland but if you explore making multi-patches on it .... it really sounds amazing :D
@@100ThingsIDo Absolutely! I'd like to learn more about sound synthesis, so I'm sure Nord Lead is the best decision to start from. I also think it's suitable for making some killer tracks as well, isn't it? ;-)
@@Psyxxx84 Indeed, if you learn it you should be able to do some awesome sonics :D
Nice! Was it all done using a single slot? And some form of external delay and reverb by the sound of it?
Yep, All one shot as far as I remember. Prob Valhalla Vintage 'Verb or Eventide Black Hole + delay
Works great. I just lost 1 hour to it
- I also noticed if you engage the Distortion while moving the wheel upwards, since it’s engaging a Low pass filter ads a lot of grit to the sound. Try the 24db Lowpass for more drastic change in the pitch wheel. I prefer to use the 12Db Lowpass filter, it’s a bit more subtle but gives ya a lot of control over the button end from the 2nd Oscillator.
Good fun specially if you add a Valhalla Shimmer or Strymon Big Sky. That patch is a beauty
Thanks Alex, the sky is the limit! I found the rack version with the trigger button is the best one for keeping you focused on sonic exploration but with the keys you get more LFO possibilities. One day I will pick up and Strymon for sure :D
Man, those elephants....
OK... I will! .... .... ... :D
By the way, I have a NL4, and though it has more features, it is a bit difficult to get results very close to this. Maybe it‘s your FX box?
The filters on the NL4 are quite different. The 2x has a quite unique sound where the filters give and extra bandpass sounding buzz to the tones. I've not had the chance to play a NL4 yet so i'm not sure how the modulation sources have possibly also changed :D The effects are just high quality reverb and delays.
some reverb?
Yep, a touch of Valhalla Vintage Verb by the sound of it :D
Strange camera angle :D
Closest I could get the Camera and Tripod to the keys without having to move the studio around :D
I hate this stupid comment
@@coronelsakura2841 Chill mate he's a friend I was just jesting ;D
sounds like k5000
Never had the pleasure yet of playing a K5000.. It looks interesting! :D
Yeah, I love mine, but I am finally getting myself a Lead 2 this week. Will be my first nord.
The 2 is a lot of fun! Make sure you play with the FM / Ring Mod and Patching multiple presets concurrently for very interesting results :D
