I served with the Army as an infantryman in Iraq. I served as a designated marksman for the 2nd infantry division and I was issued a smith enterprise m14 crazy horse, a.r.m.s scope mount, Harris bipod, topped off with a Leupold mk 4 . We later got sage EBR chassis systems issued as well.
Just set up my Springfield Scout Squad...walnut stock. After I figured out which round was most accurate (168 gr BTHP Federal Sierra Match) I white colored my yardage and windage marks and set it for a 200 yard zero. After I was able to consistently hit MOA at 100 yards I installed a Nikon 2x9 scout scope on quick detach low mounts forward of receiver and mounted a Beartooth brand adjustable cheek riser. Last week hitting steel at confirmed 400 yards....next week were going out to 500 and maybe 6. I love my Scout Squad. Great Video man! Thanks.
Great overview
I love his videos because he knows that most people are on a budget and he really speaks to that group of people, we don't all have a load of money to spend on guns and gear and watching Reid's videos have definitely saved me time and money
you're a natural straight forward teacher/coach......keep it up! Stay humble!
He did work as a history teacher in highschool.
cool....same here
Your M14 has a beautiful piece of walnut.
That’s what she said
All of our DMs in my units in the Army have used the M14 from the beginning. Now we use the EBR. Some individual units might have pressed M16s into service, but we use the same guns the Marines use.
The Immortal I am pretty ignorant when it comes to small group roles and such. The DM I remember had scopes that's about all I remember and in one drill they had to get the sniper.
The DM How are they used most of the time ?
The PNW Rider
Most of the time, I kept the DMR in the trunk of the humvee. We brought it out in traffic control points, long halts, and on dismount patrols. We would set up a 3 man position 100 meters from the rest of the platoon to perform overwatch or move with the HQ squad to return fire against any long ambushes.
Thanks for the clarification guys
The Immortal Were you on kelly hill ?

Oh, I wasn't vat Benning. I was in 2nd Brigade at Stewart from 2003 to 2009
Wow!! I was surprised the HK G3/91 didn't get the nod for a consistent reliable 308 performance.
Great video as always.
***** Yeah I have a couple also. All of them have run like Swiss watch, LoL.
MatteoSixSeventyFour Check the service records- there's a reason why most countries that had a choice about what to get chose the FAL over the G3. In fact, the only reason the G3 exists is that the West Germans couldn't get FALs. There's a reason why dozens of firearms from different companies and designers use gas piston designs, and only one company and a few designers use roller-delayed blowbacks. When the rollers fail, they'll fail badly, and be hard to fix.
Jon Hendrickson While I won't dispute that when a roller delayed system goes down. It goes down hard. But proper care does much to remedy that malady. In most instances the problem is directly a result of improper care. Once one becomes familiar with the system and the acceptable variance of the bolt gap. When armed with feeler gauges the steps to good preventive maintenance can be taken with ease. The 3 points or causes for concern on the roller delayed system are, the rollers, the locking piece (lug) and the firing pin. The firing pin is becoming less prone from advancement in materials, machining processes and design improvements. The locking piece, is the least or less likely part for failure. This is due to its substantial size. But understanding its pivotal roll can aid in rapid repair. The rollers are the quick fix part of the equation. And it takes little space to maintain an inventory of rollers and the associated parts. The rest of the internals are built to endure a lot and are of a substantial or beefy enough quality. You can remove the ejector from these type of rifles and proper extraction and ejection is still carried out. And of course there is no gas system issues to contend with. BTW the CETME/G3/HK91 still sees service use in Africa. The G3 is still in service use in Iran. And the MG42 saw reliable service from 3 different countries military in Iraq & Afghanistan.
MatteoSixSeventyFour the G3/91 is a FAL.
Stan W No...it is not!! I suggest you look up the differences between an FAL and a G3/CETME/HK91. I've owned semi-auto FAL's (DS Arms) and I still own a G3 & G3 clones
. I've also built from receiver and receiver flats G3/Hk91's & HK93's.
Reid, excellent overview of the designated marksman and the dmr. I am a 1/8 and MCSFCO Kings Bay Veteran. I look forward to seeing how you outgrow your former employer's business. Semper Fi.
I would donate a kidney and my left ball for an M14. The left ball is the good one too.
Soprano-They are Beautiful Historic, collector rifles, and very much get the appeal to own one.
Functionally though I would be interested to see how it compared to its modern day competition chambered in 308/7.62x51mm AR pattern rifles, how would it compare accuracy wise at distances >750Yards compared to equivalent priced more recently produced alternatives like scar 17/scar 20, Pof Revolution, KAC sr-25, LWRC REPR mk2 Ect??
Soprano: Firearms news has them for sale through suppliers.
... if you’re serious: I know a guy.
@@fook-joby-den6172 He said it in the video, the AR-10 pattern rifles break alot. There is more than just groups for a DMR. The M110 did not last and wore out fast. The new version M110A1 specs say 1.5 MOA adn is an HK. The M-14/M1a just gets it done reliably. Everyone thinks the AR pattern is newer than the M-14 but in reality the AR-10 was built in the 50's about the time the M-14 was designed. The gas system came from the old Johnson rifle from the 1930's the USMC adopted but found in combat conditions it jammed a lot and had reliability issues just like the M-16 did in Vietnam early days. Due to the problems the USMC adopted the M1 Garand like the Army. You see the AR platform is not as new and innovative as people think and the M-14 is not outdated like people think.
What’s your blood type? I have one and my uncle needs a kidney seriously
The ONLY gun channel I've seen that talks absolutely NO bs, 100% truth
Reid Henrichs great video and Semper fi! Was 02-06 and was also a designated marksman. Miss my DMR14. Keep up good work!
I'm using a Sig Sauer 716 AR10. Piston driven. Extremely smooth operation and has been extremely reliable. No malfunctions after about 500 rounds. When switched to Winchester Match .308, at 100 yards, I was getting .5 MOA. Daniel Defense also makes very reliable AR10s specifically for the DMR role. They have been so reliable and accurate, the British Ministry of Defense purchased them directly for the DMR positions in the Royal Marines and Army. This is 2015- not the 1980's or 90's. There are very reliable and accurate AR10s now.
This is the FIRST time I have seen any explanation of marksmanship that uses a U.S. Optics scope. The value of USO cannot be understated! Good stuff!
Very informative! I wish I could afford to come out and train with you all. I know it'd be an awesome experience and I'd definitely grow as a shooter. Perhaps one of these years...
Reid you are a no nonsense no bull kind of guy. Straight to the point and I like that. Thanks! Stay frosty!
Hello Reid. Just thought to say that I'm really digging your channel between you & the Patriot nurse there is a ton of good information. Thanks a bunch.
What about a Mark 12 Mod 1 SPR? This platfrom has been used by our Special Ops from the beginning of the Iraq war up until now. It seems reliable.
o m16a4 with a acog
I have no plans to build a rifle like this but hearing Reid explain systems is just plain educational. He does the homework that the rest of us benefit from. Thanks, Reid!
Yeager and Birdzell put a DPMS G2 recon thru a FR and WOTR class with according to them around 4K rounds and only occasional lube and no actual cleaning and it went through flawless. 1-1.5 MOA with cheap bulk ammo and weight comparable to a 16" AR carbine. For $1200 that seems like it would be a hell of a rifle
I was in that way of the rifle class. Every student got the opportunity to use that rifle. It suffered MANY malfunctions. Probably 1 or 2 stoppages per magazine, sometimes more when dirty. Things aren't always what you're told.
I like your no nonse, no frills, practical vs tactical approach,
My grandfather was in that role with the Army in the Korean War, although I don't think they were calling it designated marksman back then. He had a scoped 1903 Springfield for the job. I wish I had even half of the shooting skills he did.
Former Jarhead here, I own a Springfield Socom 16 and just recently found my GI WEB sling from my days in the Corps collecting dust in a closet. Slapped that sling on and man it feels good on this rifle, like having a third arm to stabilize the damn thing.
You sound a lot like a young Yeager in this video. He's eating a lot of crow on the subject of AR10s now. Also the scar is awesome.
Thanks for being here for US brother. Semper fi
I love this guys ability to present info, he's talking to me not "at" me
I'm sorry I'm creepin on old posts, but you are speaking TRUTH!
I know it doesn’t matter for shooting, but the wood on that rifle is beautiful!

Nick 718
Operators ditched it long ago for a reason. If you need to justify that you overpaid for underperformance find another way to compensate.
@Nick 718 my experience says different.
@Nick 718 sure thing trollholio...... I'll keep stating fact.
Nice, smart discussion :) And thank you for serving.
I found that the stuff you put up in the youtube is always informative, clear and well-articulated! Subscribed!
What I like most about you’re videos is that you don’t come off like a d-bag like most of the “UA-cam operators”.
Believe it or not, a Saiga-brand 7.62x39mm AKM makes a good DMR if you use 154 grain JSP ammo and set up a low - medium power scope with a 100 yd. zero.
Just make sure you get a trigger job done and swap the stock with one that has a cheekrest. That's what I did and it is a dream to use. :)
Reid, while you were teaching in the corp. I was in 1st grade lol.
I have have several in the original flavor... Just bone stock irons with welded gas tubes, birch wood, all USGI parts except for the civilian receivers. But i may scope two in case...
nice set up...you should stop by and try our 308 ar at the next shotshow, look for the devildogarms booth at the media day..:)
The FAL is at its design limit in 7.62x51. It was not originally made for the NATO round. The M1A is a Garand. Ultimate battle rifle, seventy five years ago. To me,there are two types of DMR....the PSL/Dragonov,and the HK91. I have 100+ HK mags bought from Keepshooting.com for $1.50 each. My PTR91 is 100% reliable, and very accurate after a simple trigger job. My PSL with 8X combloc scope hits steel plates at 440 yards, with cheap Russian ammo from the 1970's. To each his own. But,damn, those Ruger Scout bolt actions with the laminate stocks sure are pretty.
ptr 91 is a proven weapon for sure.
Your "Old boss" Yeager said the same thing about AR-10's. He now has a couple on his "Approved list" But has yet to have students bring them to class
Nice review! I have heard that the original receiver is cast - this is what makes it sing, just like a cast bell. Chinese receivers are forged so they are possibly stronger but they don't sing.
Thanks Reid I get tired of these guys that I know that works at a gun shop here in GA, always saying " well I'm only running 55gr or 62gr if the "shtf" and my reply to that is, so if you're rifle goes dry and I'm beside you trying to hand you a mag your going to be picky of the type of ammunition that's going in the rifle!!?? Like you said Reid " just get it man any will do!" Thanks for the great info brother!
I wish the Socom 16 didn't cost 2 G's!!!
@Nate
You and the other guy are replying to a 4 year old comment...prices have changed.
@Tyrone Koumoundouros
I assume you mean Quantico, as in the FBI.
The FBI does not make guns.
Answer your own question bub
@Tyrone Koumoundouros
I dont know about buying guns from the Marines...I doubt it.
Your original question asked me how much a Springfield Armory M1A "socom" cost. That question is silly to ask not only because you can find out yourself, but the reason why you asked.
I made a comment stating that replying to a 4 year old comment about the NOW price, is pointless.
Prices are fluid and change everyday, let alone over 4 years.
Now you bring up what, my subscribers? Is that what the 136 number is?
Did I ever claim to be an youtuber?
Or are you as crazy and mentally unstable as I now believe?
Snowflake is a term that gets thrown around a lot in the gun community. Funny thing is, the community is filled with people like you who are pure snowflake.
You are upset and bringing up completely irrelevant things...
@Tyrone Koumoundouros
Btw, now that I know how unstable you are and know you need help....
$1400. That's the lowest price I found in my 30 secs of looking.
March 5th PSA had one for sale at the price of $1200. Out of stock now.
And I'll explain some other basic knowledge you seem to lack.
The 1400 dollar rifle is from a site you may not be able to order from depending on where you live.
grabagun is the site.
You're welcome. Now spend less time on UA-cam and go seek some very basic life skills.
@Tyrone Koumoundouros
Holy hell you're a mess.
My feelings? The only one going crazy here is you. You've literally had a meltdown here.
Looking for info on UA-cam is a joke bub.
You need some serious help and you really need to get off of this crap platform and go seek real knowledge and real life skills.
Again, you're welcome.
If I may, I’d like to plug Bradley cheek rest for the comb and sight alignment on a set up like this. Pricey but well worth it for a piece of rugged equipment that will last a lifetime.
I have a pretty nice DSA FAL with the full 21" barrel. I wish I had chosen a different optic, though. When I put it together, it didn't seem like there were near the choices we have now. I bought a Nikon big game hunting scope, because it was good glass, and I figured the 1-4x with a German #4 reticle would be good for close targets and movers. I wish now I had gone with a 2-7x at least. My eyes are not getting better as I get older.
With the train of thought of something being proven. It causes you to miss out early on the things that are newer to the market and actually work.
The ruskies first came up with the concept of the designated rifleman back when they invented their dragonov svd. Pretty much the same concept, and we're finally catching up to them! Great video Reid! Keep 'em comming!
That so? Well thank you for the correction!
The Russians deployed designated marksmen at the squad level on a wide scale. The idea was to get waves of ak-weilding troops charging forward with marksmen a little farther back picking off officers and targets of opportunity.
Cool video and rifle!
Great information. Really appreciate the content. I am on a journey to build a reliable AR10 style rifle that performs. My mindset is, it wont improve if we dont put effort in figuring out the problems. But I have the time and resources to dedicate to it. So far, I have not found one off the shelf that can make it through 1000+ shots without fail. I'd be happy with 1000 rounds in a day.. My current build made it through 500 round day, but there was tons of cool down time throughout.
SHWELL11 I think that is why the DPMS GII was built. From my meager experience it's too hard to do since there is no one pattern to the AR10/LR-308 platform. (_yes I use the horrid platform term, LoL_) Closest I've seen were the piston POF 308's But that's completely antidotale.
Any of my LR-308/AR10 pattern guns are best suited to long range steel banger range guns or semi-auto hunting rifles. And chambered in anything other than 308, ie .243/.260/.338 Federal
i know your a weapons instructor. have you plans to grow to have an offensive driving course. i know my uncle was a driver in the army. and he was so good the dale earnheardt said he was the best at moving people from in-front of him. yes he drove the same dirt tracks during the same years as ralph earnheardt did. and my uncle learned these tactics during his service driving the base commander at fort jackson s.c. in his staff car. he was written up for accommodations by the base commander. sometimes to stand to fight is commendable. there are times to flee, and in a none opportune situations. see your venture growing to that level, and make it happen.
I have the standard which is also great. The Colt M4 Carbine also.
Reid, your getting better in front of the camera. I like this type of vid.
take care
Dave
also I know you hate 308 ARs but mine hasn't had an issue since I put the adjustable gas block on it. they are picky though.. you're right about that.
I'm an AK guy but for those long distance shots I prefer my FAL STG-58. AKs and FALs Rock!
LMT 308 MWS. Is a great rifle. Hasn't failed me yet. 4286 rounds through it so far.
175 SMK is superior past 800meters . Inside of 800 it doesn't matter. Use what your rifle likes.
Hey Reid, another great video! I have two questions, 1) What things are the most common to fail on an AR-10 style platform, and 2) How do you think that a 1.5-6 power scope would do in DMR role? Thanks again!
just purchased m14 paratrooper from James River Armory forged receiver , national match sites and flash suppressor grade match barrel in dark walnut outstanding weapon. Mounted 6x24x50 etched glass scope for distance .
The ringing sound actually comes from the flash hider. It basically acts as a tuning fork. The receiver manufacturing process plays no function in getting that orgasmic sound.
I can't wait to use your title the next stand down
I use a POF .308... I have used the drap out of it... EXTREMELY reliable... never crapped out....
scar 17? knights M110? obviously high end stuff so for the common man its a stretch , never really liked the fal in a dmr /heavy bbl w scope role. just too heavy, I really like the m1a as its proven and pretty hard to beat and affordable relatively speaking
I was told recently that ArmaLite got a new manager, one who shoots competition and is completely revamping the company. My dad and I were poking around the local gun store and were looking at AR-10's. The DPMS was high on the list, but then we took a look at the new ArmaLite and were very impressed. They take DPMS magazines, come with nice triggers, and even have AXTS parts like their charging handle. Now, they're new, so they're far from proven, but I'd like to hear from someone that their new AR-10 made it through a Rifleman 1 course. I think that day is coming pretty soon. ...sadly I won't be that guy. I shelled out way too much on my BCM already.
+TheMetalHeaD256 Check out the S&W M&P10. Very nice setup and accurate rifle. It has kind of a pencil barrel but thickens into a bull barrel the closer to the receiver and it's 18" with 5R rifling. Weight is lite for a .308 so it's easier to carry. Only problem I can see is that is has some proprietary components. You're not going to easily fix it with parts from another AR10. So far it's been very reliable and again I must say very accurate.
I'm also very impressed with that one. I'd just love to be able to test the M&P, the new ArmaLite 3-Gun 18" in .308 (and in 5.56 for that matter), and the new Midwest Industries AR-10. But I am but a college student and already spent my life savings on a BCM rifle and CZ pistol.
I was a sdm in the Army (11B) and we used M-14 EBRs
"Designated tack Driver"
Would you be able to do a video for a designated breacher? Shotgun etc...
The only marksman rifles I've seen in the Army were M14s and M21s. I've never seen anyone put a long range scope on a 5.56 rifle in the Army.
Saw Rangers running around with scopes on SCAR17s
Fantastic Rifle !!! Totally agree with you Reid ! I prefer the Fn Fal but to each his own .. As always , thoroughly enjoy your vids . Keep up the great work . Best wishes to you and your family !!
Perfect DMR.
Thank you for your work.
I was unaware that AR-10's had a lot of problems. Although, I have wanted an M1A for awhile and would definitely get one over an AR-10 anyways. A guy was shooting a really nice one next to me at a range once, just HAMMERING the place. It was awesome.
All the Army DMR's I saw were carrying the new M14's with the paratrooper aluminum stocks on em.
Great video man I've been on the fence about getting an m1a or dsa fal myself and I think your video convinced me to take the plunge
Mine is a Barrett REC 10 good to 800yds with a 6x leupold v2, Sierra 175gr bullet. 1 to 1.5 moa out to 800ys. Much more accurate than my m1a's. Cost $2300 with the scope. Just letting people know. But the M1a is a great rifle. Thanks for your videos. Do a review on the Barrett 308 that would be awesome.
Mine is an inch pattern FAL. I bought a dust cover/scope base from DSA so I can mount a scope. I need to replace the barrel on mine but I don't know any gunsmiths that would have the right tools and headspace gauges. Aside from that, it still shoots 2MOA which is adequate.
The Army's choice was more of a unit dependent thing, units had to choose based on budget and availability as well as location. In Iraq's urban combat (where the target type is short -medium range, small, and fleeting, like a dude shooting out a tiny hole in a wall 200 yds away) an m16/m4 with a magnified scope would work well, and doesn't cost the unit much to set up. In Afghanistan you want a .308, bastards hung out at 600-800 yds or farther. So we got EBR m14s. But they are an expensive and maintenance heavy pain. I have no idea about the m110 sass in the DMR role, but I'm sure the army is going to want an ar type .308 going forward. Maybe a SCAR (they buy everything else from FN, so why not?)
Of course a Marine is going to go with a M14. The FAL and the M14 are the most legendary in their categories. Both have been proven in warfare. I think the scar would be a new entry if it were standard issue like the others above.
if you go non nato 6.5 grendal is a good compromise...mine is the most accurate rifle ive ever shot...cold bore cold shooter sub .5 moa multiple times...shot out to 930yds no sweat...pretty low round count.around 500 no issues
The designated marksman is what everyone really should be. But since rifle marksmanship is fading, the carbine is now the standard weapon.
It is possible that in the future military forces may be separated into categories, just as are most law enforcement agencies in the United States. Today if a police officer in a big city gets into trouble he runs for cover and calls for tactical backup - SWAT. Likewise it may be that ordinary troops in the military establishments may be issued carbines with the understanding that if a situation arises where skill is required, another sort of organization, equipped with rifles, will be called up.

Therefore the close of the 20th century may see the end of the era of the rifleman. It is not that the rifle has been rendered obsolete, but the rifleman may have been. A prominent military historian concluded after the Korean War that men could not be trained to shoot the rifle well in battle. My

Dear lord.....I'd buy that m14 in that set up just to look at it on my wall.Beautiful rifle.
I don't have a ton knowledge of G3s, 91s or psg1 styles, I love German guns, however they really beat you up With perceived recoil from my experience, more then other full size battle rifles it seems. The m14 and fall are much more proven like you said.
I like the g3. Free float barrel and most reliable of the big 3 NATO cold War battle rifles.
.... im pretty sure the ring is the tines of the flash hider/brake. wrap your fingers around that guy and slap that charging handle again.
M1A and FAL for the win!!!
i would have to say that the m-16 comment is a little off. when i left the Army they had already switch to the M14/EBR. That might be true for P.O.G unit but in the infantry or ar least where i have been its EBR and M110
That is a great weapon. I was looking g at one the other day. But I have decided to go with the rock-ola m14. Thanks sir for sharing this video.
I checked out some of the guns you suggested and whoooooooo Weeeeeee. I think I will get extra grenades and let them get closer LOLLLLLLL
if you got A LOT of money, the Falkor Petra, a semi auto 300 win mag 1/4 MOA AR, would do a great job.
EspionageVeteran I am a 300 wm lover myself
Army also uses this as a dmr rifle, actually called m14ebr
I have an M1A and it's great. I also have a couple friends 1 has a FAL and the other has a PTR91 (licensed HK91 clone) and for the money if you don't wanna go M14 pattern like I did the PTR I think is a better choice over the FAL. In our experience the PTR91 has been more accurate and just as reliable as the FAL and a plus for the PTR91 is that parts and mags are CHEAP! Surplus mags for $3!?!?! I wish I could find surplus M14 mags for that price. The only downside I've seen for the PTR91 is reloaders will hate it! Uppon ejection it destroys brass. Just my .02.
I know this is an old video but good job. Glad to see not everyone drinks the AR-10 kool aid. Not hacking on the AR pattern rifles but my limited experience has been the same as yours. I love my M1A .
I have finally finished my.
Great clarification! BTW . . . I used the M14 in Army Basic, then went on to quad minis' on a Cobra. 7.62 is 7.62, right?
I remember your original impressions of the DPMS Recon .308 at that "other school" were good. Did it eventually crap out behind the scenes?
The G2 isn't considered an AR-10.
Brian Henderson No. Watch the end of the series.
Brian Henderson I have one and I have 300 rounds through it with no FTF/FTE so far. I know that is just breaking the gun in but it is definitely an improvement over the standard AR-10 platform
First point SAS favoured the g3 over standard british issue l1a1(fals) in dusty environments due to it being prone to stoppages with fals. Secondly yeager and his new buddy have been abuse testing the new dpms 762 with good results.
Is the designated marksman a replacement for a drunk marksman?
My g3 variant is solid at 750 yrds it's a nail driver with the garden variety Nikon glass
No DMR for me I am not jumping out of helicopter or kicking down doors mainly target shooting punching holes. So be practical 1-8x light weight easy to handy hit your mark 25 yards to 300 yards man size 18" across have fun and pay your lawyers
Thanks for the knowledge, Reid.
great video as always Reid !
All I can say is wow!!..is the transparency that clear? I have an m1a CQB. I love it. I can make it DMR. Now I have not spent a lot of time on the range with it but my Philosophy of use is hog hunting or hunting in general. Thus, any grain of bullet works grreat? SA says 168 but I think you have more experience. Should I worry about it?
No love ❤️ for the G3/PTR91???
If AR-10s are truly trash, why are there a ton of AR-based .308 platforms being fielded by militaries? Weapons like the M-110, SR-25 and G28 come to mind.
Wish my Springfield made that sound
When I was in 2CR as far as I've seen, everyone who was our designated marksmen used M14's or m110's.
Reid , I know you're not with him anymore .. But when you did the video with TR about the dpms recon g2 308 .. Didn't it make it through the class ? Did you not like it ?
