We invite you to join us on a journey to discover how Hermès Horloger designs, creates and manufactures its iconic "Carré H" watch.
Part 1: movement "H1912" production, assembly & testing
Be sure not to miss part 2 & 3!
- Part 2 will show you how the case and the dial are manufactured.
- Part 3 will show you how the unique Hermès Barénia calfskin strap is hand-made.
In 2010, Hermès introduced the "Carré H", a square timepiece created by Marc Berthier, with a modern aesthetic, designed for instant legibility.
It returns in a new style: Marc Berthier has enlarged the square by a few millimetres and opted for light effects, playing across the steel case with its polished and microbead-blasted finishes, on the dial with its right-angled guilloché work, and on the facetted hands and numerals. This perfectly balanced use of light harmoniously accentuates the clarity of the design, the softened edges of the square, the curved profile of the case, and the cylindrical crystal. Finally, the exclusive font of the numerals - making use of the zero - contributes to the new aesthetic equilibrium
of this watch.

In the description of the video you find all technical data of the Hermès Carré H watch. If you have any questions and/or comments to make please don't hesitate. I am - as always - looking forward to read what you have to say....
Your videos keep getting better and better. I thought the video on Panerai was awesome. This is even better! Cant wait for parts 2 & 3. Thanks Alexander!
George, many, many thanks for your feedback! Reading this I get goosebumps! We are a team... we do also have to thank Jorge, my cameraman and editor ... Thank you Jorge! 😉
I always love these type of videos - thank you for sharing.
You are very welcome! Thanks for the feedback!
Wonderful Alexander. I feel this is a hugely underrated watch company. The watches I have seen are beautifully made, understated, elegant and ooze class. Old school European high quality goods, I loathe the word luxury for that for me means you have to show it to be it where as quality just speaks for itself as in this case. Old money instead of new money.
I love this comment! "Old money instead of new money." That's such a true and lovely way to describe what Hermès is doing! I am sure Hermès is reading here and I am sure they get goosebumps ... Thank you very much for sharing!
As watch collectors we often tend to over look “fashion brands” but as this watch proves overlooking it due to prejudice would be wrong.
Wait until you have seen the other two videos... 😉
Brilliant Alexander, as always. Thank you 👍
That's very kind of you! Like loud applause ... Thank you very much!
Another great video!
I am happy to read this! Part 2 & 3 will even top this one...
Thank you for this very interesting Video
I am happy you liked it! Pleas be sure not to miss part 2 & 3 ...
It is an exhilarating moment when after a nudge to the balance wheel, the watch starts ticking on its own. Always makes me smile.
Magic it is! Yes, I couldn't agree more. I have seen this so many times in my life and every time I can assist such a moment it is a very emotional one for me...
Amazing! Hand made ....priceless!!!
I just wrote this answering your other comment, since it also applies here, let me do it agin: Do you have the chance to get hands-on the watch? If yes, go for a touch and feel... You will like it even more afterwards...
I own a few Hermès watches I prefer them because they are under the radar
Cool! Which ones do you own? Sorry for being curious 😉
WatchAdvisor cape cod Grandes Heures(very interesting movement), Clipper (my favourite)couple of Quartz Cape cods and a Quartz espace dress watch. Apparently this year they’ve got some lovely watches coming out

Part two will be ready soon... Thank you VERY much for the positive feedback!
Their straps are unreal... they're visibly stunning even from a distance.
Stephen Ellias Once you have seen how they are made you will be speechless. That’s Hermès at its best!
Great video Alexander. I've always wondered how all the tiny parts of a watch are made, now I have a better idea. Interesting how everything is computer controlled and recorded for the accuracy testing.
Thanks for this and I await the next two videos.
I will try to film even more details in the future, showing you more details how a movement is manufactured and being set together...
Fantastic video Alexander! Thank you!
We worked hard and we are VERY happy and proud now ...
This kind of content is greatly appreciated!
I will deliver more such content! I know you - the best audience in the world - like it...
Excellent detail, I like seeing the technical side of watch manufacturing.
Please do also watch the two other episodes... 😉
Fantastic Alexander! Fantastic
Thank you very much! I will pass some of the compliment to Jorge, my cameraman and editor...
nice apple watch!
No! French start-designer Marc Berthier designed the watch years ago...
In fact it was in 2010, when Hermès introduced the "Carré H", a square timepiece created by Marc Berthier, with a modern aesthetic, designed for instant legibility.
2019 it returned in a new style: Marc Berthier has enlarged the square by a few millimetres and opted for light effects, playing across the steel case with its polished and microbead-blasted finishes, on the dial with its right-angled guilloché work, and on the facetted hands and numerals. Much appreciated Alex, great video and I like how the music is edited along with the scenes. keep the good work up.
Jorge, my cameraman and editor, will be very happy to read this. Thanks for the compliment!
@@WatchAdvisor Thanks Jorge, it's very creative
excellent, very interesting.
It is always interesting to discover what Hermès is able to do. In the next video you will see how the cases and dials are manufactured and this factory belongs to Hermès. At Vaucher Manufacture Hermès owns a 25 % stake. And the incredible leather-straps are of course manufactured by hand in-house and a speciality of Hermès. So the French deliver more so called in-house with their watches, than many others...
Love Your videos , always professional
Love your comment! 😉 Thank you very much!
WatchAdvisor I couldn’t find any unboxing video of this beautiful watch on UA-cam
Mohammad Z We have one, will get online with one of the next videos...
WatchAdvisor 🙏🏻🤩
Amazing. Thanks Alex 🤠❤️ 🙃 🇳🇿
I am happy you liked the video Albert. It shows that Hermès is a talented watchmaker!
@@WatchAdvisor That moment when the movement just sparked into life..Yes i nearly cried. Like watching my baby girl being born almost. Magic. It's for that reason i only wear Rolex now.
Vaucher is amazing. I want to make my watches but no money... uh man life is never easy
I don’t get the point. Can you please specify?
@@WatchAdvisor Well I want to make my swiss made watches but I don't have the money :( My dream is to make my watches with Vaucher
@@RedloxBeats What kind of watches do you have in mind?
Impresive! For me too much robots but this is my feel. In context of robots. How many watches they sell by year?
Too much robots? Let us stay realistic please, this is how watches today are manufactured, even the most luxurious ones ... Hermès does not communicate such figures...
WatchAdvisor IMO this is wrong way. This is luxury, special, limited and expensive pieces and robot no needed to place watches in the winding machine.
Jacek Malejko These robots are helping to fulfill a long lasting accuracy test of the automatic movement. By actual simulating different wearing conditions Vaucher Manufacture will then know if the movements are ready to go or not. This very useful and also severe testing of each movement lead to an even better quality ...
Jacek Malejko If these watches were made completely by hand like how some independent manufactures do they would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Automation allows the price to remain in somewhat realistic ranges.
Jacek Malejko Google Greubel Forsey - their timepieces are masterpieces of horology that are made and finished completely by hand. Their starting price? $500,000+. Hermès is a luxury brand but their watches are aiming for more of a mass-market than that.
Impressive! However, the "H" pattern is not my cup of tea.
James Pålsson That’s Hermès! Instead of decorating the plates with stripes & co the designers opted for the H. In my eyes not bad at all, since the H makes the watch even more particular...
I actually loved it.
But maybe a more stylized approach would reach a broader group.
