    Not only there were more than one Caesar (the other ones all used the name following the tradition of Augustus Caesar, the first Princeps Civitatis, who used the name Caesar for being his nephew adopted when Caesar died.
    It's from this name (that was pronounced as Kaisar in Latin because C always had a k sound in Latin) that comes German kaiser, Russian Czar, etc
    You would be even more surprised that Gaius Julius Caesar was not the first Gaius Julius Caesar.
    If i an not mistaken, his father and grandfather had the same exact name

    I used to love the PSP game "Gladiator Begins." In the story mode, you could earn enough to buy your freedom and retire ending the game early, or you could continue your gladiatorial career and play all the way to the ending where you would eventually either ally yourself with one of the other characters and save them by killing Commodus or ally yourself with Commodus and become his most loyal bodyguard. One of most amusing things about the game was that while there were multiple language options for the captions, the audio voices all spoke in the same mumbled gibberish but with vocal tones and inflections that quite effectively conveyed the personalities and emotions of the characters.

      Even though I have never played games besides pac man and frogger I could see how they could be really fun.

    "Are you not entertained?"
    Fun Fact: After Maximus shouts that line in the Zucchabar scene, you can see a crew member in jeans and a white t-shirt in the stands on the extreme left.
    Genuinely Merciful Fact: Joaquin Phoenix ad-libbed his "Am I not merciful?" scream. Connie Nielsen wasn't expecting it, and her frightened reaction was genuine.
    Home Sweet Home Fact: Maximus' description of his home (specifically, how the kitchen is arranged and smells in the morning and at night) was ad-libbed. It's a description of Russell Crowe's own home in Australia.
    Heartbreaking Fact: Oliver Reed died three weeks before principal photography ended. Because Proximo was considered a key character, a clause in the movie's insurance contract would have allowed the filmmakers to re-shoot all of Reed's scenes with another actor at the insurer's expense, about $25 million. However, most of the actors and crew were exhausted from the punishing schedule, and Ridley Scott did not want to cut Reed from the movie. The script was rewritten, and a body double and CGI were used to give Reed's character a plausible resolution.

      Interesting facts! Am I not merciful was such a powerful line in the movie! I was sad that Proximo died even though he wasn't the nicest person in the movie but its not my place to judge anyone never mind people who lived in different eras.

    Everyone has their favourite Ridley Scott films but _Gladiator_ unquestionably makes my Top 3 along with 1982's seminal _Blade Runner_ and 1991's road movie par excellence _Thelma and Louise_ . Those three combined I think are untouchable.

    🌿It delivers everything it's title promises. The surprise is that this bold revival of the period "sword -and- sandals" epic does so with solid acting, sure pacing and superior style interspersed with payoff worthy pathos.🎭 "Gladiator "being held by those with short memories is almost as the equal of "Spartacus" or "Ben-Hur". This is more like "Spartacus Lite." Or dark.🌿

    Just to clarify .....
    These are not the men that just fought along side him. Those are Pratoreans. The emporors guard. Not his army. His army would have shown their loyalty.

      @pelbertmyronman 11 місяців тому

      Yes. This is correct. His army would have never done that. The Pratoreans are the emperors personal guards. That's why he says later in the move "How soon can my army be ready to fight? " The answer... For you, tomorrow. That was their loyalty.

    Gladiator is in my top 5 movies of all time, after 23 years of the release finally a sequel is about to be in production in may of this year, so the sequel could come out in theaters in 2024, can’t wait for the sequel to come out.

    That's a point a lot of people dont get: the soldiers set up to kill him were Pretorians, the emperors guard. They didn't fight for or with Maximus. Maximus' soldiers were absolutely loyal to him, that's why they had to take him away from the camp: if his soldiers would have seen him getting executed neither the Pretorians nor the emperor would have mad it out there alive. Especially since Roman generals used to take camp with their most elite legion...

    For better or worse, only men in Rome could become Caesar. Next in line would be Lucius. However, because of him being a juvenile, his mother would have great influence, just like she "somewhat" had with Commodus. Therefore, for all intents and purposes, she would be the defacto-Caesar, until the Senate becomes the supreme ruling entity over Rome again.

    • @ScreenMaureen

    Great Reaction. you have an awesome channel. love all the reactions. A couple points on the history to answer two questions you had.
    The "soldiers" that were going to execute Maximus at the begining, they didn't fight with Maximus. Thats the "Praetorian Guard" which is the personal guard of the Emperor and used as kind of a police force in Rome as well. These aren't the normal troops. They are solely loyal to the Emperor but if the Emperor becomes very weak as far as public support goes they would betray them too which is alluded to at the end when the leader tells them to "sheathe their swords". Basically this is the leader of the Emperor personal body guard realizing Commodus was a lost cause and they were better off with whoever took over next. In real life whenever a new emperor came to power they would give the Praetorian Guard big raises and gifts to keep them loyal.
    Also as far as the title of "Ceasar" goes, its the title of the Emperor. Basically Julius Caesar was the first even though he wasn't officially emperor because he was murdered by the Senate before he could do that. The Senate thought they would take back over but Caesar was such a legend and they made him a Martyr that people supported the concept of Emperor and the first official emperor who was Caesar nephew Octavius realized the power Caesar name and legacy had and used the name for that purpose. He changed his name to "Augustus Caesar" and all the rest of the Emperors followed suit. Even in later history terms like the German "Kaisar" and Russian "Tzar" are derived from the Roman "Caesars" who again were branding themselves to the legacy of Julius Caesar and concept of a Empire.

    • @ScreenMaureen
      @ScreenMaureen  Рік тому +1

    The Princess loved Maximus more than any in life, save her son. A son inferred to actually be Maximus' son. Releasing Maximus to go to his Wife and Son was about as hard a thing to do as she had ever done. So now she will have to reign alone as Empress Consort until her son comes of age. The Princess is the one I feel most sorry for in this movie.
