“His dad probably seen him in the yard and said Damn my son’s a bitch”
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 that comment got me
Lol you know he did. Little bitch ass was over there probably crying bc his shadow disappeared and his dad just dropped his head in disappointment.
Lol glad you enjoyed
🤣
I couldn’t hold it smh I’m just a young Christian tryna find some content that isn’t so plagued with cussing and dirty jokes but man he got me
Nothing wrong with a strong man crying over the death of an honorable man.
Strength and Honor.
Strength and Honor
Strength and Honor!
STRENGTH AND HONOR!
Strength and Honor
I like trains
"Don't call him Caesar... his name is bitch-ass. That's his name for the rest of the movie" LOVE IT.
I still call him that to this day
No shame in crying, man. The ending of that movie got all of us.
It’s a beautiful ending
Jack Gleeson, the actor who played Joffrey, used Joaquin’s performance in Gladiator as inspiration for Joffrey!
I remember hearing that an my first thought was “wow… smart because I can’t stand both these mutha#$*&as, can’t wait to see his next role.” Then Jack retires because of all the Hate for Him not even Joffrey. 😢 usually only really solid Actors can manage to captivate you so much that you believe it and it becomes real for you. Yeet they musta been chasing him with plastic forks and knives 🥺😰
Came here to say that 😂
That explains why they both look so sickly and inbred.
And he nailed that part.
The ending always makes me cry: Maximus returning to his family in death, the fantastic music, his friend smiling and saying "not yet" as at least he gets to return to his family alive... It's just a beautiful moment.
It’s very beautiful
I day dream about the wheat feilds
You and me both!

You know, as many times as I've seen this movie (and it's been a lot!), your comment is the first time I realized that yeah--his friend is free and returning to his family. Thanks for that!

That dude had some amazing quotes
🤣 "I hated him more than homework and waking up early" 🤣
Seriously though, those raw moments of tears man is the biggest reason I'm here. I love being able to share those moments with someone on classic films. Thank you JL.
You welcome. I’m just glad y’all are enjoying them.
Lol I hated dude
@@J_EOMReacts That was my other favorite thing about this reaction, how much hate you had for that dude haha

Facts
I’m still mad Joaquin lost the Oscar that year 😒 You know you deserve an Oscar when 10 years later folk STILL be mad every time they watch your movie 😂
Agree. I love Benecio (I think that's who won that year), but Phoenix should have won for sure imo.
20 years
@@EOMReactsnah he deserved that Oscar
100%. Benicio is a great actor, but that year, Joaquin deserved it. One of my favorite movies.
Yeah he won supporting actor for the movie "Traffic", which is probably
the most boring movie I've ever seen. Absolutely unbearable, still can't finish that movie 20 years later.
I love how at the end, Maximus' vision of the afterlife was the road leading down the hill toward his family farm, with his wife and son waiting there for him.
That was beautiful
It's crazy how EVERY single reactor I have seen do this film, the second Joaquin Phoenix appears, before he even says a word, they say "Oh damn, HE is bad news!".
It’s that I eat shit look on his face
Shortly after this movie came out, we adopted a dog and named him Maximus. He has since passed away but he was a WONDERFUL companion throughout!
You will see him again. But not yet, not yet
I love that you recognize and appreciate Hans Zimmer's music -
Got to appreciate greatness
just realized that was Omid Djalili who sold the slaves to Proximo... :)
The kid who played Jeoffrey cited Joaquin Phoenix character in this movie as a big inspiration to how he portrayed Jeoffrey, so... there ya go!
"Are you not entertained?"
Fun Fact: After Maximus shouts that line in the Zucchabar scene, you can see a crew member in jeans and a white t-shirt in the stands on the extreme left.
Bonus Fact: Maximus' description of his home (specifically, how the kitchen is arranged and smells in the morning and at night) was ad-libbed. It's a description of Russell Crowe's own home in Australia.
Bonus Fact: Joaquin Phoenix ad-libbed his "Am I not merciful?" scream. Connie Nielsen wasn't expecting it, and her frightened reaction was genuine.
Heartbreaking Fact: Oliver Reed died three weeks before principal photography ended. Because Proximo was considered a key character, a clause in the movie's insurance contract would have allowed the filmmakers to re-shoot all of Reed's scenes with another actor at the insurer's expense, about $25 million. However, most of the actors and crew were exhausted from the punishing schedule, and Ridley Scott did not want to cut Reed from the movie. The script was rewritten, and a body double and CGI were used to give Reed's character a plausible resolution.
These facts are brought to you by Gator
Well communicated. Gator is the person of the day. True story. All their comments are spot on.
Enjoy the reaction! 😎
😅 Thanks, Gator! I kept an eye out and did see that crew member in the stands!! Hilarious! And it can be seen bright as day at time stamp 20:03 🤣🤣🤣
Add-on to the last fact, Reed was out drinking and got into a contest with some locals. Needless to say, he won the contest but all the alcohol was what killed him.
Those who love Roman history need to visit the mother country Italy. If you haven’t, your missing out
My favorite line...
"Are you in danger of becoming a good man Proximo?"
"......HA!...."
Holy crap man, there's like 20 cuts in that 2 minute intro lol
Fun Fact: Russell Crowe (Maximus) played Jor-El (Superman's dad) Connie Nielsen (Lucilla) played Queen Hippolyta (Wonder Woman's mom) and Joaquin Phoenix (Commodus) played The Joker. So in a certain point of view, this movie shows Superman's dad saving Wonder Woman's mom from The Joker.
That is amazing
How about another joke Murray
😂
friends of mine would just out of nowhere for years start laughing out of nowhere like Russell Crowe "you knew Marcus Aurelius?" Then I would turn around "I didn't say I knew him , I said he touched me on the shoulder once" we were a special breed lol
Lol that’s awesome
Me and my buddies on film sets do stuff like that. We'll pick a movie in the morning and throw quotes like that around all shoot. LoL
The actor playing Geoffrey ***modelled his entire character*** after the bad guy in Gladiator.
You were soo right when you said "this IS geoffrey"
it's better than geoffrey....it's the ***original geoffrey***
That is awesome. That explains so much about him then
this is one of those "perfect" movies. amazing story. amazing acting. it makes you laugh. it makes you cry. when someone says this is their favorite movies, you can see why. one of those movies that makes you rethink your top list of great movies.
It quickly got put in mine
I love how they portraited Marcus Aurelius in this movie. From what we know about him and from his personal notes 'Meditations' he was a solid guy. Not perfect but well aware of his weaknesses and trying to be a better man. My most belowed Emperor for sure. Also it is cool to read Meditations. Just think about it. personal thoughts and fears and moral insecurities of the most powerful man on Earth during his time almost 2 thousands years ago. He sure was not drunk by power as most of the rulers use to be.
I revisit Meditations every now and then. It is my firm belief that is should be required reading, among other important books.
"Frost sometimes it makes the blade stick." The look in his eyes when he says that is amazing!😁
You know old dude was shook when that happened
Not to mention the growl in his voice
We NEED a modern day Maximus, someone high up in the echelons of the power elites, someone that wants to bring their empire crashing down.
I cried my eyes out too; don't apologise for shedding tears at such a thing, it is a beautiful way we honour things that really matter to us.
JFK wanted ro
You got me tearing up at the end with you, man. That scene at the end, with Djimon Hounsou, always breaks me up too.
That was the nicest gesture I’ve ever seen in a movie. He kept them safe for him and then buried them for him. He was a good man
This is how you do reaction videos, with actual reaction and emotions, loved it.
Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
That's who he is, too, so I know the best part is it'll never change.
Quintus was actually the saving grace. His loyalty to Rome allowed him to stay close and be there when needed.
A digital body double was created for the remaining scenes involving actor Oliver Reed's character Proximo (the old gladiator) due to Reed's death during production. Reed died from a heart attack during a break from filming Gladiator in Valletta, Malta, on the afternoon of 2 May 1999. According to witnesses, he drank eight pints of German lager, a dozen shots of rum, half a bottle of whiskey and a few shots of Hennessy cognac, in a drinking match against a group of sailors on shore leave from HMS Cumberland at a local pub. His bar bill totaled a little over 270 Maltese lira (almost 450 GBP; about 590 USD). After beating five much younger Royal Navy sailors at arm-wrestling, Reed suddenly collapsed, dying while en route to hospital in an ambulance. He was 61 years old
Sad thing is I think I could best him at 35 but I fear I'll end up the same way.
Oliver Reed and Richard Harris were some baaaad men, I would have very much liked to have drank a pint or ten with both of them, listen to their anecdotes for days.
This movie will make any grown man cry.
Another good Ridley Scott-directed medieval epic that I think is often overlooked, is 'Kingdom of Heaven' from 2005 with Orlando Bloom and Liam Neeson.
Pretty sure it's on his watch list. Have to double check.
Yes this would be another good one to see JLs reaction to, if you do please watch the directors cut
@@EOMReacts
The director’s cut really makes all the difference. It’s about 40 minutes longer (2.5 hours vs 3 and some change), but it might be the biggest difference in quality between a theatrical & extended cut of any movie.
The theatrical is a solid medieval action movie, but the extended really makes everything work much better and turns it into an all time classic
"Quit touching it!" You made me laugh so hard that tears ran. I love watching your reactions because you are a great judge of character. You see them for what they are, good or bad, right away.
Lol glad you enjoyed and thank you for the compliment

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations.
“Quit touching it!!” Lmfao
He was just digging in it
Everytime Juaquin Pheonix was on screen "Fuck you" "Bitch" . You are the best lol. I think your pups are used to you reacting. They are less concerned when you have a scare

“We got a bitch-ass to kill first”. That was damn funny.
I'm from Germany and this is my first video that I watch from your channel... but.. respect for this honest reaction. I had tears in my eyes when I first saw it. It's a great movie.
Much appreciated and welcome!
Joaquin Phoenix performance as Commodus is one of the most underrated villain performances, the man didn't even get an Oscar nomination. You might be surprised but Rome actually had a VERY bloody history of politics and even Ceasars, Pretorian Guard often played a role in it. I highly recommend watching "Brave Heart" in the future, another mans movie.
I don’t know how he didn’t get nominated for this because he was amazing in it. I’m have to look up to see who won it and who was nominated bc that blows my mind
"There was a dream that was Rome." There is so much to love in this film.
The cape is underrated. A true gentleman sports an emperor cape.

Those are some great lines
i adoted the best boy, a bullmastiff mix about 11 years ago (passed in 2019). his adoption papers read as "new name: maximus decimus meridius" and he 100000% lived up to the name. 😂🥰
That's awesome. LoL
This movie breaks me everytime at the end. The beautiful music, him going to his family....wow.
It’s perfect
Caesar Marcus Aurelius (the gathering the beginning) was the last of "The Five Good Emperors" and is also considered the first of the stoic philosophers. His death lead to the end of the Pax Romana a time of relative peace and great prosperity of the Roman empire.
Two of his most famous quotes are "waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one"
"You have power over your mind- not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength."
Both are exemplified in this movie
The ending and his family dying always break me down to crying. The musical score is fantastic and the acting is amazing. I saw this in theaters, such a beloved movie. Love your reactions.
Glad you enjoyed and I agree with you. This is a beautiful movie
It's crazy how he was the general of the army now he's " QUIT TOUCHING IT! "...
🤣🤣🤣
Gladiator was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won 5 including Crowe for Best Actor and Best Picture. Phoenix was nominated for Best Supporting Actor and didn't win but should have in my opinion. He played evil like no other villain. It was considered his break thru acting performance. As much as you loved this movie (me too), you'd love The Last Samurai.
Joaquin and his brother River both amazing actors.
@24:20, even as beat down as he is right now, Maximus is still true to himself. He is a man born to lead other men into war. He knows he and these guys are about to die. So he falls back on his training and pulls these rag tags into a unit.
Damn you can see why his men loved him. Also it’s a quick bit of dialogue but one of the gladiators used to serve with him. He knew his general and spoke up.
This is the only film I watched in the theater more than once back in 2000. I went back the next day and then a few weeks later. It won multiple Oscar’s including best actor for Russel Crowe. Joaquin Phoenix was nominated for best supporting I think he should have won. Ridley Scott was nominated for Best Director and he should have won. I think they both lost to “Traffic”.
Joaquin deserved an Oscar for this. They robbed him if they didn’t give it to him. I’ve never been this mad at a character before in my life.
34:24 min. "Oh, he's cheating on his wife".
And exactly at that moment, your dog illustrate what Maximus should've done
instead of cheating!
:)
🤣🤣🤣
Two things: I loved how you said "From now on, we calling him 'Bitch Ass'. " I about died laughing, because you kept to your word on that!!! The soundtrack for this movie is one of the most beautiful soundtracks I've ever heard. Hans Zimmer scored it so well, and Lisa Gerrard's vocals at the end on "Now We Are Free" are absolutely beautiful.
🤣🤣🤣 I have killed him that since this reaction. I refuse to say his name. And I agree 100% about the music
Another great movie and reaction! The only thing they messed up on was having a German Shepherd as the dog in the beginning of the movie. They should’ve used a Cane Corso (Italian Mastiff) as those were the actual dogs of war the Romans used back in the day. That’s what you should get as your next pup, J. They are such amazing animals! And you can’t go wrong with a Cane Corso named Maximus, lol.
Lol I would love one but it wouldn’t fit in my apartment
I was fortunate enough to stay in Rome once. Had an Airbnb about a quarter mile away from the colosseum. I woke up early and live-streamed the sunrise. I was on the same road as the colosseum. It’s one of those things I’ll never forget. It was fascinating walking through the same locations as I’ve read about in history. Florence, Italy is seriously one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. When you watch Braveheart (eventually). Much was filmed in Ireland (which is beautiful) but I’d based in the highlands of Scotland. I got to spend time in the Isle of Skye. Was the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. Spend your time and money on travel…you’ll never regret it. Good energies my friend.
I love Florence too! Enjoyed Rome but all the diseased cats at the Coliseum killed it for me😢. Love your description of driving up
to it though!
@@TheDivayenta if you get to go back, check out palazzo pitti. The gardens alone are worth it. And to clarify, we were so close (in Rome) that I WALKED to the coliseum. I had lunch in the Piazza della Signoria in Florence and just marveled at how lucky I was.
@@danjohnson2986 same! When I saw David, I was transported and heard Bach’s “ Air On the G String” in my head.
I still remember when I watched this movie for the first time 20+ years ago, that opening scene is still the best in cinematic history...
The reason you admire Maximus so much is because you are very much like him. You are good & honorable & know the importance of family like him. Both of you recognize & despise corruption & cowardice. Plus you both love your dogs.
Thank you for that 🙏🏾
Best part is when he turns to Caesar and says who he is. Gives me goosebumps. If I had a boy I wanted to name him Maximus because of this movie.
You can't rule and be afraid of the dark! 🤣😅😂🤣😆😆
I’m just saying how you going to lead and you need a night light
lol "they had a Joffrey. You don't want a Joffrey".
Too right.
This is one of the saddest, beautiful endings ever. None of us can hold it together. Great reaction!!!
You’re 100% correct about the ending. Thank you, glad you enjoyed
"Give the people bread and circuses, and they will never revolt."
It should be some consolation that in real life, Maximus' wife did much better than in the film. She married director Ridley Scott in 2015.
Some other masterpieces Heat, The Last Samurai, Legends of the Fall, JFK, The Thin Red Line, Glory
All are on his watch list.
When Quintus said to Maximus “people should know when they are conquered” and Maximus replied with “Would you Quintus? Would I?” That is what the movie is all about.
Also when Proximo died the actor died earlier in filming so they took footage from earlier before Maximus fought the guy with the gold mask. And because the actor died they also changed the ending to what we got but what was planned was Proximo burying his rudius symbolizing Maximus won freedom.
Bro that's a real heart reaction, pure respect.
Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed
I dated a German girl in the 90's (still friends with her) so I knew what the German Barbarian leader was saying in the opening scene. One of the best acted films from main characters to bit characters ever.
also i kinda wish they brought back gladiator's back but for criminals who are murders and have been 100% proven to have killed someone or multiple people and they have a death sentence so instead of putting them down like a dog we put them up against other cold blooded murders and which ever survives will live to fight another day plus most will end up dying eventually so justice will be served and we could get some entertainment from it
This and Braveheart are two of the best stylized movies of this type. Nice react.

Isnt it amazing that these type of films speak so universally to our soul. All of us shed heavy tears at this ending. ALL of us. Theres something deep within us all that is stirred. The story of Gladiator, in other words, tells us something deeply true that we all feel, in our soul.
@35:40, heck yeah. Dude had the beginnings of a small army right there. He could have been like Spartacus.
16:50 you'd bet wrong....gladiator fights to the death didn't happen that often, mostly on special ocasions. Lanistas had to much money invested in buying, feeding, housing and training their gladiators. They were the superstars of the time, with merchandising being sold just like today...gladiators and chariot racers.
I was meaning today if they did the thumbs up or thumbs down they wouldn’t let anybody live today

Man, watching you tear up at the end there, I started tearing up. You are a beautiful beautiful man, J! A testament to just HOW good Hans Zimmer is, is when he was doing the soundtrack, at some point he said "this needs some Lisa Gerrard", and honestly, it is one of those tracks that can really make you tear up. Great reaction! I love this movie. It began my great admiration for Russell Crowe as an actor. This was when he was simply incapable of making a bad movie. In fact, he was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar three years in a row (a very rare thing) for The Insider (1999), Gladiator (2000), which he won, and A Beautiful Mind (2001). When he’s good, he’s great.
Other notable Russell Crowe movies are L.A. Confidential, Cinderella Man, Master and Commander: Far Side of the World, and 3:10 To Yuma (2007’s remake). All of them are great films.
Most of those are on his list, and LA Confidential is on an upcoming Patreon poll, so it may show up sooner rather than later. Stoked to see him watch it.
@@EOMReacts Fantastic! Look forward to watching!
Master and Commander is 10/10 for me just like this film.
grew up watching this movie and wish they had done what romans actually did cause the thumbs up part is wrong it should have been a thumbs down because that means good and thumbs up means bad that way it would be historically accurate the director only did it since now a days thumbs up means good and thumbs down is bad for our modern civilization so the director did it our way so we wouldn't be confused by it and question it which was wrong to do should have done it the way the romans did but i love it. And also this is like one of the rare movies that the actor Djimon Hounsou character doesn't die in cause like most of his characters he plays in movies 95% of the time ends up dying
Great reaction to a powerful film. Strength and Honor.

When the Academy Awards came around, the Academy didn't want to credit Lisa Gerrard (the woman who sings on several tracks and co-wrote more than a few of the themes with Hans Zimmer) or Klaus Badelt (another co-composer) due to old rules - while the movie never got the award, it's generally considered that Zimmer criticizing the Academy over this is why they didn't win.
