I’m a new teacher and I don’t like my job because every day I have some students that challenge me, thinking I’m their biggest enemy. My job places a huge emphasis on bribing children to ensure that they do what their supposed to do such as not hitting , listening and following instructions. I get terrified every day returning to work
Hello! I’m a TA and i’ve definitely found that consistent consequences (time outs or missing a few minutes of playtime) after one verbal warning (explain that hitting is not acceptable behaviour and if they do it again they will be missing playtime etc) definitely helps. I really fine verbal warnings and then time outs a helpful method of keeping the rules clear and boundaries very firm

Here’s some actual practical advice- get out of teaching now. It is the single biggest mistake in life you could have made.
If you haven’t had lies made about you or contemplated existence at least twice in your first 6 months then you ain’t teaching. You made a mistake thinking you’d become a teacher. Learn. Grow and get out

I have a question: I have a small class of 4-5 year olds, who I'm teaching once weekly. We do art lessons. There is one child who keeps on needing special attention: when I don't give him the attention he wants, he will simply run out of the classroom. Today I had a difficult situation where the kid had run out, but I cannot go out looking for him, because then all the other little children will run out as well and chaos will ensue. I had to wait for another teacher to find him and bring him back to class which the said teacher of course was not happy with. How do I prevent from such situations from happening? I have no way to lock the classroom door.
May I ask what special attention he needs and what attention he wants? Is he telling you what he wants/needs? Inappropriately? If he is asking inappropriately, you can simply get to his level and let him know that you heard him, but you have to help his friends as well. You can use "if, then.." so if/when he completes a portion or simply waits or does whatever he is capable of, then you will be able to come over and help or check on him. Without knowing more specific details, these are a couple strategies off top of my head, but if you were to give me more specific information and how you know what he is looking for (attention), how he is looking for it (behavior) and why you think he needs or wants your attention (is the task too difficult, is he bored, is he demanding attention to take away from other children, or does he/she have sensory issues perhaps that can get overwhelming?). Without knowing and assessing why, unfortunately an assumption can be made if intervention doesn't match the function and teach new ways to either get attention, or tolerate a sensory issue, or wait, or engage in more opportunities to practice skills that may be weak and he is feeling embarrassed or inadequate. All these things matter. I am a behavioral consultant with over 20 years of working in preschool inclusive environments. I have helped numerous teachers deal with the behaviors of other children in the classroom who needed some guidance or access to reinforcement or praise.

I'm teaching Math in English in a non-English speaking class.. Well, there are a few who understands English but most of them don't.. It's so difficult to keep them from moving around and from making noise.. They tend to get another child's attention and do mischief together until everyone is not listening to the topic / not doing the activity..
