2023 DIY Southwest Colorado Elk hunt

- Elk Hunting Southwest Colorado third rifle season DIY with over the counter tags on public land. The elk have been hunted for basically two month by this season so they are on their guard and in their hide outs.
Week long Elk Hunt in the South San Juan Wilderness of Colorado. We got some timely snow that put the elk on the move and we came home. One bull played cat and mouse with us for 6 days.

Thanks Adam. We started this back in 1997 and maybe in another 20 years, or so, we will get it just the way we want it. ;)
I got on some elk last year above Pagosa Springs. Got snowed in a few times. My wife's jeep blew a gasket, and that made it tough to hunt because I had to get that to Goodyear for repairs. We rented a cabin for 2 weeks. It was a nice time, but I will camp solo next time. No wife and dogs.
Lots of elk around Pagosa Springs. If you catch the weather right it can be great. Snow will get em on the move. Jeep problems, I've had a few of those over the years. All part of the adventure I guess

Could very well be. We've been going 3rd season for about 12 years this same area. Been doing the annual hunt since 1997. Good luck this year!
@@manartcreations7342 thanks! You as well! I think my dad and uncles have been going for around 12-15 years now. This will be my 4th time up there. Me and my brother each got a bull last year out of the same herd. We lucked out and they were standing side by side when we shot them. Was pretty exciting
That's awesome. And, it's a memory you'll always have with your brother. My dad and I had that opportunity about 5 years ago but his hearing is so bad I couldn't get him to understand which bull to shoot. So, I got one and he just watched his walk off into the trees.
How many of you in the group
Hey Charles,
We have anywhere from 5 to 12 depending on the year and everybody's shedules. This trip we had 8 in the group. This year we have 10 going. Trying a different area, so it will be mostly a learning process all over again.
Keep trying man
We'll be back this fall. Drew a Cow Elk tag this year. It took 6 points as a nonresident. Always a great time whether I harvest or not.
