You rock, 10/10, no notes. Just an exceptional presentation. Feel Emma is a chessmaster, and I'm struggling to see the game she's actually playing. And I get frustrated when she shuts any questions near tactics in press conferences - but i understand. Glad to have you here.
I'm putting a lot of value on snippets I hear at the press conferences, maybe too much, we'll see. But Emma's so forthcoming with what she's seeing in other teams, and so opaque about what her team is doing tactically that I feel like there's this level of analysis and preparation that's impossible to see on the film.
@@BusyWatchingWomensSoccer With all of the low block drama around the USWNT, I always heard the principle to defeat it recited "overload, to isolate" - with a lot of handwaving as to how that is actually done. You showed me some examples of that principle in action in this video.
I caught your Into The Channel episode right before this where I was wondering, I wonder what everyone thought of the CR game (I know you recorded it before the match). And now I know! I definitely thought this game had an "Emma is holding her cards tightly" feel to it. Even though I cannot analyze the game as throughly as you do, I noticed better plays developing. They seemed to have more complicated--and successful--passing than I've seen before from the team, and the switching roles was noticable and impressive. I'm excited to see what happens, and I'm hopeful we get to a medal game. We'll see which one 😅
It’s so nice to hear you checked both videos out together. A lot of my analysis is just watching enough film to double check my gut feel, I think you’re right on with yours about the passing!
Awesome video as usual. Love using Emma’s words as the key to illustrating the structure. In my view, with Cat out, Emma lost her on field translator, point guard and secret ingredient in terms of having a 10 that is comfortable turning Emma’s concepts and thoughts into magical final third chances. Pity we won’t see that this time and a hard loss for Emma as a coach, but you go with who is available. With Cat out and Rose resting, I too thought Emma went without a 10 ( not ready to give Shaw the ball yet it seems) making Swanson more of a false 9, keeping Smith at 9 and using the two midfielders as stretched 8s. The problem with playing Swanson deep is that she is her most lethal and transition but wasn’t as available in the role as a false 9 playing deeper. This is shame because at her best Swanson is almost as frightening as Sam Kerr in transition. I like the movement against Costa Rica but thought we got anxious when shooting or didn’t actually look at goal before shooting ( head down is not a great soccer look), and not enough of our runs were creative (Swanson is brilliant at this and I feel Smith can get the ball to a cutting Swanson if she is looking to get the ball there). Also, with Nighswonger resting, the left side was not as available for offensive operation which I don’t think will be the case in France. Lastly, I cannot wait to see our set pieces unveiled so you can rock a video on them. 😉 LOL.
Swanson being too deep to work in transition is a great explanation for what I don't think I liked about how she was used. It took some of the magic out of her game for sure. The number of players taking touches in key areas with their head down is very high on my list of complaints, I know it won't get cleaned up completely but just a few more head up moments would help. Here's hoping for some great set pieces, I'd love to try breakdown something tricky!
good content, glad to see some advanced analysis. makes sense, pulling back the curtain a little on Hayes. You could do an entire other vid on that match with the poor finishing. Ladies were quite unlucky on the day, should get sharper as the Olympics progress.
interesting - US had 80% possession w/ 16 corner kicks -------- especially with the 0 strategic/tactical ability to convert corner kicks that shows that US is might be actually trying to put in a system which will then be utilized in Olympic play --- good idea ---- friendlies are for decoy and to try certain, not all, the plans. i think you are right - it takes just a lot of practice to have set pieces work. plus 26 shots, 12 on-goal the shots also however show the lack of final third success --- i think this is chemisty from pllaying together - the touches are not 'intuitive' some not flowing together and some double-touches. I looked back at some of Spain's games before the 2023 world cup and noted the constant refrain from some commentators about how Spain with 80% possession and great tacticscouldn't execute in the final third. Of course the youth teams in Spain have been generating amazing talent for a dozen years ---- along w/ the inability to properly fund and train their women (another story).
@@BusyWatchingWomensSoccer yep - don't want the lack of finishing onus to become a video ROTPL also, obviously i thought your analysis of the corner kick and the CRC friendly in the context of trainig to play in the olymics is astute.
@@kevinkanter2537 Bingo on intuition and the double touches in the final third, I see moments on film so often where one player is moving into our out of a space but without another player reciprocating in movement. A lot of work going wasted, I'd be curious to know the average number of touches in buildup for those 12 on goal.
spot on! and also Swanson as the 9 is a fake one/false one cause the actual striker is imho Smith.... so Smith arrives at the box or on top of the box, swamson floats around as the false 9, Horan box to box/poacher/target man.... its actually a decent 0-0 game, theyre dynamic enough to find gaps in Costa Ricas defense i think this team could really play great football, its exciting
That's a great explanation and clears up what exactly Smith is supposed to be doing. And great shout on finding the gaps, they certainly did. The next step for them is moving the gaps.
@@BusyWatchingWomensSoccer thanks! and thank you for explaining how the team sets up to stop the counter at source too! nailed it, a lot of people missed that fact.... and i completely agree with u, the goals will come keep slayin!
the players are certainly working. they werent out there dogging it. along with that, i see Albert open, a lot, creating chances, good passing, not getting the ball much. dont know if thats by design, or some players around her are voting her off the island by not involving her. great breakdown as always. looking forward to the Olympic breakdowns. good vibes 2 u 🙂
I don’t agree with you about some players around her are voting her of the island by not involving her, these women won’t to win, I’m thinking they are that petty.
I think the tribe has not yet spoken! I'm seeing the same thing with Albert, I think some of it may be a little hesitancy to pass but I think most of it is chemistry/communication. She's constantly rotating in and out of great spots and I don't think some of her teammates read the game quite as fast as her. Good vibes always!
@@BusyWatchingWomensSoccer yes I’m will to give players the benefit of doubt they can place themselves above personal feelings if that’s even an issue.
Love that you highlighted that office Horan goal, having a midfielder like Albert willing to cover for the left back might be essential with how high they typically push nighswonger. With Zambia’s counter threat im curious how Emma will approach the fullbacks… will she be afraid of nighswonger getting burned and maybe even opt for Krueger
Oh I'm so curious for the Zambia lineup, team looked a little less lethal without the left foot crosses from Nighswonger but I think Krueger might be needed. Lavelle, Williams, and Krueger I'd love to see start to bring some speed and lock the edges.
Nice breakdown, thanks! I agree Emma is playing some cards pretty close to the vest. That, combined with this still being pretty early stages of this team's evolution and I think we haven't seen anything close to what this team can do. Interesting note on the 10, which I think is an endangered species across the soccer world. A true 10 almost needs to be a generational player, and there are few players now, men or women, who can play that position as it's meant to be played. Having said that, the USWNT has a couple of players who COULD play the 10, foremost is injured Cat Maccario. Swanson is next closest followed by Jaedyn Shaw who is still developing the full set of 10 skills. That's a wealth of 10s, but almost not necessary in the Hayes fluid style of play, where multiple players at any given moment can perform as an 8, a 10, a 9, or on the wings. That's pretty new in the women's game (and men's!) and is very hard to defend. Now need to work on finishing!
Oh I love that take, the 10 as an endangered species. There's so many players with great elements of it but so few with the complete skillset. I'd add Croix Bethune to your list as a down the line option, my question is if Hayes can really turn her into that centerpiece 10 in the future. The standards Hayes is setting with positional fluidity is crazy high, I really think it's a good showing for just a few training sessions working on it.
What a great framing for a video. I loved this! I also hope you're right re: why the corners were so bad - I was sitting behind the Costa Rica goal for the 2nd half and it was soooo frustrating to watch as a fan. I don't think I've ever had a fan experience quite like that, just an endless loop of "oh maybe this time--! oh, no, nevermind" on repeat for forty-five straight minutes. While I think the secrecy explanation might be correct for set pieces specifically, I don't think it can justify personnel decisions. Like you can't start Horan at the 10 because your actual preferred starter (when Lavelle is unavailable) is Shaw. So I think Emma must prefer Horan (or Horan+Albert as dual 8s, which feels like an easier sell when you spent three quarters of the game in your opponents attacking third). My personal depth chart at the 10 goes Macario > Lavelle > Bethune/Shaw > Horan, so not seeing Shaw play when Lavelle got scratched was a big disappointment. You were great on Into the Channel btw!
Glad to hear Into the Channel was good! I can't even imagine being at that game, I think I'd want them to stop taking corners after the first half. Emma Hayes is definitely not considering the fan experience, I'd like to think that's the sign of a committed coach! You and Emma definitely have the same depth chart until after Lavelle, after that I'm not sure. I think Lavelle and Horan start against Zambia, they need Lavelle's speed. A Horan sub may be needed early, I'm very curious to see if that's Albert or Shaw.
😅 glad emma was saying tactics she actually uses in that video--i may have thought it was just her spewing terms to try to impress the audience when i heard it, lmao. and love the corner kick analysis. i think, for my nerves heading into the olympics, i'm just going to consider everything that's gone wrong so far a secret plan by emma hayes to surprise teams at the olympics. still kinda terrified by the #10 thing though. hope rose is healthy and that if she isn't, they take a risk and put jaedyn or even croix there...i don't think either korbin or lindsey are creative enough on the playmaking front for the two of them together to make the role unnecessary. or maybe i just have ptsd from watching angel city seemingly play without a 10 every other game this season? 🤔
Rose is hopefully the obvious fix to the lack of #10, but I'd love to see the roster expanded and Croix get some playing time there, she 100% has that type of creativity. I think you just diagnosed ACFC's whole problem - now why won't they fix it?!
Your point that perhaps the team is playing without a 10 was so very interesting. I assumed Horan was doing that. But perhaps not. I agree that the rotation at the top was good. That said, I think Shaw would improve the approach. I look forward to you next analysis.
I wonder if Hayes is trying to find her Guro Reiten type player on the USWNT. Reiten plays for Chelsea and is absurdly accurate with passes into the box and across face of goal, plus she takes the corner kicks. I just don't see anyone on the USWNT team with Reiten's level of accuracy atm.
none of the forwards fit the bill sadly, except Shaw. Albert certainly plays like that, although shes in midfield and im not sure about her crossing. passing is spot on though.
I'm guessing that was the plan with Macario, lovely corner delivery and great range to her passing although definitely not as accurate as Reiten. Rodman or Girma might win on long ball accuracy for me, I'd love to see them take a corner or two so I can mentally cross them off as options. It's definitely a hole in the roster.
Great analysis, but I hope we won't be humbled by the poor quality of set pieces at the Olympics since it was one of the signature elements during Vlatko's era. In a way, Lindsey could occasionally work as a Wambach-esque striker, but who's going to set her up with the crosses?
In my wildest dreams, Emma Hayes asked for bad delivery on purpose for some extra disguise. Realistically, that's where I'm worried, they can roll out different concepts but the ball still needs to come in well. I'd kind of like to see Rodman get a shot here, I know she's a good presence in the box but I really like her cross delivery, her balls are inviting.

I'm definitely hoping for a lot of things to come together but I do think Hayes is a special coach and even if the result isn't there this time it will be in the future. There should be some good moments for the US at the tournament regardless, it's just if there's enough of them.
