Great video , fantastic to compare all those Gretsch guitars cause now they fall under the Fender factory they make so much different models that you don't know what the difference is between all those models ; I like also the dry humor those guys have in this video. I enjoyed it very much !!! Good job guys !!!
Thank you SO MUCH for playing the exact same riff through all those models at the beginning, and intercutting them so the differences really stand out.
This was a blown opportunity to properly compare the 10 guitars. By using an overdrive, you have effectively colored all the guitar tones so they sound more-or-less exactly the same. I own 4 Gretsches, including a 6136T-LDS, a 6120SHATV and a 5420T, and they are very different sounding guitars, with different pickups, bodies, bracing and circuits. I'll bet that if you play a Telecaster or Strat through that overdrive + amp rig, you won't sound like a Telecaster or Strat! Please do the comparison again, this time with no pedals at all.
+Larry Lion but guess what? They use a Fender amp, which effectively colors the guitar tone as well. Shame. Next time, they sould put a mic inside the guitars' hollow bodies, no amps, no pedals.
Everybody always ignores the 6122TFM Country Gentleman. My favorite model. I own one. It is an incredible instrument. Most often I play a Music Man Silhouette because it is easy to have it sitting by my chair in the living room so anytime I feel like playing it is right next to me. A nice compact versatile guitar but I often take my gorgeous Country Gentleman to gigs. It is very flashy and tonally versatile. I play jamming electric bluegrass style rock'n'roll and some rockabilly too. My Silhouettes work very well too but my arch top guitar have a richness not found in a solid body. I also use a Guild Starfire V Bigsby.
@@michaelwertzy9808 yeah I know that one i was about to get one too in black, but Gretsch discontinued this model with the 3 Filtertrons, now the present G5622T isn't that nice anymore. ,
I believe the comparisons, all with the same level of distortion, was EXACTLY the right way to show the difference in the models.... the only helpful addition would have been to follow that with the same comparison with the same level of clean tone for all the models too. ( not dry...but with a little reverb, chorus, whatever...just to give us an equal tone comparison, clean.)
Johan, you don't need to apologise to anyone, this is great... there's plenty of chicken pickin and rockabilly Gretsch demos. This is great to hear the guitars played like this, whoever says Gretsch are meant to be played clean is talking nonsense. They're meant to be played however you damn well want! Chicken pickin's cool so is rock. I love it all
This is a fantastic video! Really nice to see the guitars being played back to back like that, great editing! A little less distortion next time would be nice, but I think we can all get a very good impression of each model. Another thing I really like is to hear what the guitar sounds like without an amp at all. However, sadly all I know now is that I want them all :( Would love to see more Gretsch videos.
They all sound good, so I guess we do not have to spend too much money to get one of the lower end Gretsches, thanks for doing that you just saved me money.
I recently got a hold of a double anniversary and realized how great the low output Hilo’s are. This video makes them sound thin and reedy, which if you setup your rig the same way you do for Filters, they will be. But dial them in right, and they are just the greatest pickups. They have that real Gretsch clarity with a nice woody tone. Maybe not great for high gain, but with a boost pedal they will give you some magical drive. And they sound incredible clean.
i hate people that are so close minded to say that any guitar is only made for one genre. That's like saying you can't use a jazzmaster for anything other than jazz, since that's what it was MADE for. Ignorant. And if you really think they all sound the same, and that you can only hear the difference with a clean tone, you need to grow some ears. Nice video!
3,1,2 were the best to my ears. 4 was surprisingly the worst which sounded like a thin tin can but the nicest looking out of all 10. I also love the fact that you added a little dirt to the sound for this shootout in particular. Exactly what I wanted to hear. There are 101 clean sounding finger picking videos for Gretsch guitars on UA-cam for the complainers below. In its simplest form, guitars were "made" to be played. Rock on brother!
Nice work Simon! The Korean Gretsches have come a long way with those blacktop pickup upgrades.I might as add the Chinese Electromatic projets too..Great job as always Johan!..Love your posts they always confirm that I'm not crazy at own high end to mid end to low-end gear..Well done my friend..Johan, you should do a spot on the Peerless guitar factory who btw manufacture those Korean Gretschs .They also did the Epiphone line in archtops and semis from 93 to 95 I believe.
Johan Segeborn I have 3 of their own models ..One Retromatic which I know you will dig and 2 thin line Wizards 3 p90 equipped they look like Gibson ES-350 or a switchmaster
So what's the difference between the two G5422s? Those have my favorite tone, but 9 seems to have more bite than 7. I prefer the tone of 9 so I was hoping to get one just like it.
Great shoot-out! Very level playing field.I used to have an original '62 Double Anniversary back in the '80's looked just like the one in your vid. Loved that guitar; looked great, played great but I never thought the sound was anything to write home about so sold it. I often wonder whether I did the right thing but your vid confirms that I did! To me the Anni is probably the weakest sounding out of the group (I now know that they were fitted with very low output pick-ups). I have now got a 2013 6120am and it's a real beaut; everything a Gretsch should be. Thanks for the vid! Takk!
To everyone commenting "less distortion!": I would direct you to literally every other Gretsch demo on youtube. Seems like this is the ONLY one that's not a guy in a western shirt pretending to be Chet.
Yes the tone is coloured with the overdrive but i still heard a difference between each one since the pickups are different, most were hallow, there was a few semi hallow & a solid body, Tone changes when it goes from type of construction. I guess my order of preference 9, 1, 6, 2, 5, 10, 8, 7, 3 & 4. Good video nonetheless!
I am looking for a video which explains the different Gretsch guitar models. I can hardly tell the differences amongst these 10 models. Its also not a good demo of the Gretsch "sound". This stuff could be played on any electric guitar. Whats the point?
I think gretsch hollow/semi hollow are the best looking guitars out there.....but pretty expensive. I'm gonna get myself 1 of the new Streamliner model hollow body with bigsby, great price at about £430. I just love that growling attitude of gretsch guitars, and it'd be nice to have alongside my les paul & teles for when I feel like playing something different, then i think my guitar collection will be complete ✌
Watching this a year later, I'd forgotten that I commented on this video. Well about 2 months ago I finally got the Gretsch guitar I've been promising myself for the last couple of years......But it didn't quite go as I planned 😆 I had got the money in my bank account and was ready to pull the trigger on a Streamliner, then I saw the most stunning silver sparkle Gretsch G5126 - Which I think is now discontinued. But basically it's the same kind of size as a G6120, equipped with the single coil de'Armond dynasonics, along with £400-£500 of upgrades and a fitted hard case, it was basically in mint condition with not a scratch on it..... So, as soon as I saw it I had my heart set on it but there was a problem, it was £250 more than my Streamliner budget would allow 😢 ......... But after some negotiating we came to a deal. And, well f@*k me, it's the nicest looking, sweetest sounding guitar I've ever held, and 2 months after buying it I have hardly put it down and play it all the time. I wanted a single coil guitar but I can't stand Strats, and I already have 2 Telecasters, a Deluxe and a La Cabronita, so didn't want another Tele, so it's perfect for my needs........So the moral of the story? Good things come to he who waits ! 🙂
More meaningful than the guitar model would be to mention which pickups are in each. For example, you can see if it's a Filtertron, but that doesn't narrow down if it's stock or a TV Jones, etc.
WRONG!!! You can get dozens of clean comparisons but not with distortion. If you want something to do more than rockabilly and Chet this is a GREAT video.
great demo! thanks! really helped me out making a decision upon one of the models (5422). Have a quick question if you have the time. Just wanted to know what amp set up you using here? Thanks in advance!
+Michael freeman Hi we used a Sweet Honey Overdrive to push the Bassman RI. Am afraid I don't remember the exact EQ settings. Glad you like the demo! Cheers Johan
Well, the first five wereall incredible, the following not as much so I'll skip those.. Panther sound surprisingly well, though that 6120 is the fucking best... I though that my favourite would be the Falcon but it sounded clearer than the other... The vintage Annyversary is great for slide and those, sure, due to its singlecoilness lo-fi of those old pups... and that Jet just wants to rock! My vote for 6120 and Falcon (the Panther is great but the center block just steals some Gretschiness to the sound! As all your videos, extremely cool Johan, I've finally bought a 1979 JMP 2204 with their help! Cheers from Catalunya.
I would like to hear them in some smooth jazz licks..compressed with a little bit of a delay/reverb blend. I can hear some feedback whistle @ some models
evaluating guitars through distortion is like tasting food when drunk, good fun but pointless. Gretches are famed for use by Brian Jones, George Harrison, Steve Stills and David Crosby. shame this was a missed chance to hear what they actually sound like
I got that same amp,, well before it was a reissue. Got to say man, they all sound the same that distorted, so who cares ha ha...... but whale away. Actually the only one you can tell a dif on is the double an 68.
All I can hear is the the Distortion / overdrive..🙄. Kills any Gretsch tone and character. Lets hear them pure and unadulterated And something sweet from front pickup
The truth: gretsch guitars rocked up (not as in this video but) like in 1950's USA sounded so great, the FEDS imprisoned, deported and murdered to silence players. The campaign against rockabilly lasted from 1958 till 1963.
That's EXACTLY what I was looking for: how those guitars would sound overdriven! Thanks a lot!
Damned overdrive !
All of them sound almost the same...
The amp and pedal sound great. Some clean sounds will tell us how the guitars sound.
Bill Mcdonald Thanks Bill
Great video , fantastic to compare all those Gretsch guitars cause now they fall under the Fender factory they make so much different models that you don't know what the difference is between all those models ; I like also the dry humor those guys have in this video.
I enjoyed it very much !!! Good job guys !!!
Let's overdrive, that way we can hear the differences
literally pointless

Larry Lion Hi Larry, You're right of course but on my UA-cam Channel we look at 70s hard rock tones. I should have labeled the video better. Cheers
+Larry Lion but guess what? They use a Fender amp, which effectively colors the guitar tone as well. Shame. Next time, they sould put a mic inside the guitars' hollow bodies, no amps, no pedals.

those don't sound the same to the people looking for this kinda tone
Thanks David Bennett. I got more info from your comment than video.
This is one of the videos that made me buy my G5420T
5622T! 3 pu's, Georgia green. Cat-eyes! She's my boss

That panther sounds phenomenal!
Great comparison. Exactly the tone that I wanted to hear! Thanks for this! Great playing too
thanks. Now I know I can't live without a Silver Falcon. GAS engaged.
I always end up playing 5622 CB at Guitar Center. To me it has such a balanced tone. Hearty but not too thick. Great guitar demo!

AC/DC riff on 10 Gretsches...I'm in heaven!
Everybody ignores the best Gretsch. The 6122TFM "Country Gentleman" is by far the very best model in my opinion.
Chet atkins!

They all sounded good -I was amazed at how Tele-like the Double Anniversary was in this setup.
The White Panther was my favorite.
They all sound good, so I guess we do not have to spend too much money to get one of the lower end Gretsches, thanks for doing that you just saved me money.
Thumbs up for playing these guitars with overdrive! Haters gonna hate! Just let 'em! My favorite was the 6120 :D
Great video !! Just what I needed

Thanks gentlemen.
Great video, man. Made me even more confident to buy a Gretsch G5422TG Electromatic.
+Haig Berberian Jr. Glad to hear it!
Haig Berberian Jr. Me to, actually have One comming My way in a few days. Getting excited indeed. Enjoying yours i take it?
I like the Gretsch Sound - period. That said, IMO, the only real discernable dif was that the fatter the body, the warmer the tone. Love the Duo Jets.
i just order a gretsch 5420 from a music store in sthlm. I just got to have one. Great demo as always. cheers
+Tommy Andersson Thanks Tommy! Hope you'll like it! Cheers

I really like the tone here! Although most people prefer these guitars clean...I think they sound awesome with a little gain, ala Malcolm Young.
[Sigh.] Read an interview with Malcolm. He always hated that people thought he played through distortion. He played clean and hard.
why use the overdrive? I want to hear the guitar not the effect .
Vilket jäkla trångsynt gnäll i denna tråd. Great(sch) job! 👍Det är ju en massa skillnad på gitarrerna...
You 're crazy man!!! :D
Very great video....I've the 5422 and I love it!!!
Cheers
Thanks! Yeah, great guitar and value. And I'll let Simon know that he's crazy. He won't be shocked. :-) Cheers Johan
Does the 5422 handle higher gain well like in the video, or is it really circumstantial?
So what's the difference between the two G5422s? Those have my favorite tone, but 9 seems to have more bite than 7. I prefer the tone of 9 so I was hoping to get one just like it.
The #4 sounds very different from all the others. All these guitars are good for the eyes, the ears... Very nice brand. Thanks !
Thanks Eric!

fantastic guitars! can you do one with the same guitars but playing rockabilly and some jangly stuff?
+le tigre Thanks, If we can gather the guitars again we will!
# 7 and # 8 had nice twang old time feeling. Many of the others sounded harsh and plastic
I always went for the Falcons but I really like much more the Chet Atkins in this one

Wow fucking riff was cool, I think my favourite was the Gretsch G6120.
+Yosafhat Cuellar Thanks!
#9 for me ! :)
Got an Atkins super axe in there anywhere?
If Rollei only wants to hear cleans all day he should lay down the electric guitar and maybe stick to his wine tasting classes
finns det ingen white falcon?
5420 for me!!!!!! bra thaaa!
G5622T-CB !!!
Through that box anything would sound the same - what about a clean tone?
kenokid Yeah. we'll do one of those too one of these days. Cheers
Yeah, what about just that amp on the verge of breaking up; so we can get a sense of the dynamics of the different guitars.
But good job anyway!
Thank You...

For Me
First panther
And 5422t.
But i prefer the sound of the brown 5422t 🤔🤔🤔
My most preferred is hummm...
THAT ONE!!!!!!!!!!! :-)
all sound almost identical
the damn gain
what is the music he play?
+thomas gendron yes
i whant to know the title of the first riff he play
AC/DC - Beating Around the Bush.
i like my white 5120
#9 was tasty 👌🏻✨
Thanks Glen!
I would like to hear them in some smooth jazz licks..compressed with a little bit of a delay/reverb blend.
I can hear some feedback whistle @ some models
Thanks, we'll keep that in mind next time
Uz'e welcome friend.
Great demo BTW
Thanks Aldrin!
5420T all the way
Love my man salmon baby 😎
The overdrive used just messed everything up...

love mine to the enddddddddddddddddddddddd
What is that riff from?
Nicholas Theriot Hi Nicholas, Simon usually plays his own riffs so, I'm guessing its one of those :-) Cheers
Sounds like AC/DC - Beating Around the Bush. Maybe not exactly the same but very similar.

the panther ate the falcon
+Rj Bron :-)
the gretsch are not made for this kind of noise.

Smoking
