If I knew of any other holidays I would ask, unfortunately I do not have enough knowledge of your local holidays. Maybe that is something to cover, an episode dedicated to all the different holidays and special days of remembrance. Thank you for the ❤ on my previous comment 😃
Great advice, thank you! In Norway the month that can be difficult is July, and then typically the last three weeks. This is a period we call "fellesferie" which might be translated to "common/shared holiday". A lot of government functions close, and kids are not in school. So that means people in many other industries also take their holidays so they can be together. While you shouldn't have any issues with hotels or popular tourist spots, some places will seem quite empty as Norwegians travel elsewhere.
Yeah, I lucked out with three outta of the four. Got the year, month, and day for my birthday. Guess I can’t be too greedy. Plus, the katana makes up for not getting the week😂
I'm glad to have found this, as Golden Week is mentioned in many animes that deal with school or slice of life stories. I was beginning to think it was like Spring Break is here in the US, except of course for the excessive use of alcohol. Thanks! Most informative.
I totally traveled to Kyoto in 2019 during Golden week without even knowing till my Airbnb host in Tokyo said something. 🤦♀️🤦♀️ Definitely not making that mistake again. I still had a great time just to many people.
Based on my lifetime of experience in my hometown, my favorite season is the edge between summer and fall. If the weather is going to be unusual, it is going to be hotter than usual. When the year is on the edge between spring and summer, the weather is going to be extra cold if it is going to be unusual. If I have to deal with a weather surprise, I would prefer it to be extra hot instead of extra cold.
I think the last 2 weeks of April have the best weather in Kyoto as well as the last 2 weeks if October. I saw this because I lived in Uji Kyoto. Summer is time for fireworks, festivals and beer gardens. Kyoto will be very hot and humid. November through December the autumn foliage is beautiful.
I never heard of silver week, but I know of golden week. Actually, the reason wasn't something like anime or manga, but because I've worked in logistics. All the shipments from overseas would completely stop during certain holiday weeks lol.
I traveled many times in August and it is also very crowded because of Obon when many people take shinkansen to come back to their hometowns...I still remember when I was stuck in Okayama station "midori no madoguchi" trying to book a shinkansen ticket, in the end I took a no reserved seat to come back to Shin-Osaka.
Mind you, in New York City, the difficult times are any of the days in which a holiday event is broadcast on TV - which is exactly when (pre-COVID, at any rate) you'd see large crowds. And the last time you should go to the US if you re a tourist is Thanksgiving (third Thursday in November and the surrounding days), because not only is that when the Thanksgiving parade happens (which makes navigating the relevant parts of NYC downright impossible) that's when lots of people travel to visit their families as well. And the Friday right after is "Black Friday", when people literally crowd the stores to take advantage of sales. So if you are not from the US, you might want to skip the third week of November for US vacations for that reason. Maybe with COVID that might be not as much of an issue, but I wouldn't hedge my bets on that if I were you. Not unless you plan to immigrate here (in that case that might be a perfectly okay plan because then you can celebrate Thanksgiving with any family that might have immigrated before you did, I've heard of that happening).
I really want to visit during the Sakura season!!! I recently got a couple packages of seeds to try to raise a Sakura grove in my yard, here's to the future!!! 😁😁😁
Back in 2019 when I started planning my future trip I wanted to go on my birthday, which is April 28th and wouldn’t have been the best. I’m hoping that we can travel again soon
Excellent vídeo! Helped me a lot, I am planning a trip From Brazil to Japan in May/2023. From your explanation I see that Golden week is similar to Carnival holiday here, I totally avoid crowded and very expensive places. So i will change my dates to spend time in South Korea during the Goden Week and then go to Japan till first week of June. Thanks 😊
Thank you so much for this video Shogo. The first time I heard of the holiday Golden Week was in One Piece with the BW member Ms. Golden Week. Very informative video I learned a lot today!
Kagoshima in late April becomes both humid and rainy at the same time! Except for that Golden Week that I always avoid travelling, I do enjoy samidare a lot.
I was a little confused when you said that there would be no leaves on the trees in November in Kyoto because we found it to be the exact opposite when we visited in 2019. We were actually recommended to come around the first half of November because then the leaves would be at full colour and we were not disappointed. The temples and shrines that had maple leaves were lit up at night and our wedding at Oharano-jinja was a feast for the eyes with red and yellow trees filling the shrine. Takao to the west was also full of red trees. We were in Kyoto from November 11th to 25th.
Hi Shogo, to answer you question at the end: This might be weird, but if I would go to Japan, I would be most curious about the music scene: traditional Japanese music of course, but also I have quite a lot of favourite Japanese bands from the alternative music scene (MONO, World' End Girlfriend, Matryoshka, etc.) whom I would like to hear. Also I would be interested in art: Japanese paintings and woodcuts and such. Thanks for your informative videos! :)
We have the same holiday season during this time in Poland. Its called May Holiday. May 1st its Labour Day, 2nd its Flag Day and 3rd its Constitution Day as well.
Yeah with the state of emergency going on currently, this Golden Week everything is closed and if you do find something open, it will close at 8pm, last order is 6:50pm so you have to go to dinner before then.
We have this kind of many holidays in May too as our consitution day is also on the same day as yours. It wss like your silver week in the past, 1st May and 3rd was holidays, but people usually planned one day holiday at work on the second. Eventually goverment added one holiday on 2nd May so we have 3 days free next to each other. Then sometimes it is next to weekend. If it is like Mon, Tue, Wen, or Wen, Thur, Fri, we just have whole week free. But if it's one day from the weekend people usually plan holiday at work at this day and schools usually make this day a holiday just because of students just don't care and just don't go to school. So now it is like this Golden Week even if it should be like Silver Week, because we plan it this way XD
One Piece had a 1 off enemy "Miss Goldenweek" back during the Alabasta Arc, so it is nice to finally get the background on the holiday she is named after.
I felt like the Golden Week is like a Japanese March break, but in April, a April break, we had an April break once instead 2 years ago, because of a lockdown interrupted so we skipped the holiday in March to April only once.
mm... i have always been avoid high season since i can't stand the crowd while travel lol but it's good to know more details about Golden Week~ and def will avoid lol i crushed into the sakura season one time... the allergy almost killed me as i could hardly breath lol, gonna avoid that as well...
For inexpensive but nice souvenirs try Daiso store. It is a chain. Everything is 100Yen or about $1. They have beautiful Japanese dishes, fans, etc plus a variety of interesting daily living goods like stationary, chopsticks, etc.
Oh no! Thats the month I was planning to go. My 1st week would be in Nagoya, does it get crowded there too? Or is it specific areas that are more commonly crowded?
I first heard of it when I got a gaming event ad and while reading the LN of "she the cutest but where just friends" vol 1 last week I was wondering what it was
Do NOT travel on Golden Week unless you want to pay triple the normal price to be a sardine in public transport, on an airplane etc. On the plus side the cities empty out and it is quite pleasant to stay "home". Chusok in Korea is same-- don't travel then. There is also a week like that in China too.
So basically the term "Golden Week" has the same origin as the term "black friday" since it came from the commercial niche of the society, or am I mistaken?
It used to be a religious festival to the native religion shinto which is my religion and still is frist the sweet flag festival then the boys festival but people sometimes forget
How does one "nurture a rich heart"? Consume cholesterol laden foods until your arteries are rich with constricting fats? I'll assume that's what it is and act accordingly. I'll seize any opportunity to gorge myself on cheese.
Can you hang out koi-nobori if you have only girls? You say that original it is boys day and now it is gender neutral. But girls have also a special day in March? I believe it is the 23rd. So way is it now gender neutral.
Yes, you can. Girls' Day is traditionally March 3rd, but it's not an official 祝日 (day off from work or school), so nowadays girls and boys share a holiday on May 5th. Lots of places still go all-out in displaying 雛人形 (Hina dolls) on March 3rd, so it's almost like girls get double the fun now! :)

I honestly thought that Bronze week was also a thing lol.
And here I thought it be japanese's another wording for 'march break' there.... [mumbled at my assumptions]

Being as tuck at home during golden week is truly a... Gold Experience

Don't forget the Requiem, you'll definitely stuck at home forever without reaching conclusion... .
Even if you get confused somewhere during the middle, thats ok just rewatch it 😂
This so called golden week has repeatedly mentioned in anime and manga, without me understanding what it means and origins
Thank you shougo! 😍

I had never heard of golden week before, so good to know in advance to avoid that time frame.

Sakura season was my favorite time to live in Tokyo. Best weather of the entire year IMHO.
Heard about Golden Week and now I know what it is.
Thanks Shogo itoko, for the video. May you and your family have great genki and enjoy your week!

Thank you Shogo! I was curious why manga takes Golden Week off.
In Poland we also have constitution day in 3rd may 😊

I totally want to come during the 梅雨!!!
So many things are closed during Golden Week, it might not be worth it.
Thanks again Shogo! Love your vids always entertaining and informative.
Do people working during golden week revieve a higher rate of pay?
We have the same holiday season during this time in Poland. Its called May Holiday. May 1st its Labour Day, 2nd its Flag Day and 3rd its Constitution Day as well.

I'm intrested in doing interactive things like painting or flower arrangement, and cooking. Anything with crafts basically.
Have a happy Golden Week, Shougo
One Piece had a 1 off enemy "Miss Goldenweek" back during the Alabasta Arc, so it is nice to finally get the background on the holiday she is named after.
Ok that “according to the law” part was the funniest thing I’ve heard all day.
I felt like the Golden Week is like a Japanese March break, but in April, a April break, we had an April break once instead 2 years ago, because of a lockdown interrupted so we skipped the holiday in March to April only once.

Going places when there’s usually fewer tourists is ideal!
Shogo can you please teach me how to sheath the wakizashi and the katana please like in niten ichi ryu!
Holy smokes first time I was in the top 10. I didn't know about golden week good to know why to not travel at this time.
Last two weeks of March 2019 were amazing. The sakura had just begun to blossom in Tokyo. Kyoto was still better though.
I would enjoy getting a bento box and a set of serving bowls and perhaps some silk material
For inexpensive but nice souvenirs try Daiso store. It is a chain. Everything is 100Yen or about $1. They have beautiful Japanese dishes, fans, etc plus a variety of interesting daily living goods like stationary, chopsticks, etc.
is that samurai armor gosakus from ghost of tsushima so cool
In Mexico we have a day of the children, but it’s celebrated on 30th of april
My honest opinion
Go out in golden week
In india on weekly holidays you will not find a single centimetres space in malls and famous places
Oh no! Thats the month I was planning to go. My 1st week would be in Nagoya, does it get crowded there too? Or is it specific areas that are more commonly crowded?
Would you look at that? Poland and Japan both have their Constitution Day on 3rd of May! Coincidence?
I first heard of it when I got a gaming event ad and while reading the LN of "she the cutest but where just friends" vol 1 last week I was wondering what it was
