  • The Okefenokee Swamp is one of Georgia’s most fascinating areas - rich in wildlife, history and natural beauty. Its sparkling prairies, cypress lagoons and pine-covered islands are home to many precious species, making the Okefenokee a Georgia and national treasure.
Swampwise is an Emmy-winning documentary that explores the swamp with host Okefenokee Joe, aka Dick Flood. Flood, a country music singer/songwriter, is also a professional naturalist and ardent environmentalist. He is well-known to GPB viewers from his first documentary, The Joy of Snakes which you can watch at • Joy of Snakes | GPB Do... . He lived in the Okefenokee Swamp for ten years, learning first-hand about the animals and plants in the area.
This hour-long program, punctuated by Flood’s original songs, tracks the seasonal changes in the swamp. As Flood explores the Okefenokee’s waterways, he shows us how to live off the land and visits historical sites. Along the way he talks to descendants of the swamp’s pioneer settlers and discusses the Okefenokee’s future.
Original air date: 1990. For more Georgia documentaries, check out www.gpb.org/te...

RIP Joe. I met him in 1983. He did a snake show at out middle school. Joe got divorced from his wife in around 2004 and moved in with a friend of mine while he was moving to Sally SC. Joe gave me lessons on handling snakes I would sit around and listen to him play his guitar. I even got a chance to pay him back as I caught a large eastern king snake that he was able to use in his shows. He will be missed.

Dick Flood, (Okefenokee Joe) is in his 80s now living in SC. Y'all should do a follow with him. He's mostly doing music now and just finished his Autobiography. He's a good guy , I talk to him every few months and a man who influenced so many kids of the 80s and 90s should get one more story. He's lived an interesting life besides just his time in the swamp.

how he inspired so many young naturalists. Someone just called me Reef Wise. He cannot imagine just how honored I am by that moniker... Do you know where his autobiography can be found?

My grandfather on my dad's side grew up on a little island in the okefenokee, they had a timber company before the gov took over and made it a national park. I am so glad that it is being preserved. I have pictures of three generations of the men with a gator they fed named Dopey. He would come right up in the yard to get scraps and was apparently very tame. The swamps of the deep south have a sultry wild quality that is found nowhere else in the world. How lucky I was to grow up right by this one. Thank you for sharing this, and RIP Swampy. You taught so many of us to appreciate it. #swampwise

I've seen some documentaries about the Swamp and the flotillas of plant material that redesign the landscape and you could easily get lost if your not mindful of the major landmarks . I've since become more interested in her history as one of my Great Uncles was affectionately called the King of the Okefenokee . His name was Obadiah Barber . His cabin is near Waycross and is considered a national Monument and maintained by the national park Service . He lived there and it was said that the Indians were afraid of him and so were the Bears. Lol Story has it he planted the first Pecan tree in Georgia . 😊❤

@@GPB I know this was a reply from 9 months ago but I'm just getting back to replying. GPB once celebrated what was great about Georgia but now is so focused on the cultural views of Atlanta that the majority of the state is neglected by your broadcasted content. I work in Ecotourism on the coast and the populace we see is now so ignorant to the history and natural environment of the state that it's embarrassing. During my childhood GPB was a place of learning now it's a joke. All I can say is expand your content and let people see the greatness of the state.
