At one stage with Boris, he seemed to be very distraught and said he wanted to cry but could not, I was wondering how they all cope with the mental strain and if they can have counseling on board, I have noticed the changes in demeanor and looks since the race started, It seems to me to be a huge part of the race, being able to cope with the sleep deprivation and to remain positive? Cheers Jim
Sometimes sailors report noises from the foilers. They speak of "singing and whirring". What is that and aren't such vibrations particularly dangerous for the carbon components?
Q for Violette and Jean: Violette is sailing Jean's previous boat. What do they think about that? Is there a sort of link between the youngest sailor and the most experienced one?
To Violette Dorange: You are absolutely amazing. What a performance with a smile. You are an exceptional role model, for young and older ones. Question: A Vendée Globe at your age, how do you want to top it? Where do you see your further development after this VG?
I am floored, literally dumbstruck at Jingkun Xu and his incredible effort...!! Man, knowing about him is one thing but actually _seeing_ how he handles his yacht one-handed....utterly speechless... I hope Conrad and the other sailors close to him navigate through the iceberg region in complete safety. Frightening to see that. Ominous.
QUESTION - related to on of my previous ones regarding "steering the boat manually" -- IF Conrad visually detects a smaller iceberg in front of him, how would he be able to quickly steer the boat if the tillers arent attached? Can he push some buttons on the autopilot to make the boat steer to port or starboard to quickly avoid hitting something?
Questions for Violette: Big respect for your performance during the VG! What were your experiences? How do you deal with the possibly unknown situation in the Southern Ocean? How did you prepare for it?
My questions ... Violetta... What are jockey pole numbers for? Boris...So far 2 of 33 have let us see/feel the rig/sail heads, tell tales , trim, only mast tops twice each... (once out the skyportlight!) Nobody else shows aloft at all.... Is it race tactics? Hide your configs? ⛵ Jean Le Cam how did you learn sailing? Any classic schooners...? Are u captain for deliveries Charters? Teach sailing?
Q for Jean: How are you able to consistently sail faster than the foiling boats around you? Also, what advantages does your boat's daggerboard design have over the older daggerboard boats?
I would love to hear Boris Herrmann describe what happened in detail with his boat. Did it capsize or was it a knock down. Cheers! Love the show! My Wife and I haven't missed a single episode!
For Violette. Is it difficult to train and mentally prepare for an enormous adventure when everyone else is twice your age? How do you convince yourself that you are equally prepared? Thanks
Got my mugs I ordered. Wish the logo was bigger on the cup, but love the design. Happy to support your effots. Great channel. Amazing drone footage! Love the images when two boats are close.
I'm surprised at shipping cost...I'm ordering from Holland and still it has an international charge...this doubles the cost of your mug...I'd love one but NOT that much...thanks for all your videos and reports
Jean mentioned in an interview that time speeds up for him during the Vendee Globe. I wondered it Violette and Boris feel the same and if they have had any inspirational or spiritual experiences during this race.
The extreme cold, varying weather updates, the surprising number of very strong, low weather systems knitted together with fluctuating wind gusts and turbulent sea state have all tested the captains and theur boats.
Q&A for Violette. You are on an amazing adventure at such a young age - what is your long term vision? My great Aunt had the same name, Violetta Thurstan. She had an incredible adventurous life with extraordinary achievements. I really hope she can be an inspiration for you. See Wikipedia
I am so impressed with Violette! Her confidence and courage to take this race on was impressive to begin with. But that is nothing compared to her delightful good cheer during the race: She’s happy, her boat is always immaculate and organized, she’s doing her stretches, she really doesn’t seem to be breaking a sweat during a race where we’ve seen grown men cry in frustration, anger and disappointment. Is this easy for her? Is it as easy as it looks? Or is she just tactically sandbagging the old gents 😂😂😂 Please feature our youngest skipper on SeaWolves!
As I am curious about what motivates each skipper, I have a two-part question in common for Jean, Violette or Boris: (1) What is your core motivation that sustains you through the many extreme challenges of the Vendee Globe? And (2) how has your motivation evolved over the years offshore alone?
Loving the channel and always something new to think about! If only the captain of the Titanic had thought of ice as a metal, he would’ve had more respect for its destructive capabilities!
Loving every minute Florian, remotely on a month trip from the middle of India but making sure to find a data signal to keep updated!. Can we hear from Boris H … 2 questions: 1. A tour of your cockpit please, am intrigued by your layout and especially side entry door(s). 2. Has anything changed (I hope improved!) with the technology to help you and other skippers avoid your fishing boat incident from last time? Thanks … Bon courage a tous (or whatever you say in German!).
Question for any of them: What’s the first thing they would want to do after returning to the harbour after the race, and what is what they will really need (or be forced) to do?
General question: why do the exclusion zone latitudes shift so far north to the east of South America? Does the ice drift farther north there? Or are there other factors? Thanks!
I have a question for Jean Le Cam. "What is your strategy for route selection? How do you balance distance, point of sail and weather? etc" Thank you Florian ❤
My question for Boris Herrmann:, how do you keep your energy up when you're not able to sleep? Is it about eating good food or is it more of a mental state you have to put yourself into? Thanks Caroline
Love your show! Question to Jean: What is the story behind your boat‘s name? And do you use the full name in official radio communications repeating it 3 times 😜?
That is'sa thread the needle with a'a drone Kaptain Conrad 💚❤️ I had too hold my breath! Waiting with the sitting Duck's currently 😊 so Much fun, so little Time 🧭 âsh'ent'm ☮️ 🐭🧀
Will the old fox monsieur le cam do another vendee ?? At the young age of 69 .... I would love it as everyone would ,,, Gary in ontario ,,,,, CLACK CLACK CLACK
My Long time question is: Is there a deadman/Overboard fob that the skippers wear all the time so if they are further than 60' away from the control panel it will turn the autopilot into the wind??? It seems easy to design...? If not an overboard situation would see the boat sailing off at top speed until the batteries run out?
Hello! Thank you for the daily show-I tune in every day from Riga, Latvia, and thoroughly enjoy it! I’m curious to learn more about Boris’s 360-degree turn. How did he manage to pull it off with only a touch of fear-and perhaps just a tiny bit of “accident,” but otherwise in such a spectacular way? It’s a relief that everything turned out well in the end!
Great idea Flo!! Question for Boris: If you could, would you change anything of the design of you boat, for example, more suitable for upwind than downwind?
Recently a 70 footcarbone 😂 catamaran constructed by a cure Marine in Australia install dagger boards but added foiled on the rudders plus or -6° major in increasing performance. You need to talk to the naval architecture design at all.
What a dope clip from Conrad 🙌🏼 Question: How come Jeans' route has generally far less gybes then any else on the map you're showing..? (Coming from a simple fan of the Vendee Globe, since Fa Nándors' 2016 participation) Greetings from New York city! Have really gotten to enjoy your shows, it's enjoyable to tune in daily! 👍🏼
Thank you Florian, another great show to keep us all being part of the race! Question to Boris: I am not sure if you want to talk about it , and it is ok if you don’t. As far as I know, most of the foiler Imocas have a weight of 1,5t without a Kiel. You don’t give information about Malizias weight. Your wife was talking about the laboratory instruments have a weight of 0,5t or so. So eventually a disadvantage in competitiveness ? I mean I personally appreciate a lot your engagement in environmental research and it is simply super important. So you missed at one point being in the same weather system than Charly and Yoann. But what I observed, Malizia Seaexplorer is perhaps missing 10 - 15% speed performance due to the weight. Would you agree?
Did you know that there are 815 000 sailors doing the Vendee Globe . I rounded Cape horn today in 33 500th place +- (Mind blowing right) ! The sailors spoke of the unreliable weather models.. we use the same models and it's impossible to create a strategy. 🌎 Was very cool to have had that frustration, then to hear it from the real boats... That's where virtual reality is headed, and it's going to be awesome! Every weather update is completely different. Cool to hear the sailors had the same experience. 😂 In the game Virtual Regatta, we can see the real boats and we are racing against them... It's been an absolute education. Check it
Question for all the skippers: If you could change one thing about the Vendee Globe circuit what would it be? (Anything from, schedule, boat rules, investors, etc.)
A Question for all. There are so many repairs that we have seen being carried out. I’ve been wondering if all participants carry the same stuff for repairs. How do you decide what to carry and is there a maximum weight of repair materials and equipment to take with you?
Question ( all skippers) : what is your sleep rhythm, how long after the start did it take you to get into this rhythm, and how consistent is it considering the unplanned issues you have to deal with.
Florian, This may be premature but I would be curious to know given the science of the foilers translating to speed disparity with the dagger board boats, would the sailers like to see the Vendee split into two sections in the future
The disparity between the daggerboards and foilers is most pronounced between the oldest daggerboard yachts and the newest foilers. In the last edition, there weren't that many new-gen foilers but the performance delta has really become apparent in this edition with all the recent commisionings. The trend will no doubt continue for 2028. If it is done for the VG they will need to do it for all the other races in the IMOCA Globe Series such as the Route du Rhum, Rolex Fastnet, Defi Azimut, etc. The race organization might be reluctant to introduce a sub-class for a yacht design that adheres in every way to the class design rules except for two appendages. When T-foil rudders are permitted in future races, the performance disparity will leapfrog by yet another big jump. Estimates of around 5kts faster compared to the fastest foilers currently sailing. So, at one point something will probably need to be done; perhaps a forced retiring of the older daggerboard fleet sometime in the next decade.
It seems like the big downside of foils for any open-ocean endurance race is that a non-foiling boat could hit an object (not head-on but at some small angle) and take a glancing blow with minimal damage, whereas a foil is going to get trashed. This raises a question: are foil systems designed to take an impact and "breakaway" vs. damage to the hull? Also, it seems the foils are of questionable use in very rough conditions or points of sail. I'd like to hear more about that.
Q for Boris: what does he think is the reason of the advantage of the leaders from his point of view? Characteristics of the boat? Tactical decisions? Mental or physical strength?Just being lucky?
Hey Florian, I actually wanted to shop in your shop but it does not function in some way. There is an error respond....maybe you check this yourself and fix itz somehow. Other than that: your show is the absolut best. Really!
Hello Florian, question for all the skippers is “on average how many sail chamges did you in the Indian and Pacific ocean per day? How many hours of work on deck is that equivalent to?. Buon Vento
QUESTION to Boris: Does Boris think his boat Malizia has an advantage on upwind on low wind zones compared to the competitors or not - based on the construction, or are they all similar and it comes back to tactic and trim? Thanks from Austria.Robert
How may time have you been up the mast? What for? Any coming up? Can you go to top while under way or do you need to stop? Is it just assumed that something will break requiring a trip up? How are sails holding up?
Water is a combination of 2 elements. Alloys of metals don't make it into the periodic table. Aluminum, gold etc are pure elements and deserve to be on the periodic table.
6:00 -- RE: Drone Re-Capture; I was watching another channel lately here on UA-cam, specifically a video about the history and development of helicopters, and it showed a film clip from the 1930s or 40s that demonstrated how to land a small helicopter on a moving ship at sea. The pilot can drop a rope to people on the deck and hold the hover attitude while the crew literally pulled it down onto the deck. I should think a short length of lightweight chain that is attached to the bottom of a drone would allow for the same thing to happen, whether it can be made to winch in and out remotely and all that without messing up the drone's center of gravity or flight characteristics? Who knows.
Try to capture a drone. The flight stabilization refuses to do this and the drone defends itself. Only the DJI drones can be switched off directly with a quick turn on the back. That's why a rope is not a good idea.
Question for Boris: it has often been said that the Malizia Seaexplorer was designed for the conditions in the Southern Ocean. In your opinion, has this been confirmed? What chances do you see of catching up now?
Thanks Florian great show, impressive jungkun Xu, mindblowing steering of his drone from Conrad Q !for him how does he adapt his sleeping pattern with these floating mines around him? And last for le roi Jean Q What is different to him in this 6th VDG,? Is the objective to go below 80 days on a non foiler?
17:45 -- RE: RE: Water and the Periodic Table; Water is a chemical compound, that's why it isn't exactly Metal. Notice also, water is specifically a kind of Oxide of Hydrogen, so yes, it has clearly metallic properties.
Jean, do you prefer to sail a non foiling boat, and do you think they are safer? Or will you have foils for the next race? My guess is that with foils you would be right with the overall leaders or maybe clear ahead. Peter.
I presume - If you fall off, a safety line will only drag you along in the water, completely helpless and unable to combat the forces. I would presume they wear an automatic distress beacon. Maybe OK at 3 knots, utterly helpless at 10 knots. In stronger conditions, where you are most likely to fall off, these boats go at 25 knots and more.
Sometimes sailors report noises from the foilers. They speak of "singing and whirring". What is that and aren't such vibrations particularly dangerous for the carbon components?
Boris: in the last Vendee he said, people should remind im after the race not to race the Vendee again... did he already regret his second Vendee? Violette: what has been more challenging: the preparation for the race ( qualification, finding sponsors etc.) or the race itself so far?
for Lacam is your superior performance an example of old age and treachery defeating youth and stamina. Can you cite examples of decisions that created opportunities to build your lead? For Boris, How much of your performance is due to your prep work?
Question for Boris: Malizia hast been optimized for stronger winds as far as i have learned. But the race seems to be decided in the Low winds area before, because a 100 Miles ahead can get you into a strong system and then it doesn't help If your boat ist a knot faster, right? Will you rethink priorities for next vendee? A fantastic Boris-race and thank you for daily Updates! I am Sure you will get 6th place at finish. Good luck!
Question for any of them: Being out there totally on your own, do you ever get a feeling of freedom or are you just too tired / too busy / too involved for that?
Wait… water (H2O) is a molecule, not an element in the periodic table. Perhaps it captures your intention better to think of water as a solid rather than a liquid?
haha, everything is a molecule :). but when you put more of the same together in large numbers, they start developing distinct properties. I was not making a semantics point. I was saying that, (for my own practical reasons) I have come to the realization that the most effective way of thinking about water (If you want to have a good feel and predictive model for how water will behave) it's best to think of it, as a metal. Think of it as a mental exercise. I'll give you an example. If you ask most people, what will happen if somebody falls onto a body of water from 30 meters or higher? Even though people mostly know about the surface tension of water, they have a hard time imagining water as very hard and heavy material. If you would tell the same people: what if a person fell from 30 meters high onto a big deep pool of liquid metal, what will happen? Now they find it very intuitive to imagine that the person will likely smash to bits on the surface of the liquid metal... Because they understand metals intuitively. Once you put water in the correct category, people have a much easier time predicting how it will behave.
@@SeawolvesTV I do see what you are doing here, however maybe make it clear that what you are describing is a model for the behaviour of water in limited circumstances. Models are great, as long as it is clear what is being discussed.
We love the racing coverage. But science not your strength ;-) We agree that ice is hard if you hit it. But hard is not the same as metal. For example diamonds are very hard but like water they are neither metal nor an element. Looking forward to the skipper segments :-)
Perhaps you should listen again, and even more precisely to what I actually said :) And perhaps after that, you could try to assume that, even though you may not immediately grasp a new perspective on something you think you already understand (you cannot fill a cup that is already full) .When you are offered a new and interesting perspective which you do not immediately understand or agree with, it is better to be interested and try to understand it, then to be dismissive and assert that the other party must be wrong. I have found that, people that really understand science, are generally delighted and curious whenever they hear any type of thinking which they have not encountered before. People who feel a need to immediately criticize and discourage different ways of thinking, are generally just fearful of actual science and do not understand what actual science even is :).
Questions for Q&A with Jean, Violette or Boris in the comments below please :)
Will Boris be hoping to repeat his luck of the last Vendee Globe and take the inaside route past Cape Finister to shortcut the others?
At one stage with Boris, he seemed to be very distraught and said he wanted to cry but could not, I was wondering how they all cope with the mental strain and if they can have counseling on board, I have noticed the changes in demeanor and looks since the race started, It seems to me to be a huge part of the race, being able to cope with the sleep deprivation and to remain positive?
Cheers Jim

Violette, Great job for such a young sailor. Question. What did you do to prepare for this fantastic challenge ?
Same questions for all three skippers. What would you have done differently in terms of tactics? And what did you forget to pack? Capt Mike
I would like to know how the reefing system works on the main.
Is it single line furling. Can't imagine man handling such a huge main?
As I am curious about what motivates each skipper, I have a two-part question in common for Jean, Violette or Boris: (1) What is your core motivation that sustains you through the many extreme challenges of the Vendee Globe? And (2) how has your motivation evolved over the years offshore alone?
Q for any. How do you keep your clothes clean on such a "focused" event? Or do you just grin and bare it, and when you arrive back, dock down wind?
Loving the channel and always something new to think about! If only the captain of the Titanic had thought of ice as a metal, he would’ve had more respect for its destructive capabilities!
exactly :)

Future racers: " You remember icebergs?"
Thank you for update!

Hello Florian, question for all the skippers is “on average how many sail chamges did you in the Indian and Pacific ocean per day? How many hours of work on deck is that equivalent to?. Buon Vento
Can you please ask "king" Cam if he will be present in the next vendee? That would be fantastic
Question for Boris and Jean:
Having sailed around the world multiple times, does the world feel smaller or bigger to you?
Q for any of them: What did you do to prepare for the race to strengthen your resilience, especially in difficult situations?
Question for Boris: it has often been said that the Malizia Seaexplorer was designed for the conditions in the Southern Ocean. In your opinion, has this been confirmed? What chances do you see of catching up now?
Thanks Florian great show, impressive jungkun Xu, mindblowing steering of his drone from Conrad Q !for him how does he adapt his sleeping pattern with these floating mines around him? And last for le roi Jean Q What is different to him in this 6th VDG,? Is the objective to go below 80 days on a non foiler?
QUESTION - In the next Vendee - do you think it will more important to be a great sailor - or good at media - to get sponsorship?
17:45 -- RE: RE: Water and the Periodic Table; Water is a chemical compound, that's why it isn't exactly Metal. Notice also, water is specifically a kind of Oxide of Hydrogen, so yes, it has clearly metallic properties.
I said: "I think it's better to THINK of water as a metal... :) I didn't say that it is or isn't a metal :)
Jean, do you prefer to sail a non foiling boat, and do you think they are safer? Or will you have foils for the next race? My guess is that with foils you would be right with the overall leaders or maybe clear ahead. Peter.
I will buy me a horn and train the intro
Why no safety lines when on deck?
I presume - If you fall off, a safety line will only drag you along in the water, completely helpless and unable to combat the forces. I would presume they wear an automatic distress beacon. Maybe OK at 3 knots, utterly helpless at 10 knots. In stronger conditions, where you are most likely to fall off, these boats go at 25 knots and more.
If the safety line is short on a jack line they won't go overboard though.
Sometimes sailors report noises from the foilers. They speak of "singing and whirring". What is that and aren't such vibrations particularly dangerous for the carbon components?
Boris, tell us about your 360
Will Boris hand the malizia torch to Will Harris for the 2028 vendee globe??.
Boris: in the last Vendee he said, people should remind im after the race not to race the Vendee again... did he already regret his second Vendee?
Violette: what has been more challenging: the preparation for the race ( qualification, finding sponsors etc.) or the race itself so far?
Question for King John... Will we see him in 2028 edition?
Can you tell us how they are getting internet access? Starlink?
for Lacam is your superior performance an example of old age and treachery defeating youth and stamina. Can you cite examples of decisions that created opportunities to build your lead? For Boris, How much of your performance is due to your prep work?
That looked more like a oneweb satellite 😅
In what time zone do you and your land-based team operate/communicate? Whatever time one you are in? UTC? UTC+1 (FR)?
Question for Boris - are there penalties assessed for crossing into the ice exclusion zone?
Question for Boris:
Malizia hast been optimized for stronger winds as far as i have learned.
Good luck!
Question: What happens when a foil hits a whale? Will it kill the whale?
Question for any of them:
Being out there totally on your own, do you ever get a feeling of freedom or are you just too tired / too busy / too involved for that?
Ouestion, does'nt their radars "see" the icebergs and give them an early warning?
Those Icebergs should be disqualified for crossing the ice exclusion zone….
For Le Cam , will he sail also the next Vendee globe race in 2028?
Models are great, as long as it is clear what is being discussed.
the obvious question for Boris I have is why he is 1700 miles behind and did not get on the first bus before cape good hope
I don't really have a question except what has been on their minds regarding home what are you looking forward to🌊
Racing without exclusion zone: ua-cam.com/video/UOdPtIYdBHk/v-deo.htmlsi=pwzi1F1Ws7YG1SBj
How many days have you relived in your life by crossing the date line from west to east?
Question for Boris. Boris, who does your hair?
