Awesome information I just got 3 sq feet plate of carbon fiber 1/4 inch thick. to make lots and lots of handles. I wonder if it will be good to have them cut in a CNC machine?
Thanks for the tips. Just picked some up from a local composites supplier to use on a few knives, probably wouldnt have bothered wearing a respirator before watching this. Nice blade you made.
i have some carbon fiber twill in 1/4 '' but need to get 3/16 haves! i have never worked with CF before,so i have a table saw, could i use this to split or take it down to 3/16th with fine-cut blade at high speed!
I have worked with carbon fiber once and had heard about these issues before also. So I bundled up before hand. Good advice throughout. By the by, The "800" looks great!
Oh yeah. I forgot to mention. I use surgical gloves as often as I can while working through certain stages of the knife making process. Mainly so I don't get other parts of the knife and/or materials dirty. I still get a good feel of what I am doing, and can get the gloves crazy cheap from just about any where.
Great Post Ben, I don't make them(knives) but I'm sure the people that do will benefit from this post. I have contoured handles before. The dust can get every where! Thanks bud.
I am doing a knife with G10 right now....its fiberglass basically.....It has actually been really easy to work with, cut and shape. No different then do some body work on a car. I like it better then Micarta as you dont have the linen/canvas fibers popping up.
Alejandro Mier Its responds very well when working it. I prefer it over materials like Micarta which really clog up abrasives. Just take a few precautions and you are good to go.
for micarta i do most of the work with my 1X30 then i take some time to finish it by hand it doesn't seem to clog up too much but ill defiantly look into carbon fiber!
Oh, another point: old woodworker's trick: clamp a piece of HDPE or Delrin behind your piece before you drill it. It'll drill clean and won't splinter at all because the delrin supports the wood.
If you drill 98% through your work and then flip it over and finish the hole from the opposite side you won’t get any splinters and since you already drilled a pilot hole you won’t need to guess where it’s going to come out at... I’m actually really surprised you didn’t know to do that already.
I'm so glad I watched this, I was just gonna treat it like I would metal. No resperator, prolly no safety glasses, nothing 😂 that wouldve been a shitty time
Anything worth doing is never easy right?. I’m in construction and finish working and there’s so many freaking steps to do it right. You know for a really nice look as opposed to crap work .
I woudnt work carbon fibre buddy, its already being recognised as as dangerous as asbestos - just a tiny exposure to the dust and you may as well cash in that pension now while you can. Remember, people once thought a dust mask was all you needed with asbestos.

I'm hoping to put some CF scales on my Strider MFS fixed blade knife but idk. Hey, great upload!
what if i hand grind it with a file and sandpaper?

Ben Loope Great Idea on the surgical gloves and thanks for the kind words!!

Thanks for the heads up!
i like the design a lot, so i subbed. i definitely want to work with cf, but don't know where to buy it
Is g10 just as bad to work with?

man, you could've just held up a sign that said "Dont do it" and that's all i would've needed.
Love the handle
Dish Outdoors Thank you!
i haven't worked with carbon fiber , but i am taking everything i learned on this video as a precaution for when i do!

coast carbon fiber??

Me you should definitely wear a respirator when grinding metal.
I learned on wood to pre drill your holes otherwise your wood will split.

Tyvek bunny suits are $7. Not spending a couple bucks on suitable protective gear: dumb.

Yup.
