Correction , you will not see 5v after a diode if 5v is going in, you will see roughly 4.4 volts with a normal diode, 4.7v with a Schottky diode, maybe more with some germanium diodes, and this is an important factor for micro generation.😀
Check out a full wave voltage multiplier and a cockcroft-walton multiplier, double ac voltage and then rectify it to dc, I'm going to try it on my small vawt, I think it might help reduce the impact of a voltage drop over the diodes.
