Regarding Maiden; I think that suing people just because you can is not very rock 'n' roll. If the band themselves aren't involved then they should have better control over their legal representation. If I were them I'd be more concerned about all the emotionless legal entities using my name than underwear companies. Also trying to claim copyright for a single word is stupid, as if the word 'maiden' isn't applicable in lots of other contexts. (Sorry for the long comment but it's monthly now so I've gotta get the most out of it.)
Copyright claims and lawsuits from these big bands likely come from their legal teams. They do it to discourage any copycat merch and protect the brand. Sometimes they go too far but it is probably a short part of a meeting that Bruce Dickinson is in and he just says - stop people ripping off our fans, if they are buying merch, they should buy it from us. So cool that you're putting on a gig. Time to re-watch Wayne's World 2. Sorry for assuming you're Northerners - you do seem to be North of the M25 a lot.
