I get those moods sometimes. I know exactly what you are talking about, had it all my life. I get in that mood and I sometimes feel locked in to it. My dad is the only one who ever knew how to handle me when I'm like that. He says jokingly, "Oh I see, your in a LOCK!! Haha, your in a LOCK son! lol. (almost yelling it with a smile) Okay, let me know when you're out so we can golf, lol" (or what ever we are doing) I swear, calling it out and making me smile pulls me out of it, but no one else has ever taken that approach in my life.
Think that ice house spot was a little better than the hospital parking lot, great mountain range there in WA. Leavenworth looks alot like Solvang here in So Calif.
Haha, for sure! The hospital site was just a means to explore the city for cheap. We wanted to be close so we could get up to the Enchantments early the next day. You saw how that worked out...... :) nate
I always say “it’s life” Travelling you have to change plans as things happen but you found a totally beautiful spot to camp. I so wished that I could find a spot like that. Well done guys love your videos
Haha, we actually do get good campsites on the first try sometimes! The setbacks on this trip really got to me for some reason. I struggled keeping a positive attitude after the closed roads because I sooo wanted to hike and camp up there. Shame on me for not doing more research on road conditions in the area. It ended up great and we had an amazing time. Thanks so much for tuning in! nate
Icicle Creek (which is where I'm assuming you were to start with) all the way down by Klickitat is a HELL of plan-A->B->C->D !! :D No wonder you were ready to be done. (I love both areas)
Yeah it was a crazy day. Long drive up to Leavenworth from Portland just to find ourselves back in the area for the second night. All part of the adventure (at least that is what I try and tell myself) :) nate
Agreed. It makes spontaneous hiking almost impossible. We have no problem paying at the trailhead but rarely do they have the resources available to make that happen. I guess we could buy a yearly permit but we do not hike that much in Washington.
@@ThatBaldwinLife I used to live in WA and I could never guess in the spring whether to buy one or the other pass. And if I bought a fish license it came with permission to park in yet another place. I would have been good with a one pass parks everywhere pass, but Discovery and Fishing are state land, Forest service Federal.... and they can't seem to agree on revenue sharing so it never happens.
On the bright side, yall can sleep in the van pretty much wherever... Tent camping I don't have that option, which is why I usually go to my favorite spots (most favorites still inaccessible out 224 past Estacada)... Sorry I keep blowing up your vids with comments :D
Lovely video - thanks! Great drone shots going on there too. Leavenworth looked amazing - like Austria. I'd never imagined something like that in Washington State. We're big cider fans too - our friends make their own and it's a real local specialltiy. We thought the scenery was fascinating - the way it changes seemingly so quickly; but you did say you had been driving for hours! Clicked 'Like' as usual.
Yeah Leavenworth reinvented itself to be based on tourism back in the 60's. The town is set in an amazing area in the mountains and does feel like being back in Austria. Once you head south and east from the mountains, Washington changes pretty dramatically. It is a pretty diverse state geographically Thanks again for tuning in! nate
Great video thanks. So looking forward to the border opening again. Some little bits… what is your phone holder that fits on the side? Do you find you use your propane fire as much as you intended? What fridge do you use? Did you delete the original fridge? Thanks for Victoria BC.
Hey John, thanks for checking out the vid. The phone holder was actually in our Volvo when we bought it and I made a mount that uses double sided tape to hold it on the side of the instrument cluster. Works well. We use the propane fire pit probably more than we thought. It is so useful during fire bans in the west and for under the awning in the winter. We deleted the original fridge as it wouldn't stay cool and bought an ARB fridge. We are going to install a Truckfridge in place of the original this winter to get back the floor space though. Looking forward to exploring Vancouver Island again this year as well! nate
Just goes to show how easy it is to change your plans when you have something as versatile as a Westy. I was hoping you could answer a question for me. I have an 88 Westy all original with about 65,000 miles on it and never winter driven. The vehicle has been in our family since new and I am just starting to venture a little farther from home base. Having worked on VWs as long as you have,I was wondering if you could tell me if it is normal for my 4 speed to be revving at 3600 rpms at 60 mph. Other Westy owners have told me that most 4 speed Westys are revving closer to 3100 rpms at 60 mph. I feel that I shouldn't drive more than a few hours at those rpms. It are with a 2.1 litre motor. I think I could look for a 5 speed Wolfsburg transmission, but I am just more curious as to whether yours is in the same rpm range at 60 mph. I have been told theories as to why this is , but never from someone with your knowledge of these vehicles. Any ideas? Thanks, and happy exploring.
So true! Man that Westy sounds like a gem!! So glad you were able to keep it in your family. Your RPM is perfectly normal and the WBX motor has no issues running at 3600 rpm all day. If you have the stock size tires, it will cause your rpm to run higher than a larger tire like we have. We run a 215/65/16 which allows a lower rpm on the highway but can sacrifice power as it is a larger tire to turn. Be sure to change out those fuel lines even though you have lower miles, time takes it's toll on the rubber. Then get that Westy out and take your own adventures! Thanks for watching! nate
Enjoying your videos. How long have you been vegetarians? I noticed your comment about being in Leavenworth and eating a vegetarian brat that seemed just so-so and guessing you have enjoyed some real brats before. haha. My wife and I are slowly going vegetarian. Well, we have tried a number of times over the years but after a month or so, went back to normal. This time we have basically stopped eating pork, beef, and any other 4 legged types of meat, and only eat possibly fowl on a weekend as a treat when we have that meat craving (been eating meat for 54 years so hard to fully give up cold turkey), rest of the week all veggie. Periodic fish. Hopes are one day we can stop meat 100% (other than fish) but since Nov last year we cut out lots of meat from our lives. Thanks again for the nice videos.
Hey TJ, we have been vegetarians for just over two years now and yes we had been to Leavenworth before while enjoying the tasty brawtwurst! For just over a year and a half we were pretty strict vegans but have introduced some dairy and eggs into our diet. We do not feel we will be strict vegetarians forever but for now, it fits our lifestyle well. Good luck on your journey. nate
Hey John the propane fire pit is a Camp Chef 15" unit. We bought it from Amazon but it seems to be out of stock right now. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000L4HSH8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 nate

The whole forest pass/discovery pass stuff drives me crazy. It's not expensive, just a pain to acquire.

I put the postitraction from GoWesty on my van and it was well worth it. It's not 4x4 but it does help increase your range in snow, mud and sand.
