My grandfather and his brother fought in WW1. His brother died and my grandfather survived to meet my grandmother and have six daughters, one of which was my mother. Watching footage of the carnage makes me feel how incredibly lucky I am here at all.
A new one! Its over an hour, too! I love the long format ones. Lots of detailed info. This has to be soooo much work, so THANK YOU for all the hard work put into it.
1916 was a major turning point in war tactics and strategy. There were many changes already but 1916 was the key changer. If 1914 was a goodbye to the 19th centure tactics, 1915 was a slow growing pain period foe armies to mature to modern war. 1916 on the other hand was the year what happens when a modern nation goest to total war mode and begins to produce war material in unbelievable speed. 1916 truely showed how much carnage and destruction can be made when titans go with strong force.
I moved from the US to bourbonne les bains. This town had a large hospital and was used for R and R by allied troops. Also a vet clinic for horses. The memorial here shows over 40 boys died from here, from a village , the, of 2500 people. Every little villiage in the area has big memorials…. The french paid dearly
WWI was sadly a multiyear tragedy of leaders constantly being surprised at how much of a beating that opposing armies, societies, and civilizations could withstand and common soldiery and citizenry suffering for it.
The video provides a comprehensive and insightful overview of 1916 during World War I, covering devastating battles like Verdun and Somme, the Brusilov Offensive, and the tense domestic situations. It’s a powerful reminder of the cost of war and the resilience of humanity in the face of immense hardship
Unfortunately these conflicts are quickly becoming forgotten. Schools do not teach the history or the implications of world conflict. Sadly not even a footnote in text books. I PERSONALLY WILL NEVER FORGET.
Are there any plans on convering some of the other fronts / battles in detail, such as parts of the Serbian campaigns like the Battle of Cer, or the caucasus front between Russian and the Ottomans like the Battle of Sarıkamış? I imagine it is difficult to find photographs / videos from those battles, which is important for the Channel's narration style. But, it would be awesome to learn more about them:)
I'd like to see a video covering the Italian front in detail but I'd be happy to watch any videos proposed by the other commenters. They all sound like they'd be interesting.
It's really tough with the footage in some of these campaigns. That being said we will cover the Palestine campaign 1917 and Caporetto 1917 pretty soon and whenever possible focus on the "other" fronts.
Can you make a whole video about the Romania Campaig ?. It was truly unprecedented when the Entente had a change to truly end the war in 1916 and all 4 central powers came together to deal with an existential threat.
Traditionally, it is accepted that a defending force has a 3:1 advantage over an attacker. In other words, a defending force can hold off three times its own number of attackers. This means the British and French needed over 172 divisions to overcome the German 57.5 divisions on the Somme.
3:1 is a theoretical reference that is hardly likely. Most breakthrough advances in military history, including the great war, were made with far less of an advantage. Just look at siege warfare. In some sieges fewer numbers of attackers would simply bottle up and starve the enemy. In other sieges, such as Burgos in 1812, the anglo portuguese and spanish forces could not break through the French defenses despite a 17:1 advantage. Many factors come into play.
1:29:44 Are you still talking about 1916? The Albatros D.III did not enter service until 1917. The D.I and D.II came on line in September 1916. The French SPAD VII also came on line in August 1916, but engine problems were not resolved until 1917.
Great video, and demonstrates the importance of the year 1916 in effecting the course of the later war. I'd like to see a follow-on detailing the effects of the defeat and occupation of Romania by the Central Powers. Not only on the immediate military situation vis-a-vis Russia, and the Allied occupation of Greece militarily, but the effects, if any on countering the British blockade of Germany, and the squabble between Germany & Austro-Hungary over the distribution of the resources they could gain by the occupation of Romania (which squabble, my limited understanding suggests was mainly a result of the blockade.)
As a Lithuanian non-patriot that would have 100% given up my citizenship for a British one if it weren't for Brexit.. I do still want to thank you personally for referring to our capital by its right and proper name.
Romania entered the war in 1916 on the side of the Entente, quick advance into Transilvania followed by defeat and a general retreat to Moldova and continued resistance. Rough times for Romania.
Hello from France🇫🇷🙏. I would like to know if your videos are copyright because I would like to introduce them to some Americans so that they can react to them. Great Video! Will there be a future video about how Kurdistan almost became a country/why Kurdistan didn't become a country after WW1? It's a huge part of modern Middle Eastern history.
Hard disagree with the modern opinion that Verdurn wasnt about bleeding the french white. The armies of the time were extremely cruel to civilians especially the germans.
Just looking into the battle it's the only thing that makes sense. There may have been a a small tactical reason for that terrain but nothing that would have warranted that many soldiers being thrown at the problem.
@morewi I guess I was trying to give the benefits of the doubt to a bunch of high ranking soldiers. Having just looked at maps of these battle ya it just seemed an awful waste of life.
@terryjohnson5579 no those high ranking officers basically ordered their soldiers to be malicious as possible. Look at the Austrian invasion of Serbia and how they purposefully took photos of them torturing civilians.
56:28 there is a detail, city between Erzurum and Trabzon, Bayburt is not fell until mid of 1916. Elements of exhausted third army defend region in mountain ranges. It was one of the reason that why Russian couldn't move inner Anatolia

1:28:30 ". . . native askari soldiers." Askari is Swahili for soldier, so what you said was 'native soldier soldiers.' Not to worry. People make a similar mistake every day with Sahara Desert. 'Cause sahara means desert.
Sahara means desert in arabic yes. The term has however become an internationally recognized name for that specific desert itself, regardless of what that term means in one specific language. It is therefore not a mistake to call it Sahara desert, so as to specify we are talking about the desert in North Africa and not another desert (sahara) of the world.
The 1916 destruction of the Romanian oil wells at Ploesti through British sabotage is rarely mentioned in the history books. The few sources one does come across indicate however that the event can be compared to the destruction of the Kuwaiti oil wells in 1990 by Saddam Hussein´s army.

@ I’m just jumping into American history after spending 25yrs on Europe and the ME and the Zimmerman, Unrestricted submarine warfare, and the Lusitania doesn’t sit right with me. I’m spitballing here, but I do think this is the real reason the U.S. entered the war: The U.S. got rich off the aid they gave the European allies. The U.S. forced the allies to pay for all the wartime aid they had given them-with interest. The only way the allies were able to pay the Americans back was by winning the war. If the allies lost., the U.S. would not be able to collect. 1917 was a horror show for the allies-the worst element being the French mutiny. It really looked like the Germans were going to end up with the victory. So, the U.S. had to enter the war. If they did not a the allies lost-the Americans would be out a lot of treasure.

Not accurate sir. The greatest cause of WWI was the German Schlieffen Plan in combination with the Franco-Russian alliance. Germany had to attack France and Russia at the same time before it could give either side enough time to get armies onto the battlefield, it saw this as its only way to avoid a war on both of its borders and win. The dominos were: Austria Hungary declared war on Serbia, Russia began to mobilize as the historic protector of the Slavs, Germany implemented the Schlieffen plan and quickly attacked France through Belgium and Russia at the same time, and this caused Britain to declare war on Germany.

Shortly followed by a pandemic, rise of racism and another war. I think being born in 1900 must have been one of the worst years to have been born

The French get such a bad rep, they were a defensive force in this war
And they got some fight in them for sure hanging on to verdun and the other fortifications is insane and sure shows balls
They liked killing their own men a bit too much to not get a bad rep.
