The cousin deliberately avoided her at the airport and hid the fact that her son had died because she needed to come to the United States. She never had any intention of telling her about the drowning whether she had called more or not. Family can hurt us deeper than anyone because we assume trust with them.
To me the water visions served as a warning at first, then it became a haunting once her son was actually dead. The tragedy is that she claimed her power too late. The ending where the grandmother knows that she's pregnant tells us that the magical aspects of the film were real and that the Anna Diop character now is in touch with her magic and has someone in her life to guide her.
I agree, I'm certain she probably drowned him.
I was so angry at her cousin. Like wth?!
That’s exactly what I said!!! It’s almost like you can even think is the son even dead!!! Because you came all the way here with all your suitcases!! And not my son!!! Then me not even knowing my son is dead! She had the nerve to ask her on the phone “you never ask about me and how I’m doing; my mother is not well” this is what makes me feel like either she killed the child or the child isn’t dead but left behind and she’s been taking the money for the ticket in hopes to get a ride to run away before she calls her!! Which she did and got caught !!!!!!
The best part was when the boyfriend said he had 5 kids from 5 mothers LMAO I was like RUN
I was a nanny for a few years and I definitely noticed times when the mother seemed almost angry at me if she felt her child was too close to me. Although I understood the feeling, it definitely was hard to deal with and made me realize being a nanny was not for me.
I would have given the cousin a good ass whooping!
she purposely didn't tell Aisha about the son's death, because she needed Aisha to still send money for her to cross over to the US!
Right!
Rest easy, Joseph! The swallowing spiders rumors are more urban legend than anything. Spiders prefer dry, inconspicuous places. The odds one--let alone dozens--would willingly crawl into your mouth while you sleep is very low. Now bugs ground up in our processed foods? That's another story! Enjoyed the review and you two as always. Appreciate you both sharing these and your podcasts with us.
Thank you for putting my mind at ease lol
Leslie Uggams is a phenomenal legendary actor. She played Kizzy in “Roots”. No wonder you wanted to see more of her, she’s a scene stealer.
And She looks like my Mom.💛
I was shocked that they didn't say Roots, first. She's phenomenal, but she will always be Kizzy to me.
Still beautiful!
Trust your instincts about people y’all. Don’t let them run all over you. There’s a reason you were given the gift of discernment esp with her being a mother.
Man that was sooooo screwed up.
Watch the explanation video by Lucas Blue. He explained the role that African folklore and culture which shined light on the significance of some of the imagery. The movie could have done a better job explaining some of this knowing that the vast majority of people watching the movie wouldn’t automatically understand.
I highly recommend watching the inspiration of this film by the original Ousmane Sembène's 1966 film 'Black Girl' (La Noire de). A much more complex film from the Senegalese film master. Many of his films are incredible.
Actually, Nick reviewed Black Girl back in 2017: www.ioncinema.com/news/disc-reviews/criterion-collection-ousmane-sembene-black-girl-blu-ray-review. He forgot to mention it.
"Bitch Better Have My Money" would not only make a better title and if they would of gone that route totally would of been a better movie, ha.
Anansi the Trickster is commonly shown in the form of a spider; I think that is the reason for all of the spider imagery
The cousin, she was being the trickster! Cause as far as we can tell we don’t know for sure if the child is dead and if he is if it was really from drowning or if she’s drowned him! Like she’s such a bad person
Just FYI, the story of Anansi the Spider is African folklore and Anansi is known as a Trickster God, akin to Loki from the Norse Pantheon of Gods, NOT marvel, lol. I have no idea what that may add to the movie because I didn’t see it, but there you go!
Y'all are BY FAR the most interesting reviewers(GAY HOMOSEXUALS or Het 😉)!!! I worked as a care-giver for an individual young person w/disabilities, and the fam was RICH, white and very racist and conservative, they resented me but loved the way I treated and worked with them. They barely paid me and I was TOTAL care, very similar to the experience in the film.
You'll be glad to know that the trivia about swallowing spiders is completely made up. It's been repeated so many times that it's accepted as a fact. It's just an urban legend...thank goodness!!!
Anansi the spider isn't good or bad, but a survivor! Which Ayesha also is.
Omg, my older brothers told me about the swallowing spiders thing when I was 8 and it freaked me out so bad that to this day I sleep with either my hand or the blanket folded over my mouth!! (They told me this after I woke up with one of my eyes swollen shut from a spider bite. Siblings are the worst lol)
Oh no!
For a better psychological thriller of a nanny I will put my $$ on the vintage Bette Davis film of the same name.
Good review, I loved the movie. And the dating scene was WONDERFUL!!
I had never heard of Poor Pretty Eddie before but it is now on my watchlist!
Please write a movie! You guys ideas are so much better.
We are tryihg!
riiiiiiiight yes.
My first memory of Leslie Uggams was on the Mitch Miller tv show. She was young and was a featured singer. I think the show was called Sing Along with Mitch. The words to songs were captioned at the bottom of the screen.
Also side bar. Nanny isn’t only the protagonists it’s also her trifling cousin. The two are juxtaposed being that the protagonist, the one that is under the watchful eye of security cameras is actually in nature very honest and trustworthy, but the one we don’t see, the one that avoids our calls is the one we can’t trust which subsequently led to devastating consequences.
Movies that fall back on dream sequences and hallucinations never work for me. This film was PAINFULLY slow and repetitive as well. Aisha and Malik had nice chemistry and the actors portraying them were very good, but it was not enough to save the film, imo.
Great overview, guys. Movie IRRITATED ME. I want my 2 hours of my life back. It was SO disjointed...like 2 movies in 1. It was a true waste of my time.
You guys didn’t get the movie at all. You trying to make sense of it from the western perspective but the movie is about the immigrant experience , and African spirituality/magic, and pain and missing home, oppression and grief of losing someone when you are so far away. It’s actually incredibly relatable and very well written.
Yuppp it’s also a commentary on the care drain, kinship networks, loss, grief etc
It gave me goosebumps 😆
I don't think they know/feel the "signs".
He talking about her setting up a robbery when she was the one getting robbed 🤣 😂 SMH
Thank you so true. They clearly have not did any research of African spirituality to understand all the symbolism
The film looked great, some shots were really inspired and moody. The acting was solid but the story wasn't really gripping. The characters weren't very fleshed out either, I felt detached to the narration the whole time. Also the pace was pretty slow, making the film longer than It was.
I like the African folklore and mythology part(which could have been explored more) but the esoteric aspects felt off. Insightful review as always but I couldn't recommend the film.
Okay now I want to hear Joseph tell some stories about his momma working , cause I know some had to be some brats 🤣
Joseph my God darling why don't you write? You're practically married to a book editor. Not to mention your most honest and loyal critic and cheerleader I would imagine.
LOL! Well, thanks! There's "themes and cultural mythos" but (story) didn't come off in a way that made sense. Had both of you not 'pointed them out - I guess, The Nanny, *was* the 'Mermaid' after all. Which then makes Joseph's version of what could have been, with no spiders, I guess, the better option for a gripping story ;D
I don’t see the point of this film. All the paranormal aspects made absolutely no sense. Just for us to find out her son is dead 🙃. I would have the cousins a$$ do you hear me!? Like who does that!?
You guys need to be script doctors/polishers because your recommended improvements are often improve the movie or make it more interesting.
Does Joseph write screenplays?? I'd watch these movies u keep pitching
Tasty, Spicy. Well Favored Food.
Unrelated to this review but have you guys seen the movie The Neon Demon? I find it interesting... would make for an... interesting review lo
Nick reviewed it for Ioncinema: www.ioncinema.com/reviews/the-neon-demon-nicolas-winding-refn-review
Arachnophobic here but I'll check it out. I don't like anything with multiple eyes staring at me. Happy Thanksgiving everybody! 🦃
so sorry ...then f****** UA-cam keeps sending recommendations about people with skin diseases that look like miniature eye pustules..LIKE WTF algorithm? Like what does that have to do with my search on making the best spring rolls!?!?!?
there no such thing
I just saw this movie today and it was very confusing, especially the ending but it brought back memories of me traveling to Sierra Leone at 4 years old and almost drowning at the beach. As i sunk to the bottom I thought I was surely gonna die, but when my feet touched the sand, I kicked myself back to shore. My family was so scared, they told me Mami Wata was trying to take me away. I just realized, how much it affected me today, because i still scared to swim at the beach but I had forgotten why. 😅
The ending was basically her succumbing to the fear of the water . In African beliefs the mermaids took people underwater to a magic world but in our reality it is death. When she jumps into the water she basically sacrificed her life only to retrieve her son that had died , traveling into the spirit world (dead) hence the mermaid bringing her back to surface of the water after retrieving her son soul and was symbolically pregnant with him. So the baby on the bed at the end is really her son that died 😢. I know that’s a lot to understand but I explained it best I could 😅😅 and I’m still buzzed from alcohol kmsl
Girl mami wata saved you !! ❤ you went all the way to the bottom that’s crazy ❤
Man this movie was so trash. But like you said it looked good and acting was good too
Don’t Think About It🥰🤣
8:15 LOL
This film was a fail. You don't want to say, bad... Because it was casted well. Shot well and had so much potential, but why did it go this way? Just a waste on so many levels.
I get the ideas behind this but cannot agree it’s even worth watching. Not a waste of time but I’d def give it a 2/5 at best.
Kinda sounds like dirty pretty things
Just watched it, very boring and confusing for no Reason but bad writing.
Fran Drescher is unrecognizable in this
FRAN IS IN THIS????😳😳
I just watched the whole movie I didn't see her!!
7.8 - too much water
This movie was SOOOO bad
unbelievablely slow, dry & badd
The movie boasts to be a psychological horror, this is misleading, its a boring disjointed drag , that goes nowhere. Most films that are winners at Sundance have similar traits, this is shot like a tv movie of the 90s, has no hallmarks of a horror, therefore this is dishonest marketing. Nanny is a uninteresting drama that has been elevated to a horror movie, Blumhouse is stretching its name attachment to any project that looks sinister, its a gimmick & a trend to have Blumhouse stamped onto your project . Conclusively, this film is bland , its tired film making that delivers nothing but long , empty dull moments. It has a nice cutting edge catchy poster with Blumhouse label, another example of customised marketing deception, this movie will consume your time & lead you to boredom & frustration.
