- For this video I went back to one of Wyoming's best surfable rapids in the Snake River. First time back after almost a decade to rediscover the magic of this charming little surf scene in the heart of the US. And reconnecting with the inspiring scene that has sent me on the path I'm on today :)

I don’t even surf (I ride BMX) but, Weird Waves and all the subsequent videos on your channel are up there with the best stuff I’ve seen on UA-cam. The hype/stoke really does transcend all sports. I almost surfed the Snake River in Idaho with my car one night! My pals and I were driving up to Canada from Sun Valley late in the night. At a stretch of the highway that hugged the river through a mountainous region that had more sharp curves than any road any of us of had ever seen, speeding like young idiots that we were....we came around a very sharp bend and there was aa giant trash can in the middle of the road. Just as we were about to collide with it, it spread a 6-foot wingspan and took off cleared the windsheild by inches. We all freaked out and I almost drove us off the road at 60moh into the raging Snake River just feet below us. I literally shit myself..... true story! :) We screamed in unison: "WTF was that?!??!" It was a massive Great Horned Owl. 3 feet tall! 6 foot wingspan.

Very cool...surfed for decades, have not gotten in the water in a while. My energy is down, I just turned 55 and I think I need to get a dose of nature.

Check out these videos called Cheese Wave Series, where some Canadian lads use interesting 'river boards' (kind of like a very heavy bodyboard with handles all around) to ride standing river waves, and even invented tricks for it like board flips, board spins, and front flips. You may like that Dylan if you see this.

I am just wondering if river surfing feels the same as a normal wave
Elements of it feel the same, others feel totally different.
How about promoting visitation to the numerous wave parks that local governments and organizations spent millions of dollars to attract people to? Go ahead and share the video and stoke of the natural spots without outing their location. It's a very small consideration to make on behalf of the local surf communities in those spots. Plus, maybe it will encourage some dedicated rippers to go discover new spots, there are so many out there for those willing to put in the work!
Totally agree. On all points. And believe me I put a lot of effort into making sure I do the best I can to do my due diligence on all of these. However, after speaking with the locals I was with. And the current amount of content that has already been put out on this spot. I think certain spots reach a point where they become known. At what stage do you move passed it being a “secret” and start to address things for what they are ? Searching for new solutions instead of trying to guard something for what it no longer is. A simple google will reveal there are hundreds of videos on the internet about this spot. None of which seem to get anywhere near the amount of heat as I’ve gotten for this. For some reason I seem to get the honor of receiving most of the pent up feelings about this. Happy to help discuss and or project the right messages you want out there about etiquette, safety etc. but I think there are some new outlooks and views required at this stage, for a lot of the surf world (and world for that matter) not just exclusively here
@@DylanGravesYTstoked Dylan for the support of river surfing and the series. I think some of the pent up concern is a main challenge we have in ID, MT, WY can be beginners and intermediate river surfers showing up to high flow situations with out the skills, knowledge, gear, or abilities. So that can put everyone in a tough spot and we have had some significant near misses, rescues needed, etc. So some communities go to 1) filming ok but don’t name the spot, or 2) others want zero filming. Some natural waves don’t have much infrastructure so that can also be a concern. In Boise (man made whitewater park, replaced old dam, built for tourism so slightly different situation) - during very high flows its also a similar challenge. The city has some Advanced/Expert Only signage and we try to give the inexperienced some one on one discussions when they show up. We also started the A.L.O.H.A campaign at ISA to get some basic info out. Any thoughts on how to reach more folks on this type of issue? Mahalo

Always love your storytelling! You should go check out the new wave pool in the Netherlands, it is built right in the city centre of Rotterdam! It also has a cool story to tell. The Dutch surf scene doesn’t really get international attention so it would be cool to see you shine some light on it with this new wave!

As an river surfer from Munich from the 90th it is so nice to see you old school guys surfing river.
But you all have ankel leashes....?
I get caugt underwater and the leash tear up by luck...
There is no !! chance to open the leash if get caught under water.
We old school should inform about the risk!!

@@DylanGravesYT Hi and thank you for your response. You have NO chance to open the leash on the ankel and I think higher too, in heavy current, there are different types og safety leashes for river surfing on the marked, I think the one arround the waist is maybee the best? check google.

Advertising this place to the masses without concealing the specifics of the location burns all the locals. It is a prime example of the tragedy of the commons. This place is extremely dangerous, has killed people in the past, and the crowds are becoming a big problem as social media and UA-camrs continue to abuse it. - A friendly local

There's times I need a reminder that good solid down to earth humans are still around. Times when that love hate relationship with surfing, life and the world in general shifts towards the negative.
Watching any of your work helps bring it back to the positive. Your genuine stoke, open-mindedness, humility and willingness to not make it about you is refreshing. To see that same attitude reflected by the people around you makes me happy.
I've said this before but I'll say it again: I wish there were more good humans like you in the world.

I've been surfing and watching surf movies/videos since 1985. Weird waves (Vans/Dylan), your personal vlog, surfing these novelties, etc, and Maps to Nowhere (O'neill), are the most refreshing new videos to come from surfing, in a long, long time....IMO. I guess I'm saying I'm old, maybe? Ha! Mostly I'm saying thanks for making these, Dylan. It's awesome to see the relationships formed from the journey, as much as the surfing itself. Keep it up!

@@DylanGravesYT We are a community in crisis, overwhelmed by outside visitation that we cannot support. Even the chamber of commerce and WY tourism board recognize this problem and have changed their approach to promotion. Share the footage, share the stoke but keep the location to yourself.

My brother always talked about this wave. He would surf it a lot when he lived there. Obviously things all have to align for it to break but him teaching me how dangerous it can be was so interesting
Epic! Yeah definitely a rad spot. Like all river waves there’s so much water you definitely gotta know what you’re doing. I guess I’ve done a few videos on river waves now and touched on the safety side of it I felt like I was a broken record including that side of it but I should’ve included that in this anyways.
What a great video Dylan! You are correct, this wave can and did change my life. I moved to Jackson, Wy from So Cal in 1991 and surfed there till 1994. During that time my friend and I were featured of a national Toyota 4Runner TV commercial surfing there. Oh what a feeling! The following year we banked enough money to take a sweet surf trip to Costa Rica and that started a 30 plus year love affair with that country. Good times...Pura Vida!

They make booties but they’ve been hesitant to get in the wetsuit game, but maybe they should … so many people hit me up about the suits. They get them made by a brand called maxim. Absolute best suits I’ve ever worn 💯
