Off topic. My mom and dad were history buffs and took us kids everywhere…..we went to Monticello and I was about 13. I put my gerbil “Mr. Wiggly” in the binoculars case. To this day, I will never forget letting him run that house, outside too on a fence. My brother laughed, but that gerbil checked things out then got back in the case.
One thing I've always been proud of is that I share the same birthday as Thomas Jefferson. But 200 yrs apart.his in 1743 and mine in 1943. which led to my interest and following of his life. Thanks for sharing this.ECF
This was really good. I had such a strong feeling of being pulled back in time as if I was actually there. I consider it an honor that I'm a distant cousin to Jefferson, Adams and Washington. And my 7th great grandmother was the step grandmother of Benjamin Franklin.

For the record on Jefferson’s owning of slaves…. Do some reading and research to actually Learn about the people you’re so quick to judge ! Jefferson’s best friend growing up was a black slave kid , almost the same age. Jefferson didn’t purchase slaves himself, he reluctantly inherited slaves from his father and his father in-law. Even before the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson, working in the British controlled Virginia government, proposed the law to stop the import of slaves AND the outright abolition of slavery in Virginia…. Obviously his proposals were denied every time. Jefferson also included these same ideas in the original draft of the Declaration of Independence… but it too was removed. Due to the fragile nature of passing the agreement of independence itself. So, you may ask why he didn’t free the slaves of his own, at least ? A little common sense will explain that if he’d done so, they would’ve surely been captured by surrounding slave owners and put back into slavery somewhere else, most likely in harsh treatment. Thomas Jefferson and his friend James Madison were two of the best founding fathers. We were extremely fortunate to have them ! We Sorely need their statesmanship today !
Yes, historical context. People should not use the social norms of our time when judging someone from the past. Unfortunately there are many people that don't understand that.
He started out reluctant but once saw how lucrative they were had a change of heart. He purposely bred slave children because the return of profit was attractive.
One of the greatest presidents that helped our country grow so much. Yes he owned slaves but he did lots of good for the country too and stopped the trade of slavery. It was a different time period. It’s like people today finding out a hundred years later that phones and screens actually harm things and actually harmful. Slavery was bad but different time period and Jefferson did want it to end. Just like how Ukraine and guns are hot topics today, slavery was a hot topic hard to just win easily. Jefferson didn’t even defend slavery he wanted it to end

If we, as citizens, don't judge people according to their time, we've become the very generation that will start the downfall of our country. Just because Jefferson owned slaves does not take away his brilliance and his accomplishments. That being said, we should absolutely criticize him for it, even though it was 1800. However, also important to note that his views on slavery evolved over time and he has expressed discomfort about the morals of slavery.
Author of the “Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom”.. hear that christian nationalists?!! Btw, the FIRST amendment states that congress “shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion…” it says RELIGION!! If congress, the writers of the bill of rights, founders, etc.. had wanted this to be BY LAW a Christian nation, they would have made it so!!! The first amendment would have said church, not “an establishment of religion”!! We would be paying taxes in support of a church, we would have passed (or kept) laws for the prosecution of the “crime” of heresy!!! George Washington wouldn’t have written a letter to a Jewish constituent telling him that this country was welcome to him too! I could go on!! There wouldn’t be a provision in the CONSTITUTION that says there shall be no religious tests for serving in public office!! I defend your right to believe whatever you wish!! But don’t you start trying to force your warped “morals” on me!! I’m a Christian!!!

Good for you! I’m glad you can sleep at night! You have a lot of ancestors who were slaves. I don’t think they thought so highly of them.
We need a modern-day Jefferson in this country

At least we now know the answer to the Sally Hemmings question.
The founding fathers had strong beliefs on using gold and silver for money. And on the dangers of paper money.
Nearly everyone can rationalize wrongdoing when it involes their money. Historical legends not excluded
Rarely in history do so many great minds meet like around 1776 in America!

Thomas Jefferson was a racist. His actions speak louder than his words. Even the devil himself appears as an angel of light.

How did he justify owning 600 slaves given his writing quoted here?
If you watch you’ll hear the answer.
He just said that all men were born free. Then why did he own slaves? And women had no right to vote?
