    Thanks for this. I was trying to strike the road flare on the ground because it looks like a giant match. And I didn’t have my glasses, so I couldn’t read the instructions which are black on red and difficult to make out. So your UA-cam saved the day. I handed some lit road flares off to a stranger in need. Thank you so much.

    This was an awesome tutorial video. Saw them used by others before, but never did it myself. I don't see people have them in their trunks as much as I used to back in the day, but serious planning on buying them for the entire family. Thanks alot for the safety tips.

    Flares also work really well for starting a fire when the material you are burning is a little wet.

    Road flares tend to spit and sputter a little bit normally. Yours was doing it more because you had it at an upward angle. The easiest way to put them out is actually to drop them burning end down straight onto pavement. If you do it right you will hear a muffled pop like a quiet firecracker and it will go out. I have used a lot of these over the years. Also they should be used in a group of 3. Place them behind your vehicle at 50, 100, and 150 feet away.

    Great video, I used to carry a handful of road flares in the trunk of my call at all times. I got them from an auto parts store I was working at, but many cars ago I took them out and now I don't know what happened to them.

    New ones spew out those pieces as well. There neat I think the main problem is since they are a one use item people are sometimes worried about wasting them if it's a not a serious accident.

    If you don't have water to extinguish it, pick it up and hold it upside down with the lit portion facing the ground, and drop it from about 4-5 feet off the ground straight down so the lit portion makes full contact to the ground. Should hear a large pop noise and it'll extinguish.

    When I was a Long Haul trucker, I was a "North End Driver". I ran from Texas and the Southwest up in to Canada like to Edmonton Alberta in the winter. We called these things "FUSSEES". I have NEVER used them for a road side issue. We used them to Thaw out Frozen Air Lines, air tanks etc though. You know, the brake and windshield wiper system. They are not super good for that, it depends on where it is frozen. Also JELLED Diesel fuel. Anything frozen we would try them. So we used them up for that. When we showed up at an accident we were always OUT. Or the other drives would steal them. they are HARD to keep up with when you have more than ONE person working somewhere. BB

    Just want to add a few things here. Most flares contain red phosphorus in the striker which is actually pretty poisonous, wear gloves. You don't want to be breathing any of the vapors or smoke that come out of those things, very bad. The bits exploding off were bits of whatever metal the pyro is based on and paper wrapping, you don't want this stuff on you, not only will you get a nasty heat burn, you'll also get a chemical burn on top of that

  • @oTamusima

    that method of yours looks great for drawing molds :)
    i am looking into using a flare and a welding tip and connector to precision craft items with a 3d printer base.
    also working ot use a 2d base using multiple 3d bases to develop large areas faster.
    this is under the bottom of a manufactured home crafted with scaleable cubes as small as 4inches or with a longstrap reprap modification from your local parts

  • @3kcc

  • @tomaszstarling

    After the first 1.5 inches it is easy to put out because the magnesium additive is gone from the top of flare then just choke the flare in sand or rock and you can reuse.

    That "spewing out little pieces" is normal, old or new flare. It's phosphorous.

  • @shockwavecity
    @shockwavecity 11 років тому +1

    Nope. The striker at the top has red phosphorus in it which is hot enough to kick off the reaction (usually flares are metal based). You wouldn't be able to get a flame hot enough short of another flare or something like that.

  • @Ferrant621
    @Ferrant621 11 років тому +2

    Jeff! Speaking of knowing how things work, it would be wise to know that flares contain potassium perchlorate before using one. This chemical contains four oxygen atoms that will disassociate from the molecule and feed the fire without the need for atmospheric oxygen! VERY important to know if you plan on smothering it. It shouldn't have gone out underwater, that is very odd. I've completely buried one under a few inches of dirt and it continued to burn.

    • @djcfrompt
      @djcfrompt Рік тому +1

      Water doesn't only put out fire by removing oxygen/smothering, it also puts out fire by cooling materials below the point where they can continue to burn. That's likely what happened here.
