Jesus Christ 2:30 is where he actually demonstrates how to light a road flare, you dumbass. Why do you care what other people want to watch? Get a life, dipshit.
Thanks for this. I was trying to strike the road flare on the ground because it looks like a giant match. And I didn’t have my glasses, so I couldn’t read the instructions which are black on red and difficult to make out. So your UA-cam saved the day. I handed some lit road flares off to a stranger in need. Thank you so much.
This was an awesome tutorial video. Saw them used by others before, but never did it myself. I don't see people have them in their trunks as much as I used to back in the day, but serious planning on buying them for the entire family. Thanks alot for the safety tips.
I have never actually managed to store a flare for more than one year, I always end up using them for something. Its good to know that old and weathered will still work.
Thank you, I am currently stranded in Alaska after a freak storm crashed my plane, I appreciate this! Hopefully someone will see me or I can use it to start a fire.
Road flares tend to spit and sputter a little bit normally. Yours was doing it more because you had it at an upward angle. The easiest way to put them out is actually to drop them burning end down straight onto pavement. If you do it right you will hear a muffled pop like a quiet firecracker and it will go out. I have used a lot of these over the years. Also they should be used in a group of 3. Place them behind your vehicle at 50, 100, and 150 feet away.
Great video, I used to carry a handful of road flares in the trunk of my call at all times. I got them from an auto parts store I was working at, but many cars ago I took them out and now I don't know what happened to them.
New ones spew out those pieces as well. There neat I think the main problem is since they are a one use item people are sometimes worried about wasting them if it's a not a serious accident.
For people who have a pet peeve for actually listening to the instructions, learn to use the skip button instead of complaining! Some people want to actually listen!
@@spongebobfunnyy A digital area on the screen, whether marked visible at all times or invisible until triggered, is still a button. Or an option if you really wanna get into political correctness about it. So?
Thank you for showing me how to do this, I'm not good with instructions, would have probably ended up burning my hair and my car first without your video!!
If you don't have water to extinguish it, pick it up and hold it upside down with the lit portion facing the ground, and drop it from about 4-5 feet off the ground straight down so the lit portion makes full contact to the ground. Should hear a large pop noise and it'll extinguish.
When I was a Long Haul trucker, I was a "North End Driver". I ran from Texas and the Southwest up in to Canada like to Edmonton Alberta in the winter. We called these things "FUSSEES". I have NEVER used them for a road side issue. We used them to Thaw out Frozen Air Lines, air tanks etc though. You know, the brake and windshield wiper system. They are not super good for that, it depends on where it is frozen. Also JELLED Diesel fuel. Anything frozen we would try them. So we used them up for that. When we showed up at an accident we were always OUT. Or the other drives would steal them. they are HARD to keep up with when you have more than ONE person working somewhere. BB
Just want to add a few things here. Most flares contain red phosphorus in the striker which is actually pretty poisonous, wear gloves. You don't want to be breathing any of the vapors or smoke that come out of those things, very bad. The bits exploding off were bits of whatever metal the pyro is based on and paper wrapping, you don't want this stuff on you, not only will you get a nasty heat burn, you'll also get a chemical burn on top of that
that method of yours looks great for drawing molds :) i am looking into using a flare and a welding tip and connector to precision craft items with a 3d printer base. also working ot use a 2d base using multiple 3d bases to develop large areas faster. this is under the bottom of a manufactured home crafted with scaleable cubes as small as 4inches or with a longstrap reprap modification from your local parts
Would it still work if you cut the burned top and strike it again? Great video, its really simple to use but you don't want to panic in a dangerous situation. Thanks
After the first 1.5 inches it is easy to put out because the magnesium additive is gone from the top of flare then just choke the flare in sand or rock and you can reuse.
Surprised you're a young guy , these should be in all vehicles and people should know how to use them, a basic skill that could save your life more ways than one ,good job most dudes your age dont even know what one is
Nope. The striker at the top has red phosphorus in it which is hot enough to kick off the reaction (usually flares are metal based). You wouldn't be able to get a flame hot enough short of another flare or something like that.
Jeff! Speaking of knowing how things work, it would be wise to know that flares contain potassium perchlorate before using one. This chemical contains four oxygen atoms that will disassociate from the molecule and feed the fire without the need for atmospheric oxygen! VERY important to know if you plan on smothering it. It shouldn't have gone out underwater, that is very odd. I've completely buried one under a few inches of dirt and it continued to burn.
Water doesn't only put out fire by removing oxygen/smothering, it also puts out fire by cooling materials below the point where they can continue to burn. That's likely what happened here.
Awesome like always, I was thinking about doing the mini ones you find at walmart to see how they work. Their only like $4 for 2 minis. I got some to use in my bob but have no idea if their good. Maybe it's time to test! As always, hope your having a great day!
Well, I watched the entire video. Found it all very interesting and informative. Thanks, Jeff, I realized I had flares in my car and didn’t know how to use them. So I found your GREAT video.
you can cut some metal with those too, we have played around with them at times and managed to cut angle iron to size when the chopsaw blade broke, and we were too lazy to fire up a cutting torch.
We run these 30 minute highway flares the most. I run these through a wax machine that also puts the caps on. We keep water buckets Incase of accidental light up. Most of time I'm pretty nose blind the the sulfer smell.
I should add that the instructions I gave are what the DOT recommends. Also FYI. A trucker passing you is much safer then the average car if you where to look up the statistics. Car drivers are much more deadly. The FMCSA reports that 85% of accidents involving semi trucks where found to have a standard vehicle at fault.
Also they shouldn't be in a straight line. The farthest one back should be at the far right edge of the shoulder of the road the second in the middle of the shoulder and the closest one at the fog/white line.
Do you have to be 18 to buy road flares? I'm 16 and recently got my license and car. I've got a flashlight in my car but that's about it any recommendations on what else i should put in my car for emergencies?
So I can just purchase it and ship it to my home? I'm currently living in the US, but in my country these are illegal and need special permit to purchase them... I really want one and put it in my car.
wrong, these are for distracting a T-rex

Yes
Flares also work really well for starting a fire when the material you are burning is a little wet.
I like the talking Jeff. I don't have anyone to teach me this stuff and all your explaining is knowledge for me to soak up. Keep doing what you doing!
I have never actually managed to store a flare for more than one year, I always end up using them for something. Its good to know that old and weathered will still work.
Good intel. I'll admit it, I have road flares but I've never used em!
Thank you, I am currently stranded in Alaska after a freak storm crashed my plane, I appreciate this! Hopefully someone will see me or I can use it to start a fire.
his name is frosty chicken dude hes clearly adapted and is at home living there
Still stranded there?
Has te flare burnt out yet?
Legend says that your flare is still burning

Hey thanks for the video jeff, i know its an older one but as a new driver it was helpful to see a detailed walk through on this. God bless
Perfectly straightforward. Just made my Mom watch this just in case.
You should do more useful PSA's like this.

That "spewing out little pieces" is normal, old or new flare. It's phosphorous.

I like that you would have a road flare in the trunk, but not a flashlight.. Anyways, great video man!
thanks for the vid, I don't have any but if I do, least I know how it works, appreciate it.
you can cut some metal with those too, we have played around with them at times and managed to cut angle iron to size when the chopsaw blade broke, and we were too lazy to fire up a cutting torch.
Tbh I like his voice so Im cool with him talkin.

it is good to know how to do this stuff good vid

Sweet! I love burning stuff too. I carry my bicycle "blinkie" , a BikePlanet turbo Nova in my car...super bright strobe.
If the flare is in the road, kick the non light end straight on and it puts it out in spectacular fashion.
Can you use road flares more than once?
can i respawn where ever i place it?
if you were in the woods, do you think you could dry it and relight it with a fire starting lense or a piece of flint?
I realy enjoyed it, as we don't use road flares in Norway. Never seen a flare other then in the movies.
We run these 30 minute highway flares the most. I run these through a wax machine that also puts the caps on. We keep water buckets Incase of accidental light up. Most of time I'm pretty nose blind the the sulfer smell.
i'll be looking forward to the fire extinguisher video :)

Flares are designed to go out if you drop them directly on the burning end, onto concrete, from 36 inches high.
Thanks Jeff. Have some in my kit for work, luckily I never had to use one!

Thermite flares
i mean magnesium flares not thermite that would be a bad idea

well, there's chem lights that are basically just big ass glow sticks.

does the flare have black powder in it?
