I remember taking Drivers Ed in a back Conference Room on the 2nd floor of the old Sears building in 1999. Also used to get my haircut at Mr Dino's across from JCPenney and went to many birthday parties at the old Aladdin's Castle arcade (next to Mr Dino's). The Food Court development in the 90's was done at the same time as the Skylight outside Boston Store FWIW. Dated a girl in High School that worked at Musicland/Sam Goody. Great nostagia for this mall growing up - thanks for sharing!

I grew up in Brookfield most of my middle-school and high-school years.
4:39 I remember times when the *Food Court* was PACKED, with a queue at _every_ food option. (My abs fav was the Italian Kitchen/Villa on the right-most end that had the closest thing to NY-style 🍕 I could find in that area.)
5:02 That *GameStop* was a staple for over 20yrs. I bought video games, turned-in old games, and just browsed games, probably 100s of times back then.
    I remember:
~ saving up my odd-job 💵 to buy my HS gf(s) jewelry 📿💍 from *Shaw's Jewelers*
~ the multiple *Gruber Law Offices* signs and banner-ads
~ the smells from the *Cinnabon* and that place with the *Stir-Fry name* that always gave out free samples
~ the immature, naughty vibes when talking about (and browsing/shopping in) *Spencer's*
~ buying gamer T-shirts, chain wallets, disco 💡, and black Jnco 👖 from *Hot Topic*
I visited this mall a few weeks ago. It's strange that tons of newer buildings---even a convention center, and a Chic-Fil-A!---have been built *around* the mall, but the mall _itself_ is...mostly empty. 🤷‍♂

I remember visiting this mall with my Mother when I was as a child back in the 1970s.
There used to be a 3 story oil rain art feature in the center area of the mall. It was almost hypnotic to watch as oil slowly dripped down the long strings from ceiling to floor.
I remember watching it in wonder while my Mom waited in line to take me and my siblings to see Santa.
I think that art feature got removed from the mall sometime in the early 80s.
At one time, Brookfield square was the place to shop in that part of the Milwaukee area. So sad to see it in this state now.
The world has changed in the last 20 years.
If I were to pin blame on one thing that brought the demise of this mall (and many others), it is the creation of pervasive online (Internet) shopping with home delivery.
No longer does one shop for products like they used to.
Search engines and interest algorithms bring products and services right before your eyes without having to leave your home.
Worse still, the classic anchor stores didn't catch the technology wave early or fast enough. Their leadership did not see the wave coming. Now those companies are gone... forever.
Think about it - if Sears had the vision for selling products on the Internet before Amazon, they could still be around today. Each anchor store could have been a ready-to-go product distribution point. All Sears had to do was build the web site and create the logistical last-mile delivery services. Sears already had the logistical distribution network between stores.
Sad to see something once so grand... going to ruin.

Another one of those malls I grew up near, and I was either there or at Mayfair a few miles East all the time. By the way, that hourglass fountain was made of Monofilament line with glycerin running down over it. And yes...SEARS had all of the infrastructure in place and closed the catalog business almost at the exact time AMAZON started up. The owners of SEARS were idiots to not know enough about the internet...as opposed to catalog and phone line ordering that they thought was dead--even though they pioneered the concepts of it.

Actually, Sephora sections are leaving all JCPenney stores. And as of this year, those sections are being remodeled and renovated into JCPenney Beauty. Sephora signed a contract with Kohl's, so because of that, those sections are being added to Kohl's stores, and being removed from JCPenney stores as of this fall. Someone else on a different retail group I'm in, found a press release from Sephora that said all their sections within JCPenney stores are closing down between September to December 2022. Moving on from that, great walking tour inside and outside this mall! I hope this mall hangs on, myself.

Thank you so much for this. I have very fond memories of visiting in the 1980s and 1990s, particularly during the holiday season. It was an annual tradition to sit on Santa's lap at Brookfield Square, and for my parents to go toy shopping at KayBee Toys. I remember when there was still a Woolworth's at the mall as well, and when GameStop was Babbages, and when the "new" food court was installed in the 1990s. I remember shopping at Hot Topic for a birthday present for my elementary school crush, and not being allowed to go into Spencer's Gifts, and waiting for my mom to finish up at Boston Store while sitting next to the natural trees in the atrium. Beautiful memories of this place.

My most vivid Brookfield Square memory was a day after Thanksgiving back in the 70s. It was so busy they had police redirecting traffic because the parking lot ran out of spots to park in. This was my favorite mall in the Milwaukee area. I was amazed by the beautiful blue-green water sculpture showcased in the center of the mall. Wonderful times shopping with my mom.

They built this when I was a kid. When indoor malls were new, it was an experience and you enjoyed spending time there. You went shopping for many things at once and it was relevantly convenient to other options. Now relative to other options, the mall can be an ordeal. Kind of like flying. In the old days you dressed up and went to the airport and enjoyed the miracle of getting from A to B in record time. Now you put on your cut offs and flip flops and freak out if your flight is delayed one hour. Of course with flying there are still no other options. So if you are looking to buy one thing, you would rather drive right up to the front door and get what you want or order and have delivered. Malls have become inconvenient relative to the other options for many shopping needs.

It is kinda shocking and a bit sad to see how quickly shopping malls have been abandon. I recall reading that rent was pretty high, which raised the overhead, and so stores had to charge more just to cover it. After the mall's heyday of the 1980s, by the mid 90s I had pretty much stopped going to "the mall" because of how much more expense things were at the mall and the because of the crowds. I think maybe a lot of people felt the same way, and the novelty just wore off.

    • @ohasis8331

It's typical of mall owners to gouge tennants. I recall one leasee I knew having me come in one day and observing a mall representative observing for several hours the foot traffic and turnover of his store. They tailor the rents according to the monthly take. The mall facilitates leasees to make money but the mall is a bit like a protection racket in that it parasites the increased sales of the leasee instead of a fixed lease.

Man what a bummer! I haven't been back home in awhile (couldn't pay me to move back!) but this is sad. Mayfair and Southridge started getting rather, shall we say, unsavory over the last 10-15 years. Brookfield was the only one I really wanted to go to and even then, not so much. I don't like crowds, I don't want to witness crimes, and we don't really need any more stuff. Most of what we buy, aside from food, is easily and inexpensively purchased from local thrift and consignment stores as well as rummage sales and whatnot.
I loved malls as a kid, especially during the Christmas season. All the trees and lights were so magical to me. This is sad to see but not surprising.

When Brookfield Square opened there were really five anchor stores. The three mentioned in your video, Sears, JC Penney and Boston Store. In addition to those, it can be argued, that TA Chapman's and Kohl's Food Store, were also anchors.
TA Chapman's was a smaller department store chain here in Milwaukee. There are remnants of the roof line from this store that are visible towards the rear of Bravo Italian Kitchen. Chapman's, as it more known by, had interior access from center court and from the east central corridor. There was also exterior access as well, roughly to the right of Bravo. I do not recall how many locations TA Chapman's had, maybe four, not including a flagship store downtown in the 400 block of East Wisconsin Ave; that building was razed to make way for the 411 E. Wisconsin Tower.
Kohl's Food Store was the preeminent grocery store chain in SE Wisconsin. The location at Brookfield Square was open until the early to mid 80's and closed to make way for several other stores and Houlihan's Old Place restaurant. Today this location is now Barnes and Noble and Red Robin. I do recall Kohl's had exterior access and do not think there was interior access.

Brick and mortar stores of all kinds are becoming less popular. Only the most unique or very specialized stores are likely to do well and not in a mall. People don't have time nor do they need to shop in malls. They can go online, compare offerings and prices, push a button and get their goods within a day, if they need it that fast.
While there are people that enjoy shopping on their feet, most either don't have the time to do so or don't like the exercise.

We created this mess by being lazy and buying Chinese crap from Amazon, last November I stop buying online and shop local and have to say I missed the experience of talking to a real person. If we want to help our economy and not BEZOS wallet shop local and especially at Christmas out old Town in twin falls is like wonderland and makes me happy for a change with what's going on

This person has genuinely no idea what they are taking about. How is this even remotely a dead mall? South ridge sure but Brookfield square 😂

Brookfield Mall has a lot of vacancy and low amount of shoppers. Not to mention not a lot of food options either like before covid.
Southridge mall is not dead at all, more shoppers and stores and food options.
I've been to Brookfield Square AND Southridge recently, Brookfield definitely needs to recover from losing so much business after the pandemic started or else it will get worse.

What are you talking about? Southridge is doing way better than Brookfield Square. Brookfield Square is like half empty. Southridge is mostly full minus the vacant Boston Store and Kohl's.
