Thanks for posting this . It's a great piece of American history and hopefully the traditions will continue . The call of the auctioneer is the song that built Winston Salem North Carolina.
I was an auctioneer once. Loved those days that have gone by. I watch Sandy L Houston and I think he is a very iconic Auctioneer and does an awesome job. I could watch this thousands of times and still be impressed. I didnt know that they moved right along at a tobacco auction. Me, I would stand over each lot looking for and calling bids from the potential buyers as I chant. I guess I do things a bit different.
Sandy Houston was one of the instructors when I went to auction school over 26 years ago. I have heard literally thousands of auctioneers in my lifetime and Sandy is, to me, the best sounding that I have ever heard.
1;09 "Yes Sir honey what do you need ? The guy doesn't miss a single beat and defuses the conflict in under a second . How can any tempers rise or control be lost with a reply like that coming from that man ?
It’s been a few years, but I met Sandy at Mendenhall school of auctioneering in high point NC I’ve also met Maya Angelou. I hate that Sandy’s job was made obsolete to prevent price fixing. He seemed very aware he was lucky not to have been prosecuted in the conspiracy. Only 7 major buyers who withheld bids to buy a hard harvest at less than FMV(fair market value) If you ever meet Sandy Houston he is charismatic. That’s why he’s the ultimate tobacco auctioneer. Plus there’s that whole “Sold American”and “walk a mile” thing he does. I spent more time talking to Maya Angelou than Sandy and I was star ⭐️ struck by both of them. They both have this presence. Maya passed long ago and Sandy is still alive. His best joke was about asking a radio personality to start the bid at anything other other than 66, then he went off on this “66 you son of bitch” Honestly I didn’t get the joke, but he made it funny and we all were in auctioneering school and having a world champ there was awesome 😎
Dad had a beach house at cherry Grove s.c. Another of cottage owners gave their home a name. Dad's sign said Sold American! He went to work for American tobacco Co in 1957 and moved up the ranks and upon retirement was vice president of manufacturing for American brands. Knew Sandy Huston very well. SOLD AMERICAN!!
I was a live auctioneer for several years. I have never seen an auctioneer and auction move right along just as this video shows. Found this very interesting.
I would love to see what the closed captions would translate this as. This computer is smart but I highly doubt it could communicate with these guys. It was clear as day to the trained and confusing at best to the untrained #loveTobbaccoAuctions
It's so sad to see tobacco taken from the farms! I remember my dad telling me him, and his dad bought a farm in 1972 for $10,000.00. In 1973 the first tobacco crop they raised paid for the place!
I just searched it on you tube. I saw this video when I was in auctioneers school about 20 years ago. He was them and still is one of the best I've ever heard.
He repeats the value of the current bid, not like an auction of other things, where the desired bid is repeated. I can hear him repeat the names of the winner of a bid: Lorillard, RJR, American.
If you listened long enough, you started to be able to figure out what the auctioneer was saying, which was nothing more than the starting price of a pile or bale, then the prices that had been bid by the buyers, and then the name of the company the auctioneer knocked the pile or bale to. Or "co-op" if no company met the government support price. (I'm a former tobacco buyer)

That is my hometown. Amazing heritage. Tobacco naturally is in my blood
I love listening to Sandy; he is the BEST OF THE BEST.
I could listen to this guy every day and never get tired of it
better rapper than 99.99% of rappers out there.
So is my dead grandmother

The way he handles his breathing so seamlessly is amazing

Joe Massey question. Are they bidding on the whole row. Or each individual pile
Each pile
Have to ask, what auction school was you and Sandy at? I was self educated, and done many great auctions.
Yessss sir!!
One other novice question. Why did they stop in the middle? Was that an intentional snag they put in to catch him? Thanks. I love Sandy's filler.
worked for a wirehouse in greeneville, tennessee in the '70's. got to meet and here sandy many times.
Love it brings back sooooo many memories

Is there a connection between maya angelou and the auctioneer guy or are you just throwing it in there since you met her too?

. Sandy Houston is a class act.
That is what you call a good auctioneer
No. This is what you call a great auctioneer.

I used to love to go to the sales in Clarkton and Whiteville.

I had the pleasure of working with sandy at a auto auction in NC he is a frist class guy
I'm a millennial. Gosh I miss this.

Absolutely awesome
The best in my opinion
He is definitely the best tobacco auctioneer I've ever heard.
Damn, I'd love to see this guy go into a pentacostal chuch and talk in tongues with the best of them
Is that jerry clower at the beginning introducing him?
It sure sounded like him! I wondered the same thing. I think it probably is.
Yes it is, good catch! He hosted the event a few times. Really miss these days, especially as I get older.
RJR Tobacco Company had a habit of bringing stars from entertainment and business to town over the years.
I feel like this is the same guy who sells me, well, everything.
That’s my uncle
The announcer is clearly saying "Sandy L. Schuster."
Where did you get this? I'm trying to get the entire video and the year Michael Cutts won?
I just searched it on you tube. I saw this video when I was in auctioneers school about 20 years ago. He was them and still is one of the best I've ever heard.
SOLD TO AN AMERICAN!!!
Sold American...American Tobacco Company.
Real men wear pink and Sandy Houston was similar to Cirque du Soleil
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He literally sounds like he's singing a song
I'd hate to be a sign language interpreter for this dude.

I'd need subtitles

❤️
I have actually looked for a longer video and can't find another one.
Sounds like rap music without the "N-words" & "F-Bombs" and the drum machine in the background. 🙄🤪
He's good, but he's no Speedy Riggs.

Must be pretty boring where auctioneers become rock stars.
