Yanaka Ginza Street Food: Best Bites in Tokyo’s Old-Fashioned Cat Town

While it’s located just a short walk from Nippori Station on the JR Yamanote line which connects Tokyo’s major city centers, somehow Yanaka Ginza feels eons away from the modern capital. This is one of the very few areas that has somehow managed to survive natural disasters and the air raids of World War II, retaining its charming old town feel.
As it used to be home to many street cats, Yanaka Ginza became known as Tokyo’s Cat Town and the “manekineko” (lucky cat) is the unofficial mascot of the area. Today, there aren’t so many street cats left, but seven cat statues can be spotted by the eagle-eyed all around the shopping district.
Yanaka Ginza’s “Yuuyake Dandan” (Sunset Steps) has been featured in many anime and TV programs, and is a great viewpoint from which to see the shopping street and, if you’re lucky, catch the sunset.
While the shopping street is only around 170 meters long, Yanaka Ginza street food spots are plentiful, along with souvenir shops, ceramic stores, grocery shops, and more. Yanaka Ginza’s cheap and tasty traditional street food is a major draw for visitors who want to fill up without shelling out too much cash.
