An awesome review of minis once again, I really enjoyed it! I’m a D&D player primarily but I collect both Pathfinder and D&D minis. Pathfinder is an amazing source of good PC miniatures.
Thank you kindly! Sounds like me! I am enjoying these Pathfinder minis. I'm eager to see what they're going to do for second edition minis coming out soon! -Theo
The Last Laugh lately I’ve noticed that most of my encounters are in the wilderness so this was great on my end. Gave me some ideas for future projects too. Great video. Plus that Knight was crazy cool. I love the design.
@@FrankyDCrafter yeah it is a good set I brought mine on the secondary market so I could pick and choose which ones I wanted. Grabbed a few Pitax Wardens as they make great little guard encounters.
You said you don't have that much experience in Pathfinder, but the descriptions were very good! Also, I loved that you mentions Ravnica sometimes! Hahaha
Thank you! Hopefully that means we've done our research well. It's really fun to learn the lore and Pathfinder has a very dynamic world. Ravnica is my (Grady's) favorite D&D setting so I definitely am happy to get it in the script when possible, though the references in Kingmaker were Theo's additions.
I do like these minis , l like the way you display the mini and describe them , l played DnD in high school , my kids have begun to pick it up when we went into quarentine bin March , since then my folks found all my DnD stuff in the attic , so my kids and l have been crafting terrain ... I didn't have any minis , they were too expensive back then , we used chess pieces and checkers. But the kids really like the active encounters you get with figures and terrain. They love steampunk so it has been... Well , interesting. Thank you for your reviews , they are entertainment and education.
For the Pitax Warden mini I have an encounter where it’s an animated armor who is sentient but after 100 + years it’s starting to loose it’s memory and sense of time. It’s now the ever standing guard for his fallen kings tomb, not realizing it’s been many years since his king fell. He was with the king since birth and with the family for years before then. They will find out that the family was the major nobility of the area where they find the tomb. I hope they can help it understand that the family it was serving is no longer around instead of just killing it and looting the tomb
I'm glad you find these helpful! There's definitely situations where Pathfinder has minis of creatures Icons hasn't released minis for yet so those are always helpful. I actually have a slight preference for Pathfinder Battles humanoid minis (for NPC and PC use). Their paint jobs and poses are almost always really dynamic to me, though this is not a blanket statement and Icons has its fair share of those minis that are cool as well. -Grady
Thanks Cory! Those two sets are ones we’re super excited about. Due to the way our work queue is set up, they’re not going to be the immediate next videos coming out, but they are in progress!
Nice set of miniatures and Nnce detailed review with lots of helpful tips! I ran a Pathfinder campaign for a while (Rise of the Runelords) , but at higher levels I find the game gets kind of out of control. At least for me as a GM. I tried the Kingmaker video game and was interested for a very short while, but it got too confusing to follow and I didn't get very far into it.
Thanks for the feedback, Rangersly! I'll probably jump into Pathfinder when 2.0 is out. Eager to see how it differs from 5e Dungeons and Dragons. -Theo
You know, Giants are large in Pathfinder 1e because it evolved from D&D 3.5. In 3.5 giants were large creatures, not huge. Well some were huge, but not until you got to cloud and storm giants. But that is why the giants of Pathfinder are large. Not sure exactly when they increased the general size of Giants, but I suspect it was around 4th.
@@TheGallantGoblin They look almost futuristic to me with the alien, eyeslit-less helmets and weird swords. Honestly, they remind me of the creepy alien insectoid knight-soldiers from the Krull movie, if you remember that. :)
I use them for steel golems and Shield Guardians. Their pauldrons would not allow a humanoid a proper range of motion; they'd essentially move like robots anyway.
I see you got an interesting distribution too, lot of people noted it on Minisgallery that there were duplicates of the bush, gargoyle and scarecrow dungeon dressing in the cases. Aren't these usually "Rare*" ones and come only as 1 per case each? Maybe they filled the space of the one missing Large Uncommon with these.
Based on Lastwall and Kingmaker you get 2 set dressing per brick (plus your regular 3 rares, meaning you get 5 boxes in each brick with some type of rare). That means 8 set dressing total. Since Kingmaker had 5 set dressing pieces, we got 3 duplicates. Lastwall had 6 so we only got 2 duplicates. -Grady
@@TheGallantGoblin Interesting! I guess older sets have more types of dressings. Makes me wonder again whether this set was rushed to coincide with the video game's release. Do the dressings take up the space of a Common or an Uncommon in the boosters? I see in your booster distribution part of the video that the throne replaced a Large in the set? Odd as it is not that big in size.
Sorry for taking so long to reply-some college buddies were visiting this weekend so we haven't had time to step away. It looks like the Barbarian Throne and the Raised Dais were the ones in this set that took the place of a Large. In Ruins of Lastwall, the Torture Rack, Funerary Bed, and Crypt Wall all took the place of a Large. If they are not replacing a large, the set dressing pieces replace a Common. -Grady
@@TheGallantGoblin Not a problem - I was so busy all week too I could only come back to reply now! And yes I see it now in the distribution. I was surprised, as until now I think these dungeon dressings did not replace the Large in the set. I once found a cart in a Rusty Dragon booster, and I think there was still a Large in the booster... or at least I recall so. I need to check back on my photos from the time :)
paint job on the dais looks pretty sloppy for an ultra rare ...overall though I really do like this set, looks like it would fill out my collection quite nicely
Nice review once again! My hat goes off to you, I see you have done your research to check what D&D creatures many of the renamed beasts are (copyright reasons for things like Web Lurkers and Caligni, I am told) and even to know what named NPCs the ruffian minis are! I assume you checked on the Minisgallery discussions of the set? ;) I have to say quality wise the set is rather bad. Many minis have bad sculpts or bad paint problems. The worst is easily the bush, and the ant swarm and the horribly painted dweomercat - as you say, the art of it looked far better. I see your Gargoyle has problems sitting, too. I used the boiling hot+ice cold water trick to fix mine - works well with this harder plastic, unlike the old DDM rubbery ones. The crowning jewel of the set is easily the Ogre Mage. Perhaps because I grew up with 2E and Baldur's Gate was my first CRPG foray into D&D, I will always imagine these guys dressed in samurai armor wielding katanas, and this mini is perfect. Honestly, it looks detailed enough to be a Rare, while the 4 Rares are really underwhelming especially the Ahuizotl that could be easily an Uncommon. Rumor has it, it might as well HAS been an Uncommon. The reason there are only 43 and not 44 (plus dungeon dressing) minis in this, there was supposed to be an Ankou mini (shadowy bird like fey assassins) but production issues prevented it from being in the set. Likely they took out the Ahuizotl and made it a Rare, hence why we only have 7 Large Uncommons. Honestly this set has some of the worse Large Rares... Apart from the Frost Giant Jarl who is nice, but in Icons of the realms would be an Uncommon, the others are not nearly cool enough to warrant that rarity. The Devourer has a rather bland look and the soul is barely visible on his chest. And I am still surprised how small PF Cyclopes are... They are barely 7-8 feet tall, I think - they could easily fit on a Medium base. The Cyclops Oracle suffers from the same problem. I only gotten a few minis from the set myself - still need to find the Manticore who is very expensive now on the secondary market. My other favourite is the Fey Dragon, adorable and really well painted.
Thanks, it's always nice to hear when we get things right! Theo wrote the script so I'm not sure where he got some of the info from, but we did have access to the actual text of the adventure path this time so that helped a lot too. I hadn't noticed the set being low quality, but I also agree about the flaws on the specific minis you highlighted. We've taken to calling the dweomercats "skunk cats" which is a tad unfortunately given their art is not skunk-like at all. After we filmed the set dressing I realized that we had two set dressing gargoyles and other one was not warped, haha. But yes the one we showed will need to be reshaped a bit. It is interesting to hear about the production issues. It did seem weird they only had 43 sculpts, though they sort of made up for it with two very nice premium figures (the water and earth elementals). The Fey Dragon is definitely one of the best properly sized (sorry Otto) faerie dragon minis out there! -Grady
@@TheGallantGoblin LOl yeah I keep forgetting there are 2 of you answering with the same account. Indeed the adventure path has a lot of the info needed. Paizo has a blog and they mentioned the left out Ankou there, that's where I heard about it. I am hopeful it gets added to a later set.
13:32 - you are totally right. For some weird reason, Wizkids now has made 2 Werebears and 1 Weretiger minis and all of them are of incorrect size, they should be Large. Also, this Weretiger is a really bad sculpt with worse paint, barely any stripes and oddly naked pink paws and feet. I do wish they instead based the mini on Tos Katun from the Jade Regent adventure path - a much better design. The wrong size is a pet peeve of mine, because sadly this means we only have the old Angelfire mini in the correct size, which isn't very detailed or good.
Thanks for the comment! I can understand the size mistakes based on the way they label the statblocks, but I wish there was someone doing a better job checking for these mistakes before they go into production. A large-sized, modern Hybrid Weretiger would be impressive! As for Tos Katun, I'm not sure if I'm emotionally ready for a tiger in a bra. :-P -Theo
@@TheGallantGoblin Wizkids started a feedback line a month ago - supposed to send us questionaires if you subscribe (you can find the topic on Minisgallery) but so far, nothing happened. I wish they would ask, as this would be one of the first things I'd tell them. :) It's especially maddening when they made the mistake first with the Icons Tomb of Annihilation Werebear, then with the PFB one in Maze of Death too a month or so later. As for Tos Katun - that's actually +1 enchanted studded leather armor according to her stat block, LOL! I guess it's an universal law, like in computer games, that if you equip the (on male characters) full-body-covering armor on a female character, it suddenly turns into a super revealing outfit. :D Joke aside, I'd prefer a female Weretigress because in 1E-2E lore-wise, Weretigers were almost exclusively female.
I haven't personally seen a lot of engagement with the community at all from the Wizkids folks. Maybe I need to be watching individual people rather than company social media accounts. One of the Wizkids employees did seem to recognize me at D&D Live in LA in May, but otherwise they've never connected with us in any way. Would be great to see them ask for feedback or solicit requests for future products, etc. As for Tos Katun, heh! It must be magically enchanted for that thing to provide any protection at all! Interesting about the Weretigers being female. I didn't know that. I think that would be a great addition to the 5e lore though. -Theo
@@TheGallantGoblin Yeah they have not yet appeared on either forum yet. Nice that one of them recognized you! I am thinking for them D&D and Pathfinder is small potatoes next to the board games and Heroclix they make, hence less investment of the marketing/HR people. Indeed likely it is magic armor... glamored to appear more revealing perhaps. :D Some lycanthropes were exclusively male or female. Werefoxes or Vixen, who pretty much disappeared after 2E save for a 3E Dragon entry for Ravenloft, could only infect female elves, half-elves and humans, for example, and mated with attractive humans they charmed to only bear elf girls as offspring. And Sea Lions - the lycanthropes, not the seals - were male only, infecting sailors at sea.
So, let's compare werewolves and weretigers. A wolf is a medium creature. The polymorph ability of a werewolf states, "The werewolf can use its action to polymorph into a wolf-humanoid hybrid or into a wolf, or back into its true form, which is humanoid. Its statistics, other than its *AC*, are the same in each form." (Emphasis mine) So, it seems clear that werewolves in all forms are medium. Now let's look at weretigers. Tigers are large creatures in 5e. A weretiger's polymoprh ability says "The weretiger can use its action to polymorph into a tiger-humanoid hybrid or into a tiger, or back into its true form, which is humanoid. Its statistics, other than its *size*, are the same in each form." So the tiger changes SIZE in different forms. But which form is which size? In the description it says, "Weretigers grow to enormous size in animal and hybrid form." So this is why I contend that the hybrid form of a weretiger should actually be considered large in 5e. -Theo
Well, let's take a look in the same way. I see four different bears in D&D source materials (not counting owlbears). Cave, brown, and polar bears are considered large. Black bears are considered medium. The werebear, like the weretiger and werewolf, are labeled medium on their statblock. The polymorph ability says, "The werebear can use its action to polymorph into a Large bear-humanoid hybrid or into a Large bear, or back into its true form, which is humanoid. Its statistics, other than its size and AC, are the same in each form." So it's even more explicit about the hybrid form being large, probably because there are medium and large bear varieties in D&D, so they had to be specific. The description says, "When a werebear transforms, it grows to enormous size, lashing out with weapons or claws." So since it's using weapons, I assume they're talking about the hybrid form growing in size. So yeah, looks like werebears in their hybrid form would be considered large. It seems all these stat blocks are giving the size while the were-creature is still in its humanoid form. -Theo
No, they are only medium in their human form. The Monster Manual actually says they are the same size in hybrid form as their animal form - and bears and tigers are Large sized. Even says this in the lore text: "Weretigers grow to enormous size in animal and hybrid form"
@@TheGallantGoblin The problem I think is that the Monster Manual stat block is very vague about the size. It says this: "The weretiger can use its action to polymorph into a tiger-humanoid hybrid or into a tiger, or back into its true form, which is humanoid. Its statistics, other than its size, are the same in each form." - Now here is the problem it does not mention explicitly what size the animal form is - because for that you need to go to the Beasts section at the end of the book. Wizkids likely only checked their entry under the name which says: "Medium humanoid (human, shapechanger), neutral" - which is only true about their human form. Btw, are they that evil in Pathfinder? Interesting... they used to be Chaotic or True Neutral in D&D mostly.
The good news is that the huge D&D minis are a pretty recent thing so you actually have a lot more options for Pathfinder-sized giant minis! I believe Pathfinder is sticking with the current size for 2.0. The old D&D miniatures from sets before Icons of the Realms also used large-sized giants, so you can pick up singles of any of those that strike your fancy as well! -Grady
The old 3E-4E D&D Giant minis were Large sized too, if you want those. I like them both, and have both types, but I like the 5E return to the 2E ways. After all, in 3E, an Ogre is just a head shorter then a Hill Giant, despite the huge difference in power levels.
I recently took some time to compare some older "large" giants to the current "huge" giants. Aside from the base size, some of them look completely fine next to their huge counterparts. Glad to know I can mix and match them on the table to some extent. And yeah, if anything is going to be "Huge" it should be the giants! -Theo
Well, you probably wouldn't want to end up with 5 bushes if you got a case. Rarity doesn't always equate to value. Sometimes minis in a set are rare simply because there's no reason to get too many of them. In any case, all set dressing pieces are classified as extra rare and in this case one of them happens to be a bush, haha. -Grady
Haha fair enough. The set dressing is gone in the latest set, which we were sad about but it's possible that those were not that popular for this exact reason. On the other hand the set dressing usually matches an adventure path and Legendary Adventures is kind of a catch all for Pathfinder 2e, so they may have been excluded for that reason. It's also usually a bit more exciting than a bush. We've also heard they're probably getting rid of invisibles because people didn't like getting an unpainted version of an existing sculpt as an ultra rare either. -Grady
I really like this format, informative and quick, worth the time
Thanks so much! We try to value your time! -Theo

Achei que a câmera ficou muito distante nesse vídeo. Não focou as miniaturas como em outros vídeos.
Yeah, the camera was further away in that video from last year. We get closer these days! -Theo
There is only one Wererat in Kingmaker...…...yeah right and the two in the cave in part 1 are just glitches in my game
We haven't played Kingmaker ourselves, so we do the best we can in our research. We appreciate corrections and additional information. -Theo
Pathfinder giants are truer in size to real D&D than D&D figures. See Monster Manual by Gary Gygax
Weretigers are medium creatures in D&D 5e
-Theo
The Gallant Goblin a fair analysis. Then the werebear should also be large right?
It says this: "The weretiger can use its action to polymorph
into a tiger-humanoid hybrid or into a tiger, or back into its true form, which is humanoid.
I prefer the giant types from pathfinder the D&D ones are too large in my opinion. thx
-Theo
@@TheGallantGoblin I trade away all the oversized figs for more reasonable sized ones.
Understandable. The huge ones especially are hard to store. I just love how they look on the table. -Theo

A bush is ultra rare??!! LOL
-Grady
@@TheGallantGoblin Thats the thing I would be pretty sad for my ultra rare to end up a bush LOL
-Grady
