    To get some numbers, I grabbed a bunch of job ads for PLC technicians in my country (Austria). Taking the ones that mentioned a brand name, here is what I found:
    75% Siemens
    20% B&R
    20% Beckhoff
    (with overlaps, of course)

    Siemens has around 50% of the world market's in PLC (German)
    Schneider has around 20% of the world market's in PLC (French)
    Those are the only 2 brands with ALL the certifications.
    Everyone else split the remaining 30%. In North America Allen Bradley and Rockwell are popular.

    Schneider Electric must be in this list, since it purchased Modicon, which created the first PLC, the 084 model, in 1968.

    Another small PLC manufacturer I know is GCAN. A manufacturer from China and I work in their factory. However, they generally make scalable PLCs, not a fixed number of interfaces. They use OpenPCS by default, but CoDeSys can be used as I managed to flash the firmware. Unlike OpenPCS, CoDeSys requires authorization fees🙃, but it is very powerful. The only downside is that they are targeting the Russian market, and the official website and technical manuals are a bit hard to find.

    I have worked with AB for years. My first PLC was the PLC5 and actually an old PLC2 using the 6200 software. I have developed many small SLC-500 systems. I always enjoyed the RS Logix line of software. The only issue for small systems is the cost. If a small system is needed it is hard to justify the cost of the development software and even the small hardware. I have found that the Automation Direct Productivity 2000 line is a great answer to a small system that is very cost effective. The development software is FREE (can't match the price) and the hardware is very affordable. Now for realiability, I know that the big dog like AB ABB and Siemens are rock solid and very reliable. But the AutomationDirect Productivity line does provide a very cost effective answer to many applications.

      @@HermanWillems , I have not worked with AB systems lately. I am sure some of what you want is available, but I cannot answer for sure. Another small, but very reliable, IMO, PLC manufacturer is Eckelmann. They are from Germany, and a bit on the pricy/rare side oustide of the country (I'm in France, so it's OK), but they are extremely reliable. They are programmed with CoDeSys, which unlike siemens & co. is free, yet very powerful. The only downside is the documentation is sometimes a bit simple, and since they are not as widespread as others, finding help is a bit more tricky.

    The development environment that is shown the Siemens chapter is not Step7 but the newer TIA portal.

    • @realpars
      @realpars  5 років тому +1

      Both are correct. The total software environment shown is TIA Portal, which includes STEP7 as an embedded software development application for PLC logic. TIA Portal also has an embedded version of WinCC and NetPro as well. If you search the web for STEP7 v14 or v15, you will be linked to TIA Portal for that version. Siemens decided not to drop the STEP7 name entirely, since the latest PLC's are still in the S7 series, and the STEP7 name has universal recognition. But yes, it is TIA Portal that is shown in the video, with the STEP7 application open for PLC programming.

      Can Studio 5000, do interfaces and classes in structured text like Codesys V3.5 then?

    • @nickedwards4251
      @nickedwards4251 Рік тому

      @@HermanWillems Yes it can. I have used both and prefer to work with studio 5000 applications much more. It is simpler to use and seems to run much smoother in my opinion. The HMI software for Rockwell (factory talk) kind of sucks though. The company I work for uses a mix of Ignition and Wonderware (which are great) and factory talk for customers.

      If you want to learn plc's as someone who used to train plc programming I would recommend getting a Siemens Logo they are very powerful for there size and the programming software is reasonably priced with free upgrades. I always use them for smaller projects. Some programming software costs thousands and the interface leads cost hundreds where as you just use a cat 5 lead for the logo.
