    We're going to have to start calling him Father Goldmine Pine. Such consistently good teaching.

    "I know a few things about indulgences"...
    Goes on to give the best, scholarly explanation ever on the topic lol
    I still lean to Orthodoxy on it, but... very good.

    I'm quite leaning towards Catholocism as a protestant; I really see depth in the eucharist, the pope, and even a lot of Mary and her typology;
    Perhaps I lack understanding, but for me so far; indulgence really are a difficult point.
    I don't see it yet, it seems like way out there when I listen to this and some other videos I've watched on the topic.
    Is there any advice some of you guys have concerning this topic?
    And would you be so kind as of to pray for me?

      Protestant here as well. But definitely with rc and orthodox views, so that no longer can I identify as a Protestant. I still struggle with some of the Marian dogmas but can't help but see the deep intelectual concepts within church tradition. God bless you and me and our journey brother.

      I hear you, even as a lifelong Catholic I struggle with some doctrines such as indulgences hence why i am watching this video. To me, what is critical is the Eucharist! If what the Church teaches about the Eucharist is true, and I believe it to be so to depths of my soul, then some of the rest I just have to take on faith and trust in the God Who has done so much for all of us. I'll pray for both of you and ask you do the same for me as we seek to know, love, and serve God! :)

    Indulgences are so complicated? 😬 I'll need to listen to this several times to understand it.

    I struggle to understand how indulgences aren't basically simonry, but instead of buying with money, one buys by good works of piety? I get that Christ forgiveness to us might still entail a temporal punishment just like David's son had to die after David sinned and was forgiven. However, if we can reduce the temporal punishment by good works and arbitary conditions of prayer etc., aren't we trying to pay for our sins, even if it is just the temporal punishment aspect about it and not the eternal aspect? If one really is only motivated to escape the punishment of purgatory, how can he act out of love? Especially for anxious people it does create an environement where God's love truly has to be earned and isn't avaialable as a gift, which demonishes the motivation to do good deeds and to pray simply out of love. It's also quite weird and unjust in my sight to believe one can get a plenary (complete) indulgence for observing divine mercy Sunday once, while living a pious life throughout the whole year, not knowing about this opportunity and thus missing it, would be a less effective sum of partial indulgences.

    Thank you for this clip. Could you elucidate the nature of perfect contrition in the absence of access to confession?

    • @kennethtan2605
      @kennethtan2605 4 роки тому +2

      Hi, just sharing..plse continue to reseach esp.CCC. No one has absolute certainty if our contrition is perfect(mortal sin is remitted) or imperfect (any other reason for sorrow WITHOUT also for love of God). At Confession, our imperfect contrition, by the grace of the Sacrament, is converted to perfect contrition. So if confession is presently not available (though when available every reasonable effort ...personally, what is reasonable for restoration of peace of mind and fervour of amendment?....to Confess at earliest possible time. Meditation on the Passion...recommend 15 prayers of st Bridget reading slowly prayers no.2,4 ,12,14...available on internet....to purify our motives from fear of hell(imperfect) to love of God(perfect). Temptations still can assail us even after an Act of Perfect Contrition! Be aware. Do not put God to the test. Run away from occasions of sin. Why are there more religious saints than layman saints(personally, imo, in general,women start at a higher level and end at a high level.....IN GENERAL but for the grace of God....). Plse I urge you to note, as catholics, our principle focus in life should NOT BE "how am I to get to heaven and bring as many souls there with me.?" BUT RATHER "HOW MUCH OF HEAVEN DO I WANT TO ATTAIN, BY WHAT IS AVAILABLE TO ME, AND TO SHARE THESE MEANS WITH AS MANY PEOPLE AS I CAN." As laypersons, imo, after reading manifold books, the sacraments, divine office, scriptures esp the Psalms, rosary, chaplet of mercy, indulgences, fasting, almsgiving, works of mercy, corporal spiritual. If you hv St Faustina's Diary, look up No.605, one of the best explanations that in Heaven there are different degrees of happiness. In the mystery of salvation, St Augustine's, quote (paraphrasing here..available on internet!!..what a double edged sword...the internet!), -God made us without us but He will not save us without us.(of course, always by His Grace). Because of human weakness, we must grow, over time, the shortness of life, to come to the realisation, by the sacraments and prayer etc etc, how much we are Loved. Imagine, hanging on the wounds in hands and feel, struggling to take each agonising breath sharing dislocated limbs for 3 hours with your enemies gloating yr death with mockery. Does it beg the question, "Does Jesus loves me?", when we are in the midst of a trial... God bless.🤗🤗🤗

    Is justice something WE demand or is it really from God? Is justice the same as revenge? Divine Mercy Sunday you can receive a plenary indulgence that removes all temporal punishment due to forgiven sin ("Temporal punishment" is the "making up" for sin to which we are obliged after we are forgiven).

    Protestant here, asking a sincere question. Please go easy on me. Why can't this plenary indulgence (which is offered at the end of one's life and can cause complete healing instantaneously) be offered to everybody right after first communion? Wouldn't they then be able to live the rest of their lives as completely sanctified servants of the Lord?

    Why doesn't the roman catholic church advise us when our loved one is released from purgatory so we can celebrate their going to heaven? This would be a great comfort us.

    Whenever I listen to a Catholic explain justification and being saved, they make is so much more confusing than what the Bible teaches.. with the invention of purgatory, indulgences, the rosary… none are needed to enter the Kingdom.

    I think you just helped me understand what indulgences are. I'm not a catholic, so when I first researched them yesterday I was horrified. But this makes more sense.
    My only problem with it is the idea that the merits of the saints can be applied to the penitant, and not those of Christ alone. Are not the mercies of Christ infinite?

    • @user-yr7jp1tn6y
      @user-yr7jp1tn6y 4 роки тому

      Christ's merit if infinite, but the merits of the saints are sort of added to that infinity (although even without those merits of the saints, there would still be the infinite merits of Christ).

    • @whitevortex8323
      @whitevortex8323 3 роки тому +1

      I would say we have to remember all merits are through christ. It is Christ through saints merits just like you would say if you a protestant or whatever, that you are saved through by Christ through faith. You wouldnt say oh we dont need faith, it is just Jesus's merit of dying on the cross, you would say no it is Christ merit through faith in christ. Hope it helps.

      @Skelley-Priest false. Macabees doesn't outline indulgences.
      1)- it's not scripture, the jews don't treat it as such, and even catholic academics know its nor regarded on par with the Tanak.
      2)- even if it was, Judah Macabee, in that passage, isn't sharing Revelation from God. He's not a prophet. He never reported a dream or vision or heard from God. He doesnt relay what a prophet or prior Revelation or tradition revealed about prayer and the afterlife.
      Even if we assume he's actually authoritatively giving advice on praying for the dead, he never outlines the result or what to expect or that God will covenantally honor such in any sense one can build a doctrine off of.
      What the passage actually implies:
      Judah Macabee apparently believed it was worthwhile to pray for people who are:
      1)- under God's covenant
      But
      2)- died in a state of dubious grace based on their behavior (died doing something evil).
      In his case the were Jewish patriots who fought to restore Israel, but when their comrades prepared them for burial, idols were found on their bodies (like a good luck charm).
      Idolatry for jews was akin to the level of sin catholics would call a mortal sin. So their state in death can't be guaranteed by a priest who has no divine word like a prophet.
      So what did he do? He acted appropriately for a priest/general/Chaplain. He advised that his men pray for them in the hopes God would have mercy on them.
      It's always up to God for how he grants mercy, and God might the importance of intercession for us by Moses and Jesus.
      Judah reflected this principle rightly in light of the unknown.
      But in no sense did he say if they prayed enough they WOULD be saved.
