We need to bring back when the pastor of a parish would catechize the Catechumens. I try to go weekly, but it’s hard whenever your parish only offers it for 45 minutes on the middle of a SATURDAY. I hope that priests will start realizing the importance of the sacraments again and devoting their lives to offering them more prevalent so that people don’t have to be strained of grace.

Father Gregory, going to Confession is a very serious matter. We should have sorrow for our sins with the thought of trying never to offend God again. You make confession sound like we are making a laundry list and being sorry doesn’t really matter. Confession is a Sacrament and the graces we receive has all to do with the love, trust , and respect we have for our Lord and His Holy Catholic Church. I am a convert since July 3rd 1959, love the Catholic Church and follow the Traditional teachings of our Faith. It seems to me, we have fallen away from our Catholic Teachings and have lost our way to guide others to the truth. May our Lord keep you faithful to His Teachings and grant you the wisdom to lead all those in your path to His Salvation.
One thing I notice which greatly aids my confessions is a consistent daily examination, which helps me to pinpoint concrete events giving the ability to name the sins/opportunities of grace met throughout the day, instead of heading into confession wondering what exactly I did that week lol Fr. Gregory, could you do a video on the nightly examen? This was a great video on confession!
My 1962 missal has fantastic morning and evening prayer and what you say is 100% how it’s been for me. I simply cannot keep committing the same sins when I am to face them at the end of every day, and resolving to not do them the next day in the morning. Edit: well not simply, I still do sin terribly but I at least have to work on them when I do this prayer routine.
Best video on confession I have ever seen. As a semi recent convert to Catholicism from being Protestants, I found this incredibly insightful and the advice super practical. Thank you, Fr
@@beagle5 do you know how to stop whining like a little baby on catholic sites. You worry about whether you will get to heaven because it is doubtful. You spread lies and try to deceive people.
I can't say enough about the grace I have received from a brief nightly examination of conscience and regular confession (every two weeks). It's truly amazing. I do the regular longer examination once before I confess. Each night, I simply run through the day and see if I can apply the phrase "Jesus and I did ____." If Jesus wasn't present, that's something to take note of. For example, I hit the snooze button and didn't have time to read the Daily Readings. Jesus and I ate breakfast." "I neglected to say Grace before. Jesus and I stayed patient with my friend. I ate a lot of junk food instead of lunch."
I was lukewarm before and I didn't have any problems with going confession. I am now a different person. However, I have a hard time with Real Confession. This video tremendously help! God blesses you, father.
I kept forgetting the Act of Contrition until I asked the Holy Spirit to help me never to forget it again and I have never have. Praise be God the Son and the Holy Spirit.
I went to confession this morning! Father gave me 13 minutes of his time for counseling, encouragement and prayer. Wonderful experience. My penance was to read Psalm 51.
Hi Father Gregory, I have a video request! Could you talk about how to combat the sin of acedia and how acedia differs from sloth? Thank you for all of these great videos!
Thanks Fr Pine. As someone with a strong vocation, need for confession and a spiritual director. Plus a very messed up mind. I need it, grace be upon you. Pax
Excellent explanations and suggestions for aiding us in “making a good confession.” I go once/month and tie it into the First Saturday devotion which our Blessed Mother strongly encourages for our advancement in holiness as well as for the reparation of sins against her Immaculate Heart.
Thank you so much for this video, very useful. Could you please make some videos regarding the 7 deadly sins and explanation about them? This would make it clear for many of us, sometimes we may be commiting mortal sins without knowing they are mortal sins.
Thank you Father Pine! I always confess too little or not enough and you made it perfectly clear what I need to do for a beautiful confession. Praying for you thank you!
Very good sermon Dear Fr. Gregory. Iam viewing you from far from India You are a great asset to the Catholic Church I remember. Our Holy Father immediately after taking His p osition
Thank you for clearing up contrition. There was an instance where I went to Confession and told the priest that I didn't feel like I was sorry or remorseful and asked if I should proceed with the Confession. He was puzzled because my presence in the confessional alone disproved that and he told me the devil was putting those thoughts in my head. I wanted to receive the Eucharist which I knew I couldn't do that without Confession. So I guess it was "imperfect contrition" as you say. He didn't tell me to leave (nor did I expect him to) and I confessed my sins and was absolved. To hear you say that the Sacrament itself brings about contrition is very helpful to hear. Thank you Father.
Ya know, when you UA-cam how to go to confession you usually get kids in middle school talking about arguing with their brothers or cheating on a test. This is what I've been looking for. Thank you.
A helpful video for me may be: how to know when to speak up? When is it appropriate to speak on our faith when we live in a family that doesn’t like hearing anything God-related, let alone being the only Catholic. I don’t want to push my faith on them- they know what I believe, so I hesitate to bring up religion/faith in fear they think I’m judging or forcing it on them. Best I can put into words, the feeling goes deeper.
Thanks, Father for stating that confession is to deal with our sins - not counseling, not spiritual direction, etc. I always keep mine short and to the point, and frankly, I wish others would as well.
There was a very long line at Confession (not my parish but had to go) & a lady came & told us due to the fact there were so many of us to please give the Reader’s Digest version and we’d all get heard. It took me few minutes & then it hit me - the brief version of our sins. And just like that everyone got in. 💕👍
Today, I went to my second real confession since more than 10 years! Just go, you priests are amazing. Thank you very much. Just go, dont overthink it. It is very releaving. Thank you God and God bless you Priests🕊✝️❤
Whats beautiful with technology is that it educates and at the same time enlightens you. This in turn makes me feel loved by God. Thank you so much Padre and all the other Priests that also educates and enlightens us all in a colloquial and easy to understand way. Why? Because I can then discuss this with another confused catholic which in my opinion brings them closer to God. Education and enlightenment. Thank you Padre🙋🏻♀
This is my reminder to do better with my Examen schedule. I’ve been slacking because someone else tends to go over long in their talking. Attrition, Contrition, Ten Commandments, Seven deadly sins, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit sound like solid practices to me.

Very helpful! I also heard that we should be seeing some improvement in not committing the same sin. We should confess and work to avoid the sins, hence the act of contrition.
Thank you father. Excellent advice. For all you P-troll’s making negative comments about confession of course you don’t see confession to a priest in your Bible. Or put another way, Bible verses I NEVER SAW when I was a protestant. You are like Saul with scales over your eyes. And that’s what happens when you are constantly proof texting using your unbiblical sola scriptura delusion. Here’s just one verse and this is not an exhaustive Bible study, from Matt 9:1-8 when Jesus heals the Paralytic, verse 8, “When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to MEN.” Please notice the authority to forgive sins was given to “MEN.” That’s plural. Plural means more than one MAN! Now contrast it against John 20:23 “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” So does confession make a little more sense? It should!
A beautiful exposition of the power of the sacrament of Confession. If we want to grow in love of God and neighbor, we have to be honest with ourselves and God in terms of how we wound that love. For those who take this sacrament seriously, the growth in loving intimacy with God and neighbor is unending. I had to laugh...I say the same act of contrition and also sometimes forget that last sentence. Cheers and keep up the great work!
Wonderful guide to confession; thanks! I would love to see a video on keeping the Sabbath. What counts as servile labor and what doesn’t? Can you grocery shop or go to the movies? What about house chores?
Here's a good general rule: if the work or shopping can be done on a different day than Sunday, then don't do it. Some chores can be done on Saturday, while others such as doing dishes or sweeping the kitchen have to be done after a meal, so Sunday would be appropriate for them. It's really a mindset issue; Saturday is a domestic work day, Sunday is not.
All Pat said is true. And I would add: Sunday is the Lord's day. You have all week to yourself and your family and to do the "worldly work". So, that one day of the week should be given all to God. You focus on Him, you pray, you read the Bible, read religious books or watch something on youtube, just do something that will help you grow spiritually and bring you closer to God. It’s not a day for entertainment and wordly indulgence so we shouldn't go to the movies, to parties, to the mall etc. We should go to church and then go home and spend the day fully in God. For Him, not for us. Of course if you forget buying something on saturday but you really need it on sunday, nothing will happen if you pop to the store to get it. We dont need to get paranoid. But it's better to organize your week in such a fashion so that you can devote sunday fully to God.
Thank you so much, Father! I didn't know the nuances of confession even though I have been going to confession for many years. I realized today that I can't remember what sins I might have committed since my last confession, or even when my last confession took place. I know it was less than six weeks ago, but that's it. Something you said about re-establishing a relationship with God made me understand that the question I should always ask myself is "how is my relationship with God diminishing?" "What am I doing to separate myself from God?" "Am I walking away?"
Thank you Father. This is a very hood video. I especially like the the suggestion to go over the gifts and virtues of the Holy Spirit. I have to go face to face because I read lips. Pride keeps me away more than anything else. And as I age it is getting harder and harder to understand what the priest is saying. I fear the day I can’t understand anything and I will no longer be able to receive absolution. Please pray for me and others like me, who cannot understand what is being said to them.
I found this video to be very helpful. Actually, during Lent I went to confession every week. And the priest did tell me to quit thinking about the past and to begin thinking about the resurrection of our Lord. I had been reading Saint Faustina's diary and I just wanted to be as diligent as she was. It's a long story but I believe the Lord has led me to a period of my life where I am not sinning anymore. I think I can say that honestly. Your examples of what really isn't a sin was really helpful. God Bless
Dear Father, could you do a video breaking down the Commandments, and the seven deadly sins. I have found that I don’t fully understand each one. Example, the first commandment, commands faith, hope, love and worship of God. But forbids, idolatry, superstition, spiritism, tempting God, sacrilege, and attendance at false worship. I took this off the internet. It would be helpful to understand each commandment, to do a full examination of conscience. Thank you. 🙏🙏🙏
I realize the term is used now, but ‘in the old days’ we never said ‘Sacrament of Confession’, but only ‘Sacrament of Penance’. One ‘went to Confession’. (I remember when ‘dread the loss of Heaven and pains of Hell’ was changed to ‘just punishments’. Nothing seriously objectionable, of course, but the start of not wanting people to be faced with unpleasant realities that are part of the Faith.
This is a really fantastic video! It helped remove some of the fear and confusion surrounding sacrament for me, while also giving some valuable and lovingly delivered insight. Thanks, Fr. Pine :)
Thank you so much. I have needed years ago. Even though I have asked, it still wasn't explained in detail. Thank you. God bless you and your holy garden angels 😇
Thank you Father. I started going back to confession on the Immaculate Conception and went again the first Friday. The Monsignor priest recommended I start going monthly and that is what I intend to do. Before the recent confessions, it was a couple years since my last confession. The recent confessions have helped me but I also seem to feel the devil attacking me harder,or maybe it’s just my flesh. The fight is a blessing though.thank you for the detailed instructions on what a confession should include and how to describe sins and what you don’t need to say. 🙏🙏🙏
thank you Father Gregory for this vid, it helps me a lot to know. I used to do a weekly confession just started this year bec the church i now go has given 2 priests but just decided this week that i will go for once a month instead. Its like a GOD sent answer to my concern. I will still go back to my once a week, what a blessing for me. Thank u so much.
1) Obviously, if you've committed a mortal sin, you need to go to confession as soon as possible. Don't wait for a month or anything like that. Because who knows when the Lord will call us. 2) Also, while any genuinely forgotten mortal sin is forgiven, you need to confess it at the next visit. 3) As the CCC stipulates, absolution of sins that require restitution means that there must be an intention to do so (WHEN POSSIBLE) for the absolution to be valid.
Thanks Fr Pine and Pints with Aquinas for this excellent video (as always). When I came back to Church after 8 years being apart from it, I remember having some confessions where I got corrected by the priests who told me exactly what Fr Pine is telling us there. These guidances help me a lot. God bless you !
For me as soon as I have committed a mortal sin, I’ll jot it down and go for confession with my list of sins since my last confession before I take holy communion. I usually don’t wait for a month because I do not want to skip holy communion.
What you bring to the sacrament: 1.Contrition/penitence (a virtue associated with justice). It’s something we owe. It’s a moderate sorrow/ hatred for past sins. Desire to make amends and cease committing them. Desire to convert further Imperfect contrition: you hate the consequences of sins. More concerned of the effects of the consequences. The things you lose out on Perfect contrition: you hate the sins because you realize the way it has wounded others (chaste fear: fear of wounding someone you love(God)) Note: You don’t need to have perfect contrition to approach confession. Perfect contrition is the fruit of charity. When you go to confession your contrition is perfected in the process (Attrition-> contrition) you don’t have to Holy and completely and perfectly contrite to go to confession->Rely on the sacrament to bring that it in you But if you feel no contrition: if you have sin and no desire to overcome sin it is invalid. *We must have a desire to heal, overcome, grow 2. Confession: you can over do it or under do it. Recommend: shoot for once a month (it’s a recurring thing to a human scale of remembrance and habit) -You are responsible to confess ALL grave sins that you have committed since your last confession If you forget and later remember the confession is still valid because you didn’t hide that sin on purpose. You can also confess venial sins- if they’re not addressed they can grow into mortal sins When preparing for confession it’s good to make a examination of conscience ( go through commandments, 7 deadly sins, virtues, and vices) invoke the Holy Spirit *Sacrament of confession is a source of grace NOT a reset button Entering confession: you do the sign of the cross. You say: Forgive me Father for I have sinned it has been ___ since my last confession. Slot in your state of life (I’m single, married, etc) Confess all conscious sins with kind and number. Don’t globalize yourself/accuse yourself of all sins. It doesn’t have to be long/ psychologically detailed. You don’t have to confess temptations. You don’t have to give a narrative of your sins or try to pin your sins on others. Take responsibility. Be honest and authentic. Try not to make the same confession all the time from despair-> Reevaluate. Helpful to have a regular priest you confess to Confession is NOT a pastoral counsel, visit to a psychologist, spiritual direction 3.Satisfaction: priest gives some kind of counsel. Then penance. Penance: is a temporal punishment so that you atone for the sin to complete the process of your healing and growth. If you have a penance that doesn’t have an end date or you can’t fulfill, you can ask in the sacrament of confession for another penance. Memorize the act of contrition. Humble yourself and submit to ritual forms (the ritual the church has discerned over the history of years) Like the following: My God I am heartily sorry for having offended thee and I detest all my sins because of thy just punishment but most of all because they have offended Thee, my God, Who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen Then the priest gives the absolution (if the priest doesn’t use the proper words you can ask him to give the proper absolution) **REMEMBER: The sacrament of confession is instituted for your healing and growing**
I've memorized the Act of Contrition. It helps a lot if people memorize it. Otherwise, they worry about what they should say, adding to their hesitancy to confess
Thank you, Father. I haven't been to confession in about 20 years, but I'm going tomorrow morning. This video has been super helpful in preparing. Boom. :)
Hope you made it in and it went great!
Wonderful, God bless you!
Thank u father .One needs a list of the sins that offend God..
So number and kind... not the number of the commandment that was broken. Just name the sin and how many times you broke it ?

Thank you, Father! Very well presented, I especially enjoyed the “Chick-Fil-A” part! Brilliant sense of humour. Bless you 🙏
Thank you so much Father!!! I am a Confirmation teacher and I am going over the Sacrament of Confession this week and you gave a beautiful description on Confession that I am going to share with the students. God's Perfect Timing!!
I like having the Act of Contrition written out so I can pray it as praying out loud can get me nervous.
Protestant (well, neither Protestant nor Catholic at the moment) and finding this explanation helpful
Some ideas for future videos:
1) An in-depth video on Angelology and Demonology. Who is Lucifer? What are the Nine Choirs? Who are Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael?
2) Comparing and Contrasting Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy.
3) How best to dialogue with a) Muslims, b) Buddhists, c) Hindus, d) Protestants e) Jews f) Atheists
4) An in-depth video on Catholic Eschatology
5) An in-depth video on Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory. What they are, and what they are not.
Yes! Nightly examen. I struggle with that.
I’m a cradle Catholic, but I find this really hard. I’ll keep on trying!!
Thank. you. Fr. Gregory. its.. very. Helpful. I. went. to,. Confessions,.. Before. Easter
God Bless Father Pine 🙏
Best video on confession I have ever seen. As a semi recent convert to Catholicism from being Protestants, I found this incredibly insightful and the advice super practical. Thank you, Fr
Very Sad. Have you abandoned the word of God?? and are ashamed of Jesus and His word? Do people really not know how to Pray??
Thank you Father, this is powerful.
You took away the "fear" out of confession🙏
May GOD continue to bless you. Thank you Fr Gregory Pine.
Pax
@John Andy don't be a creep
@John Andy A sin
So Many people I know ignore going . Hopefully this clarifies &edifies why they need to💥 Thank You Father Pine
Excellent explanations and suggestions for aiding us in “making a good confession.” I go once/month and tie it into the First Saturday devotion which our Blessed Mother strongly encourages for our advancement in holiness as well as for the reparation of sins against her Immaculate Heart.
Father for the ones who does not know it will be good if you said the proper words of absolution . Ty 🙏🏻
Agreed, I'm not sure that I would know if it was said incorrectly.
I love to ask for help from Our Blessed Mother and Holy Saint Joseph and my Guardian Angel in my Act of Contrition to Our Lord.
Thank you so much for this video, very useful. Could you please make some videos regarding the 7 deadly sins and explanation about them? This would make it clear for many of us, sometimes we may be commiting mortal sins without knowing they are mortal sins.
God bless whoever asked this question, I have been wondering about this lately. Praise the Lord I found this video!
Thank you for this overview of confession. Almost like a 27 minute confession boot camp.
Thank you so much Father ~ I’m prepping for becoming Catholic ❣️❣️❣️
Welcome 🤗
Wow same
Thank you Father! This video was so helpful. I will pray for you in thanks for the good Dominican teaching which makes sense. God Bless.
Thank you Father Pine
Thanks, Father for stating that confession is to deal with our sins - not counseling, not spiritual direction, etc. I always keep mine short and to the point, and frankly, I wish others would as well.
There was a very long line at Confession (not my parish but had to go) & a lady came & told us due to the fact there were so many of us to please give the Reader’s Digest version and we’d all get heard. It took me few minutes & then it hit me - the brief version of our sins. And just like that everyone got in. 💕👍
Every month, with first Fridays and first Saturdays, we can consecrated to our Lord & our Lady 🎉
Today, I went to my second real confession since more than 10 years! Just go, you priests are amazing. Thank you very much. Just go, dont overthink it. It is very releaving. Thank you God and God bless you Priests🕊✝️❤
Thank You , Father for making this less embarrassing, difficult. 🌹
Tks a lot Father! Keep it up!
Praise n Glorify n thank God! For everything !
Blessings n more holier life with others too!
You're an asset to the Dominican friars. Wonderful explanation.

This is awesome! Glad you highlighted the “desire to heal”… this is very helpful!
Excellent video, thank you Father. I became a Catholic decades ago but I feel I am still learning certain lessons.
Very helpful! I also heard that we should be seeing some improvement in not committing the same sin. We should confess and work to avoid the sins, hence the act of contrition.
Fr. Gregory, ti ringazio di tutto questo che hai insegnato!! Lo mettero' in pratica allora. Thank you!!!
It should!
This is most helpful. Thank you, Father, God bless you!
Thank You Fr Gregory Pine. Thanks Pints with Aquinas for bringing us this wonderful video too. 🙏❤️🙏🕯️🕯️🕯️
I always forget 'The Act of Contrition' when I go to confession. But I know it and say it every day in prayer 🙏
God bless you Father Pine
Thank you, it is nice to see a Dominican priest again, went to a Dominican School and Parish in Boksburg South Africa.
Wow! 6 months as a Catholic
Thankful for my Priests patience….
Thankful for the explanation ❤️🩹🙏🏾
Thank you, Father. Good, clear presentation.
❤️ the clicking tongue to emphasize the flow 🌬 of the confession.
Thank you Father for the clarity. In confession.Thank you for the yes you said to Jesus .now a priest.
Thank you. 🙏🙏🙏
This was exactly what I needed.
Thank you.
Thank you so much. God bless🙏❤️🙏
Thank you. God Bless ypu.
Thanks Fr. Gregory. This podcast is very helpful in understanding and appreciating the Sacrament of confession and its purpose.
Thank you so much Father ! 🙏🙏
Thank you for making this video, very helpful saving many souls
Thank you Father this helps alot😊
thank you Father Gregory for this vid, it helps me a lot to know.
That was a terrific tutorial for us Father. Thank very much and God Bless!
Thank you, Fr. Pine. This is very helpful.
Thanak you so much, Father. This is something i always struggle with and i always feel that it's not right so thank you for this very detailed guide.
For me as soon as I have committed a mortal sin, I’ll jot it down and go for confession with my list of sins since my last confession before I take holy communion. I usually don’t wait for a month because I do not want to skip holy communion.
What you bring to the sacrament:
1.Contrition/penitence (a virtue associated with justice). It’s something we owe. It’s a moderate sorrow/ hatred for past sins. Desire to make amends and cease committing them. Desire to convert further
Imperfect contrition: you hate the consequences of sins. More concerned of the effects of the consequences. The things you lose out on
Perfect contrition: you hate the sins because you realize the way it has wounded others (chaste fear: fear of wounding someone you love(God))
Note: You don’t need to have perfect contrition to approach confession. Perfect contrition is the fruit of charity. When you go to confession your contrition is perfected in the process (Attrition-> contrition) you don’t have to Holy and completely and perfectly contrite to go to confession->Rely on the sacrament to bring that it in you
But if you feel no contrition: if you have sin and no desire to overcome sin it is invalid.
*We must have a desire to heal, overcome, grow
2. Confession: you can over do it or under do it. Recommend: shoot for once a month (it’s a recurring thing to a human scale of remembrance and habit)
-You are responsible to confess ALL grave sins that you have committed since your last confession
If you forget and later remember the confession is still valid because you didn’t hide that sin on purpose.
You can also confess venial sins- if they’re not addressed they can grow into mortal sins
When preparing for confession it’s good to make a examination of conscience ( go through commandments, 7 deadly sins, virtues, and vices) invoke the Holy Spirit
*Sacrament of confession is a source of grace NOT a reset button
Entering confession: you do the sign of the cross.
Helpful to have a regular priest you confess to
Confession is NOT a pastoral counsel, visit to a psychologist, spiritual direction
3.Satisfaction: priest gives some kind of counsel. Then penance. Penance: is a temporal punishment so that you atone for the sin to complete the process of your healing and growth.
If you have a penance that doesn’t have an end date or you can’t fulfill, you can ask in the sacrament of confession for another penance.
Memorize the act of contrition. Humble yourself and submit to ritual forms (the ritual the church has discerned over the history of years) Like the following:
My God I am heartily sorry for having offended thee and I detest all my sins because of thy just punishment but most of all because they have offended Thee,
my God, Who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen
Then the priest gives the absolution (if the priest doesn’t use the proper words you can ask him to give the proper absolution)
**REMEMBER: The sacrament of confession is instituted for your healing and growing**
Very helpful video, Father! Thank you!
Father Gregory Thank You for this instruction.
Thank you father!
Thank you 👨 Father
Wow !
Thanks so much Father !
That brings so much light to me !
Thanks very much for this Father
I've memorized the Act of Contrition. It helps a lot if people memorize it. Otherwise, they worry about what they should say, adding to their hesitancy to confess
Thank you Father Pine!
Thank you for this wonderful counsel.
Thank you Father
