If you take it as a given that extinct dinosaurs were all weird and wonderful, then you gotta at least consider that Stegosaurus was one of the weirdest and most wonderful.
Thanks to Julio Lacerda and Studio 252mya for the stegosaurus illustrations. You can find more of Julio's work here: 252mya.com/gal...

RIP Allosaurus. Death by Stego-nutshot is not how anyone wants to go.
Don' t mess with the stegosaurids..!
@Otto Von Bismarck your correct its called the slashing axe bite
Otto Von Bismarck
That sounds pretty macho to me. Would you be ballsy enough to slam your face into someone hard enough to rip em up with your teeth?
@Otto Von Bismarck whaaat?
And that Allosaurus's name? Thag Simmons.
That the Far Side named tail spikes, and it stuck and is used in legit academic papers, is my favorite paleontology fact.
Agreed I love it the best real life is stranger than fiction after all!
RIP Thag Simmons.
I loved that cartoon when I first saw it, then when I heard that fact as well I loved it even more. Main reason I clicked on this video if I'm honest, just to hear him tell the story :-)
Dang Thag.
@@Neenerella333 At least we know the name of one caveman
0:35
"We know these are not accurate restorations but they are adorable."
😂
Oh, gee, and here I thought they were. How could I have known they were cutesy drawings, if not for the helpful note?
Thagomizer sounds like a wonderful name for a band.
Cypher Caliban it also sounds like the name you would give to a stick or sword!
Cypher Caliban don't get any ideas nephew.
Tristan The Man Stfu u stupid thagomizer.
"Thagomizer" is a term coined by the cartoonist Gary Larson in his cartoon "Far Side." It seems that paleontologists liked the joke and adopted the term.
Cypher Caliban ...also kinda sounds like the name for an exercise device you'd see advertised in a late-night cable infomercial.
The Stegosaurus could swing its tail so hard that it penetrated bone?! That's hardcore.
I see what you did there 😂😅
@@cristiannoel7394 I'm not even sure if I was making a pun at the time, but knowing me, probably. XD
Why did male Stegosaurus have dorsal plates?
So that female Stegosaurus would look at them and think "that scute"
I like you
LOL ^_^
+
Ba dum psst
I love that this isn't just a pun, it's an accurate depiction of what was said in the video
Evidence: Stegosaurus had a small brain
Paleontologists: no no no can't be... a second one must be in its BUTT
Love this host! Some say he talks a little fast or that the videos should be longer but I think they're perfect! Loving the series!
He looks and acts like Backyard Scientist all grown up.
I'd like to see a video on convergent evolution.
JazzyHands YEEESSSSS
JazzyHands that's a pretty cool idea
using the example of dolphins and ichthyosaurs, please!
Vampyricon and echolocation!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
RIP, Thag.
It's amusing that you bailed on actually showing the Larson comic; I don't blame you, despite it being within fair-use if low res enough.
Best quotes: "iiiiiin the butt" and "-I looked it up"
Ok I lost it when he said “butt-brain” 🤣🤣🤣
Prehistoric insects, the more absurd, the better.

I would like to know:
1. The evolution of RNA->DNA
2. The origin of the digestive pathways used to break down cellulose aka wood.
3. were any dinosaurs sexually dimorphic?
tastyscavenger +
I'd love to know that too, but I think the answer to 3 is yes.
3. Yes. Look at a pheasant.
1. No one knows.
2. It's not so much a matter of anatomy as having the right intestinal flora.
3. Yes.
3. chickens
I am loving this channel.
M Mustafa +
thank you so much!
Please do an episode on the pterosaurs! The largest organisms to take flight!
Stay tuned! We have stuff coming on that in the next few weeks!
More information here than most documentaries that are hours long. I hate drawn out documentaries that just pull it out for ad time. This, this is concise and direct. Perfect.
I don’t know if this would count as an episode but it would be very interesting to see the history of canines and how they have evolved.
Thanks for the quality time with my dinosaur-obsessed 5-year-old!
I love this new channel. Totally voted for it in the last PBS Digital Studios survey. Could you do an episode on the very earliest mammals? I'm talking Jurassic and Cretaceous, I don't mean earlier synapsids (although they're very cool too). I'd love to learn more about how they're related to each other and modern mammals. Best of luck with Eons, I'm hoping it takes off because I want to see so much more of it!
yay!
Man, this is giving me such nostalgia for Walking With Dinosaurs and all those dino videos I used to watch as a kid. Love this channel!
This channel and these videos would be a million times better if they were longer.
I am under the impression that it takes a lot of effort to produce a video with this many graphics every week, and this likely contributes to the shorter length.
Sam Romano I know it's a completly different field of study, but if you want some long, in depth videos about complex scientific topics, I would heavily recommend PBS Space-Time
Also some hardcore nerdcred if you can actually follow what their host says
Or Infinite Series. And, yeah, actually, I adore Space-Time. I'd say I follow about.. 80% or so. Less than that for infinite Series, because I'm way more Physics geek than Math geek.
Sam Romano I agree
Awesome video! I love how passionate this host is. As for topics, could you do some more about marine life? Oh maybe one about Anomalocaris or other Cambrian organisms.
what about the history of all the super continents not just Pangea
Cody Carney that's a great idea!
Cody Carney: cool idea, except there aren't a lot of them Rodinia is so far the first more or less reliably reconstructed super continent that included all land masses.
Seems like you got your wish. :)
They have it ua-cam.com/video/KfYn9KVya-Q/v-deo.html
Can you guys do one on the Gorgonopsid?
“He too is a herbivore but very dangerous. It is the spikes on his tail that make him so lethal.” - Walking With Dinosaurs Episode 2
Thag may be gone, but his name lives on.
Rest in peace, Thag Simmons
Considering how iconic the stegosaur is, if the plates and Thagomizer were purely ornamental, they worked!
Always was my favourite dinosaur. Thanks for the video.
To contrast some of the comments that said the video is too short, I personally prefer the more concise summary. With how advertising currently works on youtube, many videos are bloated to twice their justified size or more, rambling on and on just to stretch the time a little further. With so many of those monstrosities around, it's very pleasant to listen to someone who can get to the point.
Seriously, this video isn't even 5 minutes long, but it has more information than many 20 minute videos. Rather than saying we just want longer videos, maybe we should specify which parts of the video we want to see explored in more depth?
I wish these videos were longer! These subjects are awesome!
😃 The stegosaurus has been my fave dino for 50+ years, ever since my neighbor had one as a pet... 😉🙄 Naaw, ever since I read a wonderful little book entitled, "The Shy Stegosaurus of Cricket Creek," by Evelyn Sibley Lampman. Two children playing in a small canyon near their ranch home, discover a living stegosaurus, self-named "George," because he liked how it sounded against his teeth. Yes, of course, he talked and spoke English! 😄
I make fun, but it's a lovely children's book. Almost caused me to become a paleontologist. But I met a mesmerizing professor of archaeology, end of my junior year of high school, and forgot dinosaurs for a while. 😁
Can you do a video on mass extinctions?
I second this, I'd especially like to know more about the extinctions before the dinosaurs.
we will add it to the list! lots to come, lots to cover.
Loving this channel. X
From all 3 hosts on this channel you are my favourite Blake
Thanks!
I knew about the thagomizers...I saw a video about it several years ago...and I'm a Far Side fan, I laughed so hard I couldn't catch my breath! Lol!
Loving this channel so far-- keep it up!
Best UA-cam channel ever!❤️ thank you for another great video
Good video but the guy talked a little fast. I'd love a video about the evolution of bony fishes, or prehistoric sharks!
Tucker Caldwell that guy is the writer of sci show and a bunch of these channels.
Tucker Caldwell fishes
LachyM8!!!!!! He's ripped
In the settings you can control the speed and slow it down. I normally use it to speed up videos with slow talkers.
Thanks! Now it's watchable!
Love this series! Could you do a video with an overview of the entire geologic time scale and all the different eras? Just a quick summary of each one in order.
You do you Stegosaurus! You'll always be my favorites!
Just found this channel. Watched every single episode.. MAKE MORE!!!
Best channel on youtube besides good mythical morning
Stegosaurus was my favorite dinosaur toy I had while I was growing up.
I love this series of videos, please don't stop
3:12 ayyyyy it's Tetrapod Zoology! Awesome science blog with an equally awesome accompanying podcast.
Can u guys do videos on pinniped evolution, or the evolution of other groups or traits like sabre teeth?
Placoderms. I love those guys and I've heard that some are proposing that they weren't just extinct cousins to modern body fish but that one line become the modern fish.
As a kid who loved dinosaurs, I figured they developed the scutes to keep larger predators from biting into their spinal cord which is what a lot of predators go for, a paralyzing bite along the back, and stegosaur had a long humped exposed back, and kinda shaped like a dino taco. Plates are there to prevent them from being an easy meal.
These videos are wonderful. Thank you!
I think an episode on neoteny and ontogeny would be really cool! Totally loving this series btw!
evolution of beaks would be awesome!
A video about prehistoric snakes would be awesome
dragonguyy Yes! like Titanoboa.
Once again Gary Larson influences our lives in the best way possible, with humor. Poor poor Thag, your death was not in vain!
This guy should do all the narration.
60 SQUARE centimeters? Of brain capacity?
Are you sure it's not CUBIC centimeters?
this is the coolest channel ever. thanks for making this information so accessible.
2:10 The very first nut shot recorded in history, was so bad the dude died later. Paleontology is awesome.
It'd be nice if you could make a video helping contextualize what creatures lived in certain periodes; how creatures are classified; and what characteristics different time periods have
I would love to see a video on oreodonts. They were so abundant in North America and yet so few people have heard about them!
My favourite video in existence.
I enjoy this series & I ❤ the angiosperm episode. Archaefructus ... Lionaensus? Anyway - I think symbiosis is the most awesome part of life on Earth (angiosperms + insects =
Do we know for certain the scutes weren't covered with skin or cartilage? Maybe they had soft tissue connecting them and the individual scutes were part of two long frills or ridges. (Which would probably still not explain why they are there, but I like the display-theory for that one)
A picture of a Stegosaurus related species was shown, namely the Kentrosaurus. I noticed that scutes, i.e. dorsal ossified plates were replaced by spikes in Kentrosaurus. Scutes and spikes may represent 2 possible evolutionary defenses against predators. Spikes might be more efficient than plates to protect the animal against dorsal attacks because they may injure badly the predator.
Even if it wasnt their primary use the scutes were likely highly useful for defense. Predators tend to attack the back and neck, but blunt spear shaped bones would be tricky to get between
A video about horseshoe crabs and their contemporaries (ie., other "living fossils") would be cool!
THAGOMIZER!! Gary Larson is forevermore immortalized in the annals of paleontology!
Allosaurus:.....
Stegosaurs: YOUR TALKING MAD SH%T FOR SOMEONE IN THAGOMIZER RANGE!!
Stegosaurus was one of my favorites!
They should name that big cavity in the sacrum the "Larson sinus", representing that empty space we all felt in 1995 when the last syndicated Far Side cartoon was published.
I am a
S T E G O S A U R U S
It didn't even look like a stegosaurus but nvm
I get the reference!
It works! My time machine works!
Are you trying to steal my identity?
Lol
0:33 They are hella adorable 😍
Bob Bakker would approve the name thagomizer. Haha. I love paleontology!
There's so much you guys could cover. Hoo boy. Let's see: I'd love to see something on the Permian extinction, the spinosaurs, the origins of dinosaurs, ammonites (since you did one on trilobites), the Cambrian explosion, the Ice Age, ankylosaurs, Tiktaalik, paleontological history, the Triassic period, in general.... okay, I need to stop myself. I'm sorry....
"Stop yourself."- Masaeanela, 2016. Those stegosaurs looked like something she would draw.
Stegosaurs: Who need a Big brain? When you got Plates like mine...
Great video! Keep the great content coming!
There was one interesting theory I heard as a kid about the scutes. The idea was that the scutes did have blood vessels in them, but it wasn't for regulating heat: it was for pumping blood into them to flush them a bright scary color as a defense or threat display.
We had a friend in high school before this came out (it came out a year later). We called him "Thag" and the cartoon came out. His name is really Blake Simmons. I am not kidding.
You asked for topics .
I would love a 'Time' line for feathers and their types in the varios genus, if there is consensus enough for that to be possible.
👍PBS Eons.
The ten year old in me wishes you had published this several decades ago.
I like the speaker's speed of speech. It keeps the video moving along at a nice pace.
Its spinal cord was probably taking care of a lot of non conscious activity like breathing, heart rate, and digestion. Kind of like a chicken. You can cut a chickens head off and as long as you preserve the neck tube it will live indefinitely.
I would like a video about all the stem-mammals.
They are very rarely talked about
My son is dying for a video about the placoderms!
Restorations were adorable
I cried when, at the age of four, I first saw the stegosaurus die in "The Rite of Spring" sequence of Disney's "Fantasia".
Can you do a video on the Ediacaran Biota?
Stegosaurs were always my favorite dino
thanks for that episode! Stegosorus are my favourite dinosaurs :D
I'd like to see a video on the evolution of Cetaceans (Whales and Dolphins). I think it's a good example of how the theory of Evolution is predictive, in that we continue to find remains of intermediate species.
They ARE adorable!
This is really interesting
I would love to see Eons episode about all the known mass extinction
I love the music with this video, it's so... Stegosaurus
I had that far side comic book and totally remember the specific one with the thagomizer.
Woo! My favorite dinosaur got its own Eons episode!
+PBS Eons Can you guys do Ceratopsid Combat? Like the picture of two Chasmosaurs locking horns you had in the first video.
One argument for defensiveness I can make is it potentuially protects them against things that are coming from above.
Big dinos with big jaws might think they'll hurt themselves if they try to learn down and bite.
Things that may leap into the air and/or swoop down from above might think twice as they could impale themselves or become seriously injured.
Things that may try to stomp on them will also think twice.
It's a good day when science allows you to say "butt brain" in a professional sense.
A video on the Permian extinction would be aight. Also thanks for doing a video on a dinosaur! Dinosaurs are so awesome.
I have add-block. But just for this series I decided to pause it and click on every add youtube throws at me... best thing I can do to thank you!
